About USTA North Carolina

USTA North Carolina, a not-for-profit organization, is the state affiliate of the United States Tennis Association in North Carolina. It was founded in 1949 and incorporated in 1974. Since that time it has focused on its singular mis-sion: To promote and develop the growth of tennis in North Carolina.

USTA North Carolina administers a variety of programs statewide for players of all ages and ability levels. As a not-for-profit organization, the association invests 100 percent of its proceeds to promote and develop the growth of tennis in North Carolina.

There are currently more than 33,000 USTA members resid-ing in North Carolina: this includes over 15,800 adults, over 12,000 families and over 7,500 juniors.

A professional staff housed in Greensboro carries out USTA North Carolina’s daily operations, but policy is formed and some of the organization’s work is executed via a Board and committee structure of volunteers. This year more than 120 volunteers make up 27 committees, which include admin-istrative duties, community development, tournaments and competition, league divisions and recognition.

5 2019 NORTH CAROLINA TENNIS YEARBOOKWWW.NCTENNIS.COM

WelcomeWelcome to our latest yearbook, a review of all the events and people involved in tennis around North Carolina. North Carolina has a long history of tennis excellence, and 2018 was no exception! We continue to lead the way with exciting events, innovative programs, and outreach.

I hope you were able to make it out to Asheville again in February for the Fed Cup tie between the USA and Australia. It was the first time in more than a decade that a host city was awarded the event two years in a row. This is a great honor, and recognizes the welcoming spirit and hard work that the Asheville community did to pull off yet another amazing event! NC Tennis was there, too, leading five days’ worth of activities, reaching more than 1,000 school children and introducing them to the game we all love. The tie came down to an exciting decisive fifth rubber, and in the end, the Australian team edged the USA to move on to the semifinals.

We all know that tennis is the best sport there is, but research studies have started to support our claim. In a 25-year study supported by the Danish Heart Foundation, it was discovered that tennis players live 9.7 years longer, on average, than people who are sedentary. Key findings note that the social and mental aspects of our game are what make tennis a better bet for longevity than more solitary activities such as running. I know that my life has been enhanced by the friendships I’ve made on court and I’m sure yours has, too!

Besides adding years to your life, tennis is a sport with a low barrier to entry. Think about it – all you need is a ball, a racquet, and a partner (or a wall!). Anyone, of any age or ability, can play. In North Carolina, we’ve made an investment in new players with our Try Tennis program. It’s a low-cost program funded by USTA NC that is offered by local CTAs and other organizations in cities across the state. Now in its fourth year, the program has helped more than 5500 adults and juniors in over 60 cities catch the tennis bug. Additionally, we’ve introduced Try Play and Try Match to help tennis newbies learn some of the nuances of the game and become more comfortable with playing. As a result, we have seen an increase in USTA leagues’ unique participation during 2018 & 2019. To learn more about new sessions starting throughout the year, go to www.trytennis.net and introduce a friend to tennis!

Each year, we recognize people and events in North Carolina with our state awards. Because it is difficult to know of all the good things going on in every community in our state, we rely on individuals like you to tell their stories. It is exciting to note that North Carolina is home to three USTA national award winners. Please join me in congratulating:

• The Adaptive Tennis Association of North Carolina for receiving the USTA Adaptive Tennis Award,

• The Charlotte Community Tennis Association which was recognized as the Community Tennis Association of the Year, and

• Mr. Lenny Simpson, who was honored with the USTA Foundations Founders’ Service Award for his outreach with the One Love Tennis Lenny Simpson Tennis and Education Fund in Wilmington.

All of these winners started as nominees in North Carolina! Go to www.southerntennis.info/awards today to submit a nomination.

As I near the end of my two-year term as President of the Board, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve. Each year, volunteers across North Carolina dedicate thousands of hours to promoting and supporting tennis in communities large and small. If you are already a volunteer, I thank you for your service. If you have not yet had the opportunity to volunteer, I encourage you to consider doing so. It is a decision you will never regret. To learn more about applying to join the NC Tennis Board of Directors or volunteer for one of more than two dozen committees, go to www.nctennis.com.

Bea Burnette of Tarboro, NC began playing tennis at the age of 17 while at-tending East Carolina Teacher’s College (now East Carolina University). From the first time she picked up a racket, she was captivated by the sport. Burnette continued to play as she moved from Greenville to Chicago to New York City.

During the early 1970’s, Burnette played in five events on the Virginia Slims Cir-cuit, placing her in a pivotal time for

women’s tennis. While Burnette jokingly confesses she lost to everyone on the Virginia Slims Circuit, including Billie Jean King, her amateur career has been nothing short of extraordi-nary.

