Welcome from the President
Fans,
Welcome to the NCHSAA Softball State Championship. Competing for the state title is a
highlight in any high school athlete’s career. Every team remembers the preseason workouts
and the first weeks of practice thinking to themselves this will be our year to play for a state
title. Now, here we are watching the two best soccer teams compete for the right to be called
a champion…a state champion.
The amount of time and effort by the athletes, the coaches and volunteers has paid off to
punch a ticket to Raleigh or Greensboro today to finish strong and bring a state champion-
ship trophy home. For many of our seniors this is the last time to make an indelible mark
for their school’s sports legacy. Regardless of which team you are here today to cheer on to
the title, we must never forget these are student-athletes who play soccer for the love of the
game and the competition it provides.
Ever since the NCHSAA was established in 1913, our core mission has been to provide
opportunities for interscholastic competitions within the state of North Carolina. We offer
this opportunity understanding that success in the classroom is key to success in life. Those
students who play sports in high school learn valuable lessons about winning and losing,
working hard, setting goals, building leadership characteristics to name just a few. Each year,
at our annual meeting in May, we recognize those individuals and teams who excel in the
classroom and on the field of competition. We also recognize teams from all four classifica-
tions who over the course of one year are also recognized for displaying sportsmanship in all
of their athletic teams.
Prior to the first game of the series we will be recognizing an athlete from each team which
embodies sportsmanship and serves as ambassador for their team in the community.
Sportsmanship is more important than ever in the world of high school athletics, especially
when some of our professional athletes cannot display the same level of integrity as our high
school athletes. The honorees at today’s state championship exhibit sportsmanship not
only during competition, but also during practice when they help a fellow teammate
get up after being knocked down. These athletes are the role models we want all of our
younger athletes to follow and look up to.
Most of all, I want to thank you the FAN for supporting your favorite team today.
Regardless of the outcome, this is a special day for all of our athletes. Thank you for
supporting the NCHSAA and all 409 member schools which makes this association the
best in the country.
Sincerely,
Rodney Shotwell
President

June 2-3, 2017 Welcome to the annual edition of the North Carolina High School Athletic
Association state softball championships! During this weekend, four different championships will be decided at two
outstanding venues, including Dail Softball Stadium in Raleigh and UNCG Softball
Stadium in Greensboro. We believe that this will be a tremendous experience for the
student-athletes, the coaches and administrators, and the fans of the schools who have
won their way through the playoffs to reach this point. We are grateful to all of those who have a hand in making these championships
possible, including all of the specific host city sponsors in each of the locations. This
year FloSoftball.com, part of FloSports, is on hand to provide special video coverage for
this event.
There are also a lot of volunteers and NCHSAA staff members who have worked
tirelessly toward making this event the best it can be. We always strive to do anything
we can to make this weekend a great life-long memory for each of these student-ath-
letes participating and their communities. If you are a high school softball fan in our state, then you are in the
right place if you’re in one of these stadiums to enjoy championship soft-
ball and a tradition that is over three-decades in the making. We appreciate your support of high school athletics and hope you
enjoy the best high school softball our state has to offer -- the NCHSAA
State Championships!Sincerely,
Que TuckerCommissioner
Welcome from the Commissioner

