Examination

Socrates once said, “The unexamined life isn’t worth

living.” I would suspect that the unexamined club

isn’t worth belonging to as well. When was the last

time we examined our club? Where are we headed?

What is our purpose? Luckily Socrates didn’t say

we needed the answers; we only needed to ask the

questions.

Over the next few months I will be assisting the club

and its members in asking the questions. How do we

balance the exceptional needs of the experienced

turner with the fundamental needs of the novice?

Does our club have a purpose other than meetings

once a month and a Christmas party once a year?

What else can we do?

In this month’s issue of “American Woodturner” we

are given short bois on the 2014 candidates for the

Board of the American Woodturner organization.

The candidate from North Carolina, Byron E.

Rosburgh, discussed helping take his local

Wilmington woodturners association from 35 members to over 110. He alludes to the fact that not only

giving direction to the club but also setting goals was a key to his success. Concrete ideas developed out of

the desires of the membership, and potential membership, led to their growth.

As a board, we are moving forward with some wonderful ideas but we need more input from OUR

membership in order to provide you with the solutions for your passions. We understand that the quality of

our demonstrators has a direct relationship with the number of members present at a monthly meeting.

(Except for last month when we had several members present for Orville Shook’s presentation. They must

have assumed we had another presenter. Just kidding Orville.)

I could spend the next three months learning about segmented turning but I know that others want to hear

about design techniques, business opportunities, nontraditional turning, pens, etc… We strive to provide

something for everyone. We can do design techniques with segmented turning. We can learn about pens

while discussing basic and advanced techniques at the same time.

I guess what I am saying is that I hope you will become vocal. Very vocal. We will work to provide you

with opportunities to voice your opinions. At next month’s meeting you will be asked to relay information

about presentations you wish to see, opportunities with which you wish to be associated and endeavors in

which you wish to partake. We hope to have a representative from one of our beneficiary charities to relay

the impact we can have on the lives of others.

As a precursor, please review the questions below and bring some answers with you at the meeting on

August 10th

.

Do you have any presenters you wish to see in the coming months?

Do you have any techniques you wish to learn through a club presentation?

What questions would you like answered about woodturning?

What is your favorite joke about woodturning/woodworking?

What are your favorite websites?

Please come next month as we explore shell ornaments and work on the questions Socrates asked us to

examine?

August Demonstrator – Kurt Hertzog By Beth Parham

I am excited for this month’s meeting. I, personally, will be able

to meet Kurt Hertzog, Vice President of American Association of

Woodturners (AAW).

The morning portion of his presentation is scheduled to be Sputnik

Shell Ornaments; afternoon presentation will be Beyond the Basic pen. I am

looking forward to seeing this master woodturner sharing his skill and taking copious notes for my

reference after the day is finished. The exact demonstrations may vary from this write-up; this is based on

the information I had at the time of publication of the newsletter.

A professional woodturner, Kurt enjoys the continuum of woodturning from making his own turning tools

to photographing his finished turnings. He keeps his turnings diverse in an effort to explore fully the craft

and the medium. As frequent demonstrator and instructor on all facets of woodturning, he particularly

enjoys teaching tool sharpening, work holding, and advanced pen making.

Kurt writes two regular feature columns for Woodturning Design Magazine and a series for Woodturning

Magazine. He is one of the five Council Members of the Pen Makers Guild, past Chairman of the

Rochester Woodworkers Society, and a member of the Board of Directors and currently Vice President of

the American Association of Woodturners.

His work has been featured in the American Association of Woodturners "Rounding The Corners" Exhibit

and published in Woodturning Design, Woodturning magazine, American Woodturner, Pen World, and

Stylus magazines. You can see the range of his work on www.kurthertzog.com, and on

www.penmakersguild.com.

Newsletter

I am always looking for information, materials and topics that you would like to see as part of the club’s

newsletter. Share ideas you’d like to see incorporated in OUR newsletter.

Library

The library is being inventoried and evaluated for worn materials, missing videos and/or DVDs, broken or

items that do not play properly. We have obtained additional materials from the Tuckers as well as from

other members that have donated to the club. These are being evaluated/separated/cataloged where they

may be additions to our library.

Membership

We have had a member join during the month (shopping in Klingspor and learned about the club and the

club discount benefit). Additionally there were some renewals that came in at the last meeting. I am

working on adding new nametags and membership information for our directory as well as updating

membership information to Klingspor for discounts.

Types of Membership and annual pricing. See me at meetings if you want to join or have questions

NCW turning station. Come out and play, make

some mulch, and try to beat Scotty’s heap.

Also Set Up* and Break Down volunteers NEEDED for the NCW

demonstration area – compensation TBA.

*Set up volunteers must have knowledge of how to set up NCW audio and visual

equipment.

The signup sheet will be at the next few meetings. Please see a board member for any questions.

North Carolina Woodturning Symposium

Biennial Regional Symposium

November 1st - 3rd, 2013 Greensboro, NC

Join us as we bring some of the best turners from around the world to Greensboro.

Compensation will be paid to members who volunteer to work the NCW symposium room. What would

you need to do? You will need to be the camera assistant and clean up after the demonstrator.

Volunteers will be compensated $25.00 for EACH rotation they complete.

There will be 7 simultaneous demonstrations at each of 9 rotations over the three days. Great way to see

a demonstrator is behind the camera or in our room. Nothing like a front row seat.