At this writing, Burnette has won 16 USTA National Champion-ships in her age group. Claiming titles on multiple surfaces in both singles and doubles, Burnette also has 29 second place finishes and 21 third place finishes, making her the most deco-rated North Carolinian in USTA Championship play.

As a member of Team USA, Burnette has won three Interna-tional Tennis Federation (ITF) World Championships. Burnette has been selected to compete as a member of the USA ITF Su-per Seniors Team every year since 2010. Burnette has partici-pated and won numerous awards in tournaments in Australia, Austria, Canada, Croatia, Great Britain, Turkey, and all across the United States. She is an ardent ambassador for tennis and what tennis can do for each of us.

Henry Hostetler was born in Raeford, NC where he began his tennis career as a distinguished junior player. After high school, Hostetler attended East Caroli-na University where he earned a spot on the varsity tennis team and was select-ed team captain in 1977.

After graduating, Hostetler served as the Director of Tennis for the City of Greenville. In addition to his work with the city, Hostetler served as the USTA

Adult Local League Coordinator in Eastern NC for over 20 years. Hostetler has been a member of countless USTA North Carolina and USTA Southern committees. Hostetler served as President of the North Carolina Tennis Association (NCTA)

from 2004 to 2006 and President of the North Carolina Tennis Foundation in 2007 and 2008.

During his time as NCTA President, Hostetler and fellow NC Tennis Hall of Fame Member, Paula Hale, spearheaded the ef-forts to relocate the USTA North Carolina offices. Together, Hostetler and Hale launched a successful fundraising cam-paign collecting over $1.8 million dollars. These funds were used to purchase USTA North Carolina’s current building at 2709 Henry Street in Greensboro and to relocate the NC Ten-nis Hall of Fame.

Throughout his illustrious tennis career, Hostetler has received several USTA North Carolina awards. Some of his accolades in-clude Carlton Harris Tennis Professional of the Year, the Mary Milam Achievement Award, and the John and Dottie Peddy-cord President’s Award.

Today, Hostetler resides in Winterville, NC, where he works as the Owner and Manager of Baywood Racquet Club.

Matt McDonald, born and raised in Charlotte, NC, picked up his first ten-nis racket at age nine. Throughout his junior career, McDonald was consistent-ly ranked top 15 in the state. During his senior year at East Mecklenburg High School, McDonald finished with a 35-1 record losing his only match in the NCH-SAA state finals.

McDonald enrolled at NC State Univer-sity and kick started his hall of fame ca-

reer in Raleigh. As a member of the Wolfpack, McDonald won three doubles titles, playing at No. 3 in 1977, No. 2 in 1979, and No. 1 in 1980. In singles, McDonald won two ACC titles, playing at No. 4 in 1978 and No. 3 in 1979. During his senior season in 1980, McDonald went undefeated playing the No. 2 singles spot. McDonald reached the NCAA quarterfinals alongside fellow NC Tennis Hall of Fame member, Andy Andrews, and earned NCAA All-American honors. McDonald was named as one of the top 50 tennis players in the ACC’s first 50 years.

Following a successful collegiate career, McDonald went on to play professionally. McDonald reached a career high ranking of No. 273 in the world. McDonald reached the finals of five satellite tournaments and finished with a career best win over No. 48 ranked Christophe Rober-Vasselin.

2019 Hall of Fame Class

Bea Burnette, Henry Hostetler, and Matt McDonald to be inducted into the NC Tennis Hall of Fame

The North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame now includes 99 members with the addition of Bea Burnette, Henry Hostetler, and Matt McDonald for the class of 2019. The inaugural class was inducted in 1975. The North Carolina Tennis Foundation selects two or three members each year to add to the Hall of Fame during Tennis Weekend. This class will be inducted on Saturday January 26, 2019 at the Pine-hurst Resort and Country Club. For more information, visit www.nctennisfoundation.com.

The mission of the North Carolina Tennis Foundation is to “support organizations and programs that enhance the lives of people through tennis and education.” One of the founda-tion’s main programs, the National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) Network, truly takes this mission to heart. Through the North Carolina NJTL Network, more than 4,000 students par-ticipate in tennis and educational programs each year. NJTL goes beyond tennis and focuses on impacting youth with edu-cational and character development. Students are introduced to a wide variety of educational topics that are designed to be fun and engaging. These NJTL programs are helping shape and grow children for a bright future.

The North Carolina Tennis Foundation also provides grants to junior tennis players and programs across the state. These grants help players attend college tennis camps, cover travel

expenses, and help children play in their first tennis tourna-ment. This year, the NCTF announced the creation of two new program grants. The High School Team Grant was designed to help high school tennis teams buy equipment, supplies, and fund facility projects. The Emily H. Preyer Family College Scholarship was created to help North Carolina high school seniors cover the cost of college expenses.