2016 1A Softball Championship Recaps
GAME 1 - North Stanly slides past Princeton 3-2
Raleigh, N.C. – In a game that was tight the whole way, North Stanly got a pair of doubles from Sam Hogan, one in the first inning and another in the third, to push past Princeton 3-2. Hogan was 2 for 3 on the day and scored two of the Comets three runs. She also pitched seven innings only allowing five hits and two runs on her way to the win that puts North Stanly in a position to close out the best of three series in Game 2 Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
Hogan was matched almost pitch for pitch by Princeton’s Hailey Wood who also pitched a complete game, allowing five hits, but three runs on the day despite 10 strikeouts and no walks.
Hogan started a two-out rally in the top of the first for the Comets with a double, coming around to score as Heidi Smith ripped a single to plate the game’s first run. Smith came around on an RBI single by Alexa Sells and the Com-ets took a 2-0 lead right from the start.
The Comets tacked on another run in the third as Hogan slashed a triple with one-out in the third and Smith plat-ed her on an RBI-groundout to take the Comet lead to 3-0.
Princeton answered in the bottom of the fourth when Casey Mitchell led off the inning with a double, Karlyn Woodard then reached on a throwing error and both runners came around to score on Briana Myers two-RBI double, cutting the North Stanly lead to 3-2.The Bulldogs were unable to tie the game up despite threatening in the bottom of the seventh.
GAME 2 - Princeton rebounds in game two with an 8-1 win over North Stanly to force game 3
RALEIGH, N.C. – With their backs against the wall in game two, the Princeton Bulldogs came out swinging against North Stanly pounding out 11 hits and 8 runs on their way to an 8-1 victory over North Stanly forcing a decisive game three in the 1A Softball State Championship series.
The Bulldogs broke the ice in the third inning as Kelsey Peedin drew a one-out walk and Megan Bryant followed that up with a single. Brianna Myers rapped a double to the wall bringing both runners home and giving the Bull-dogs a 2-0 that they would not relinquish.
Princeton followed the two runs in the third with three more in the fourth as Emily Ricks belted a home run, chasing North Stanly starting pitcher Sam Hogan from the game with one out in the fourth. With a 3-0 lead and a new pitcher in the game, Princeton went right back to work as Casey Mitchel singled before coming around to score on an RBI-single by Peedin. Peedin also scored when Bryant knocked her in with a single to lift the Bull-dog advantage to 5-0.
Hailey Wood ripped a double with one out in the fifth and Beth Braswell followed it up with a double of her own to plate Wood and give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead. Princeton

GAME 3 - Princeton claws back to beat North Stanly 3-2, clinch 1A crown
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Princeton Bulldogs entered game two with their backs against the wall, just a few hours after that game two win, they found themselves in a peril-ous situation once again. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning of the decisive game three of the 1A Softball Championship series, the Bulldogs scratched across a run in the bottom of the fifth as Megan Bryant raced home on the two-out RBI-single by Hailey Wood cutting the North Stanly lead to 2-1.
Princeton sent Wood back out to the pitching circle for her sixth inning of work in the game, what would be her tenth on the day, and she managed to work around a pair of one-out singles in the top of the sixth by the Comets holding the Bulldogs within a run.
Comet starting pitcher Sam Hogan had been almost untouchable through the first five innings, only allowing four hits, all singles, and just two runs as she went back to the circle for the bottom of the sixth. But after Emily Ricks worked a lead-off walk in the inning, Bulldogs sophomore left fielder, Casey Mitchell, stepped into the batter’s box. She worked the count full from Hogan and then belted a two-run home run to lift the Bulldogs to the lead for the first time on the day at 3-2. Mitchell would later be named the series M.V.P.
Mitchell’s shot sent senior hurler Wood back out to the circle with a chance to close out North Stanly in the top of the seventh. Wood worked a perfect 1-2-3 seventh to shut the door on the Comets and secure Princeton’s first fast-pitch softball State Championship in school history with a 3-2 win.

GAME 1 - South Granville holds off West Lincoln 5-4
Greensboro, N.C. – South Granville found themselves down 2-0 to West Lincoln in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the defending 2A Softball State Champions would not go down quietly. With one out in the fifth, the Vikings managed to put a runner on off of a Rebel error before the next two batters sin-gled. Then Viking clean-up hitter Megan White stepped in and delivered a grand slam home run to give the Vikings a 4-2 lead. They wouldn’t look back on their way to taking a 5-4 victory in game one of the best-of-three series.
West Lincoln responded in the top of the seventh inning as Jes-sica Adams delivered a one-out two-run homer to tie the game at four. She had three RBI’s on the night.
South Granville answered as Adams roped a one-out double bringing up Viking junior second baseman, Abbi Colclough. Colclough served up a game-winning RBI single, plating Adams from second.
Miranda Baker pitched well for the Lady Vikings, tossing 7 innings and allowing 4 runs on 8 hits while striking out a pair on the night.
GAME 2 - West Lincoln blanks South Granville 4-0 to force decisive game 3
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Cassidy Wise spun a complete game three-hitter shutting out South Granville to force a decisive game three in the 2A Softball State Championship Series with a 4-0 win. Wise was nearly flawless in the circle, allowing only three hits while striking out four batters on the afternoon. The Vikings never had a runner advance past second base.
West Lincoln jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning as Carson Warlick touched home on an RBI-single by Meredith Ferguson, one of three Rebel hits in the opening frame. The Rebels tacked on three more in the fifth when Bailey Reep drew a leadoff walk coming around to
score on an RBI double by Kinsley Gilmore. Raeven McCrod-den reached on a fielder’s choice with two outs in the inning making it to second on a wild pitch. Then Warlick singled and McCrodden across the plate and came around to score herself on an RBI single by Jessica Adams giving Wise all the cushion she needed at 4-0.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – South Granville secured their second straight fast-pitch softball State Championship knocking off West Lincoln 10-5 in game three of the 2A State Championship series. The Vikings exploded for 8 runs in the second inning as they batted around with nine hits in the inning.
Abbi Colclough led the bottom of the second off with a double, and the rest of the Vikings jumped on board. Miranda Bark-er, the Vikings pitcher, helped her own cause following up Colclough’s double with an RBI single. West Lincoln pitcher Cassidy Wise retired the next two South Granville batters, but a Savannah Tilley single and Briana Coleman double chased her from the game.
Sophomore Addison Rhyne came in for the Rebels and South Granville bats greeted her rudely as Hunter Mundy and Megan White both singled to turn the order over and plate two more runs. Mundy and White both came around on a double by Col-clough. Then Baker came up for the second time in the inning

