T he North Cape Coastal Drive is a smorgasbord of classic Island scenery, Acadian, Celtic and Aboriginal culture, small-hall to large-
scale entertainment and classic Island delicacies, featuring of course, world-famous oysters which have earned us the nickname The Canadian Oyster Coast. Life along the drive is very sea-centric, evoked in dozens of place names, attractions and community festivals. This is the Island coast you can be up close and personal with: red-clay roads that lead to secret coves; boats adorned with locally-imagined names like Water Tight Alibi; the City of Summerside’s
expansive Baywalk Coastal Trail; and people who share with their ancestors a love for the sea and a deep appreciation for the richness it brings to their lives.
As you browse and shop through this touring guide, keep your computer or tablet close at hand. There is much greater detail to help you plan at www.northcapedrive.com.

When quizzed on his favourite locations for signature Island photos when touring the region, Barrett referenced Kildare Capes and Norway Cliffs. Both areas boast breath-taking vistas that display all of the rugged beauty of our coastline.
When asked to pick one photo that is most memorable of the region, Wayne stated, "A young boy on horseback harvesting Irish Moss at Skinners Pond, because of the sense of time the image evokes. Whole families were at the beach working together, giving one a sense of family and community."
As our conversation ended Wayne added, "The thing I enjoy most about photographing this region is the diversity of images it provides. Whether it is people, landscape or nature, there are constant surprises throughout the year, it is an ever-changing landscape."
The Barrett and MacKay catalogue of images has documented our Island and places across Canada. Look for Mr. Barrett's latest work in The Atlantic Coast A Natural History, available in most bookstores.

How to Shuck Oysters
49Oysters, Acadie & Entertainment
O yster-shucking is a connoisseur’s art form, an entertaining,
conversational show in the hands of the most nimble and dexterous shuckers. World champions, you should know, have come from Western Prince Edward Island!
• Hold oyster in the palm of your hand, or hold tightly against a hard surface with the cup or deep side down.
• Protect your hand by wearing a heavy-duty rubber glove or folded kitchen towel.
• Keep the bottom shell level to prevent spilling liquor.
• Locate the hinge and insert a knife between the shells by gently working it back and forth.
• When the knife is well in, twist back and forth to open.
• Slide the knife across the top of the shell to cut the muscle and run under the body of the oyster.
How to Shuck Oysters
50 www.northcapedrive.com
Use seawater or salted water. In a large pot, bring about 2 inches of water to a rolling boil over high heat. Drop in the live lobsters, one at a time. Cover and
return to a boil as quickly as possible. When water returns to a boil, cook approximately 18 minutes for a 1- to 1¼-pound hard-shell lobster and 20 minutes for a 1½-pound hard-shell lobster. If the lobster has a soft shell, reduce the cooking time by 3 minutes. Lobsters will turn bright red when cooked.

Alberton: Celebrating our Centennial
W elcome to the Town of Alberton, the Heart of West Prince. In 2013 we will mark the Centennial of our
incorporation as a town, and we invite you to come celebrate with us!
The first settlers who came in the early 1800s were in-volved in the lumber industry but soon became more involved in agriculture. Their small community was called The Cross be-cause several roads crossed at the top
of the hill where Church Street and Main Street now meet.
In 1862, name of the community was changed to Alberton, in honour of Al-bert Edward, the Prince of Wales and later King Edward VII. Alberton became a village in 1873 and in 1913 was incorporated as a town.
We plan a number of events and activities throughout the year to highlight our history, including the unveiling of a town flag to mark our Centennial. There will also be entertainment featuring local artists, and the centennial theme will be part of a number of events such as the Prince County Exhibition parade.
Alberton is a central location from which to explore West Prince. It offers excellent shopping, restaurants serving everything from French cuisine to local specialties and friendly people ready to tell you where to find the best
beaches or the most striking views.
Visit the Alberton Museum and Genealogy Centre, take a walking tour to learn about Alberton’s history through a series of murals on buildings throughout the town centre, see a number of heritage build-ings in town, or relax at the gazebo by the town pond.
Come help us celebrate our history and heritage! Hope to see you soon.
