For more than 25 years, keeping the “green” in Greenville has been the work of ReLeaf. ReLeaf is a community-based, volunteer and nonprofit organization that has planted and replaced more than 1,500 trees in Greenville. a message from the CHAIR

The Sierra Club, the largest and oldest environmental group in the US, pursues its mission, “To Explore, Enjoy and Protect the Planet”, through its advocacy for wise environmental legislation and the election of public officials who are willing to work for the environment. This year the Cypress Group reached out to all the candidates running for election to the Greenville City Council and requested an opportunity to meet and discuss their views on environmental issues affecting Greenville. Three

candidates agreed to meet with us, Calvin Mercer, Rick Smiley and Uriah Ward. Each completed a questionnaire and was interviewed by small groups of volunteers. Here are some of the key comments from these candidates.

Calvin Mercer noted his work for “smart growth”, a signature issue of his. He believes that density

in the core contributes to many good things - it reduces our footprint, increases tax base, gets citizens walking and healthier, contributes to improvement of social relations, and on and on. He emphasized the need for a leadership role, because the temptation will be to take the short-range approach and build without thinking through the long-term implications.

Rick Smiley strongly supports sustainable practices – planning for long term instead for the lowest

current price. Storm water practices are a major concern including protecting streams and watersheds, planting of trees and doing a better job of controlling development in flood plains.

Many cities have adopted the “Green City” initiative designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Uriah Ward would like to see Greenville set a similar bold goal and work towards it; this would

include incentivizing dense growth, committing to complete streets with sidewalks, bike paths, greenways and cross walks. The future development of Greenville depends in large part on the quality of life experienced by its residents; cleaner air and water results in less lung disease and illnesses due to toxins; increased use of walk ways and bike paths decreases chronic illness due to inactivity; reducing carbon emissions will contribute to a slowdown of climate change which threatens us and a beautiful cityscape lifts all our spirits.

In the last municipal election in Greenville less than 10% of eligible voters went to the polls. Small numbers make a big difference in outcome. I strongly encourage all eligible Sierra Club members to vote and recommend these three candidates who all have a commitment to the environment and have been endorsed by the Sierra Club.

November outing - croatan forest

November 18, 2017 - Saturday, 10 AM

Neusiok Trail Hike

The Neusiok Trail is one of the most scenic trails in eastern NC, and it is part of the developing Mountains-to-Sea Trail. It meanders over 20 miles in the eastern portion of the Croatan National Forest near the Neuse River. We will hike about 6 miles of the northernmost section of the trail, which rambles through an upland forest of pine and hardwoods and a swamp of cypress and palmetto, and ends along the sandy shoreline of the Neuse. The 3-hour trail is moderately difficult. There may be muddy areas and sometimes we have to ford a small ankle-deep creek. Be prepared with appropriate footwear or, optionally, to take your shoes off. Bring a lunch/snack and water and, if necessary,

layered clothing.

Meet in the parking lot of Pine Cliffs Recreation Area by 10:00 AM where we will shuttle cars to the trailhead. Greenville departees can meet in in the parking lot of the Hardee’s near Harris Teeter on Charles Blvd/Fire Tower by 8:00 AM. Register by emailing Tom Williams at [email protected], and use “Neusiok” in subject line. Or, on our meetup page at https://www.meetup.com/Cypress-Group/. Or, by calling Tom at 252-917-4180.

OBX Seafood festival / new group ? !

The Cypress Group is working to form a new coastal Group in

Northeast NC! Efforts are underway by Nags Head

residents!

What’s in a name? What’s in a logo? You pick!

Four coastal Groups: ??? - Cypress – Croatan - Cape Fear

Robin and Tom Frazier would love to start a new Group in northeast NC.

At the OBX Seafood Festival, they began getting the word out and signing up interested residents.

If you look at the 19 counties the Cypress Group covers,

you can see the wide range of diverse communities we try to support. http://www.sierraclub.org/north-carolina/groups

What's going on in Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, Perquimans or Dare,

may have little to do with what’s going on in Greene, Wayne, or Lenoir counties.

Wayne County is fighting hard for coal ash clean-up in their communities. Are people in Herford County worrying about coal ash?

Dare County has the controversial mid-Currituck bridge.

Have people in Greene county even heard about the proposed bridge?

How much is Dare County able to work on opposing the Atlantic Coast Pipeline when you’ve got to stop seismic blasting and offshore oil drilling?

Contact Robin and Tom and let them know you are interested in having a local

Sierra Club Group that can focus on coastal issues in your area!

Don’t put it off — Contact them TODAY! [email protected]

Landfill Harmonic ~A Symphony of the Human Spirit Landfill Harmonic follows the Recycled Orchestra of Ca-teura, a Paraguayan musical group that plays instruments made entirely out of garbage. When their story goes viral, the orchestra is catapulted into the global spotlight. Un-der the guidance of idealistic music director Favio Chavez, the orchestra must navigate a strange new world of arenas and sold-out concerts. However, when a natural disaster strikes their community, Favio must find a way to keep the orchestra intact and provide a source of hope for their town. The film is a testimony to the transformative power of music and the resilience of the human spirit.