To donate to the North Carolina Tennis Foundation and to learn more about the grants and opportunities available, please visit www.nctennisfoundation.com.

Thank you for your continued passion for growing tennis. Your support allows more children in North Carolina to be intro-duced and impacted by this wonderful sport!

Winston-Salem Open 2018

Daniil Medvedev came to Winston-Salem ranked No. 57 and left winning the 2018 WSO title, rising to a career-high No. 36 and making history as the first Russian to win in the Camel City. The 22-year-old defeated Steve Johnson 6-4, 6-4 on Stadium Court to claim the singles title. It was Medvedev’s second ATP World Tour title of the year and it concluded an impressive week in which he never dropped a set.

Medvedev began with a win over Mirza Basic, following up with successive wins over Alex DeMinuar, Guido Andreozzi, Ryan Harrison and Taro Daniel to rise to the final. He credits his good serves as the skill that helped him win. Opponent Johnson was a crowd favorite to win, having defeated top players Tommy Paul, Jaume Munar, Kyle Edmund and Pablo Carreno Busta on his rise to the finals. Defending 2017 cham-pion Roberto Bautista Agut did not participate this year.

The no. 2 seeded team of Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Te-cau defeated Wild Card team Jamie Cerretani and Leander Paes 6-3, 6-4 to take the WSO doubles title. Dutch Rojer and Romanian Horia repeated their doubles championship, becoming the first team in the tournament’s 8-year history to win back to back years. The No. 13 ranked duo also won the 2017 U.S. Open.

In route to the final, the team defeated Marco Cecchinator/Andreas Seppi, Marcus Daniell/Wesley Koolhof, and Joe Salisbury/Neal Skupski.

TEAM NC AND 2018 SOUTHERN JUNIOR CUP

Southern Cup

It is a misconception that tennis is always an individual sport. Yes, when playing singles, the player has to have many individual characteristics to compete; among those are self-motivation and self-reliance. They are always on the court solo with no one to lean on, ask advice, cheer them on, or to remember the score. It is the player and the opponent competing for the victory. It is “game, set, match” and then maybe a next round. Then there is TEAM NORTH CAROLINA!

Team North Carolina is the umbrella that fosters the “team” con-cept as it relates to our competitive junior tournament players. North Carolina has a long tradition of developing high performing junior players that have gone on to play at elite NCAA programs, and a few have become professional players. The standards are high and our players strive to be the best each year. One of the proving grounds is at the annual Southern Junior Cup events: 12U Southern Junior Cup and 14U-18U Southern Junior Cup.

The USTA North Carolina Tennis Association values and encour-ages team representation at all levels. The Southern Junior Cup is arguably our most competitive junior team event as it brings our top-ranked players together as a team of one, to compete together as the best team in our state. This event highlights teamwork and sportsmanship and is an opportunity for our players and their families to experience the team atmosphere as they may collegiately. The Southern Junior Cup is the pinnacle of Team NC competition, and 2017 proved to be another very competitive performance by some of the top junior players in North Carolina.

Southern Junior Cup is the time in the year where our players are selected based on a number of factors and criteria created and agreed upon by our Junior Competition Committee. Nine boys and nine girls (3 in each age division) are selected to repre-sent North Carolina against nine other states in Southern section (STA). Southern Junior Cup is our junior version of Davis Cup and Fed Cup, in that players put their individual standings aside for the weekend and work together with team-first attitude in team format play that includes singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. The energy, the support, the cheering, the off-court camaraderie highlights another dimension to being on the court. The battle matters to others. With high-performance coaching from NCTA coaches, parent and family support, and positive teammates at this 3-day event, the environment is team tennis at its best!

Southern Cup

2018 Southern Senior CupThe 2018 Southern Cup was played May 31-June 3, 2019, at the Huntsville Tennis Center in Huntsville, Alabama with all nine Southern states participating. This championship continues to be USTA Southern’s crown jewel of adult competition in the South. The event always draws more than 300 players in team com-petition. The events for men and women are 35, 45, 55, 65, and 75 age categories with a team match format of two singles and one doubles. The players in the field include former collegiate All-Americans, NCAA champions and professional players.

Tani Deaton and Huntsville Tennis Center have continued to make Senior Cup a stellar event for our players. The tournament also would not have been possible without the efforts from the tournament staff who volunteered their time to make this tour-nament a success. Those volunteers were Cookie Guarini, Nancy Vineyard, Bonnie & Mike Vandegrift, and Jeff Gray, along with our Referee Marty Engle and Southern staffer Marita Edrosa.