The walk-off home run also delivered a series sweep and back-to-back State Championships for Enka. Harris was named the series M.V.P. for her heroics.
The last chance rally for the Jets started with a lead off single by Brittany Fletcher which Kloyee Ander-son followed up with a single of her own. After Claire Crout grounded out back to the pitcher, Harris rose to the occasion driving a 1-0 pitch out of the park.

GAME 1 - West Forsyth plates 3 in the sixth to down Cape Fear 3-0
RALEIGH, N.C. – One big inning, that was the difference between a chance to clinch a State Championship during game two or facing elim-ination, as West Forsyth got all of their runs in the top of the sixth to down Cape Fear 3-0 in game one of the 4A Softball State Championship series.
Cape Fear pitcher Aubrey Reep had been on cruise control until a one-out walk in the top of the sixth to the Titan right fielder Bri Lucero. Lucero then stole second base before a single by Taylor Ferrell. Brooke Perry, West Forsyth’s starting pitcher, helped her own cause with a single following Ferrell’s and that is when Anna Epling broke the ice with an RBI-groundout to give West Forsyth the game’s first run. Hannah Runge followed that up with a two-run double giving the Titans the final 3-0 margin.
Brooke Perry was phenomenal in the pitching circle for West Forsyth, throwing a complete game and only allowing four hits. She struck out three on the afternoon with only one walk.

2016 4A Softball Championship RecapsGAME 2 - West Forsyth wins extra inning thriller 4-3 to sweep Cape Fear
RALEIGH, N.C. – After pitching a complete game shutout the night before in a game one win, West Forsyth pitcher Brooke Perry came up big again for the Titans in game two of the 4A Softball Champion-ship series, piloting the Titans to a 4-3 extra inning win and State Championship over Cape Fear.
Not only did Perry pitch the full eight innings, she led off the eighth inning with a double and Courtney Lamb came into run for Perry, crossing home on Anna Epling’s game-winning RBI double. Perry was named the series M.V.P. as she pitched 15 innings with a 2-0 record on the series, allowing three runs, only two earned, while only giving up 10 hits. She also struck out 10 batters in the two games with a single walk allowed.
After play in game two was suspended Saturday evening and pushed to Sunday afternoon, the Colts regrouped with their backs against the wall to start game two. Haley Cashwell led off with a single and Bri Bryant reached on an error. Two batters later Cape Fear pitcher Aubrey Reep lifted her team to the lead with a three-run homer putting the Colts in front for the first time in the series.
The lead was short-lived, however, as West Forsyth responded with a run in the bottom of the first as Cammy Pereira led off with a single and came around to score on an RBI-double by Taylor Fer-rell. In the second, the Titans knotted the game at three when Hannah Runge led off with a single then advanced to second as Sydney Vaughn drew a walk. Runge scored on a throwing error by the pitcher and Vaughn tied the game on an RBI-single by Pereira.
Both pitchers settled in for the middle innings as after the second inning, each team only managed to advance a runner past second base one time, both teams getting a runner to third in the fifth. With the two pitchers dueling in the circle, the game went to extra innings.
Cape Fear got a one-out single from Reep, but couldn’t get anything started in the top of the eighth