We also want to take this time to thank all of our captains for ef-forts in recruiting, coordinating and serving as the leader for your state teams. USTA Southern would not be able to host this tour-nament without you. Kudos to our two new captains -- Barbara Ernest from AL and Ged Swing from LA -- for a great job in their first year of captaining.

On the women’s side, Team North Carolina was represented by Frances Chandler, Anne Frautschi, Burnette Herrick, Bunnie Jack-son, Alice Keiger, Kristen Kepler, Brandy Kmiec, Wendy McCo-lskey, Jennifer Moore, Janet Moseley, Aimee Norris, Jane Prey-er, Katherine Shelburne, Elizabeth Speicher, Faye Thomas, Lynn Vosloo and Susanne Zuniga and captained by Aimee Norris.

TEAM NC 10 AND UNDER (10U) EARLY DEVELOPMENT CAMPS (EDC):

January, 2017, the USTA SOUTHERN section adopted the Youth Tennis Progression, which is designed to create an enhanced experience for children starting tennis and playing in junior tennis tournaments. The goal is to ensure that young players ages 7-10 years old are competing at appropriate levels as they progress through competitive stages based on age, participation and achievement. Our system will track the progress of junior players as they advance from Orange Level 2 to Orange Level 1 to Green Level 1 and then to the yellow-level junior/youth competition. (Levels are determined by the type of ball the player is using.) This system serves as a guide for coaches, parents and players to help ensure that kids 10 and under participate in events using the appropriate ball and court for their skill level.

In order to enhance camp accessibility to our 10U players in North Carolina, we have created USTA-sponsored instructional camps throughout the state. Our intention is to minimize travel to the appropriate camps, utilize local qualified coaches, and create a positive team atmosphere with each camp opportunity. Players will earn (3) participation stars at their current level of the Youth Progression.

Selections into the camp will be based on a combination of 10U standings and progression achievements as deemed appropriate by USTA North Carolina and respective TeamNC and Selection Committees.

Fed Cup 2019

Beautiful Asheville, North Carolina hosted the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas first round tie between the United States and Australia on February 9-10, 2019. Thousands of fans packed the sold-out U.S. Cellular Center to watch as Team USA begin vying for the championship against long-time rival Australia.

Representing the United States was Madison Keys (No. 17), Danielle Collins (No. 23), Sofia Kenin (36) and Nicole Melichar (doubles No. 13). Ashleigh Barty (No. 6), Daria Gavrilova (No. 46), Priscilla Hon (No. 142), Kimberley Birrell (No. 157) and Astra Sharma (No. 160) represented Australia.

The atmosphere was electric as posters, waving flags, costumed spectators and noisemakers could be seen scattered throughout the crowd. Fans from all across the country traveled to North Carolina to don the red, white and blue, making their presence felt. Billie Jean and Gladys Knight were in attendance with Billie Jean King being awarded the ITF award for significant contributions. The award was given on behalf of the ITF by Mary Pierce.

Day one began with Sofia Kenin and Ashleigh Barty taking the court for the first rubber. Barty took the match winning 6-1, 7-6. The second rubber featured Madison Keys, two-time Grand Slam semifinalist, and Kimberly Birrell. Keys took the match 6-2, 6-2.

On day two of the Fed Cup tie, Madison Keys was once again the first to represent the United States against Ashleigh Barty. Barty defeated Keys 6-4, 6-2 in the third rubber. The fourth rubber found Danielle Collins and Daria Gavrilova in a heated battle. The match required a third set, but Collins overcame Gavrilova 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 to send the clash into a decisive fifth rubber. Nicole Melichar joined Collins, Priscilla Hon joined Barty; Australia managed to take the match 6-4, 7.5.

Team Australia will continue its Fed Cup title defense when they travel to Brisbane, Australia to face Belarus.

During the week-long celebration of tennis in Asheville, USTA North Carolina partnered with local sponsors to provide a number of events. At the U.S. Cellular center and Asheville Racquet Club Downtown, USTA staff hosted two Youth Days powered by Net Generation, which included NJTL and local children from schools and the community, plus on-court demos. Additional events included USTA Player Development Camps, Kids’ Clinics, Camp Green 10U, Middle School and High School Net Generation Clinics. Big kids enjoyed the Wheelchair Clinic and Pride Day Brunch.

Fans who visited the booth received daily giveaways, including Fed Cup hand clappers, horns and noisemakers. Two lucky contest winners received an oversized tennis ball autographed by Danielle Collins, Sofia Kenin, Alison Riske and Nicole Melichar.

We would like to thank all the partners and volunteers who assisted throughout the Fed Cup tie. Our events would not have been possible without the help of our volunteers. A special thanks to the Asheville Tennis Association, Buncombe County Schools Sys-tem, Asheville City Schools, Ingles, and U.S. Cellular Center.
