preciouspetsI think Louis Sabin, author of juvenile and young adult books, said it best, “No matter how little money and how few possessions you own, having a dog makes you rich.”

How many among us pet owners don’t experience the warmth, love and loyalty of our canine friends?

As a child, our family brought home Pepe, a mid-sized cream/apricot poodle. He immediately became an important mem-ber of our family, as well as an alpha-male competitor of my father’s. He was so happy, full of warmth and smarts. We loved him so much and I think of him often.

Now, Luna, an irrepressible Afghan Hound, Doberman Pin-scher, Akita, Chow and Alaskan Malamute mix is in my hus-band, Vince’s and my life. A rescue, she has snuggled her way into our hearts and souls and never fails to amuse us.

Luna is one of the most beautiful, loving, exuberant, alert and clever dogs I’ve ever known, and many would contest this as well.

My husband and I look forward to coming home to her inces-sant tail wagging as she wiggles her way over to us at the door; dancing in little circles. On more than one occasion I’ve noticed how much more grand a welcome Vince appears to receive; extra laps around the coffee table and kisses. However, I know the truth. She loves me like crazy too!

We are also comfortable knowing Luna is a natural watch dog; always at her lookout behind the living room picture

window. The sights, sounds or even just a hint of a sound alerts Luna. Always a sentry, she barks, whines or softly growls at the seeming “intruder”. Squirrels, cats, deer, pedestrians and vehicles have all gotten the Luna treatment.

Luna’s puppy like exuberance, though tempered a little with age, still exists to our delight. For the past four years my husband and I have been very joyful, and Luna has lots to do with it.

All of the snow this area has been getting is driving everyone insane, and apparently it has the same effect on dogs. During one of the many snowstorms, Parker was stuck inside and not able to play outdoors or see the neighbors. He is a very friendly dog and loves people, so it was really hard on him when he couldn’t be around others. One day the neighbors were driv-ing by the house and Parker recognized the car, so of course he immediately dashed outside and started furiously barking to get their attention. It worked, and they had to get out of their car just to say hello! He will do anything to be around more people and get outside.

Not only is Parker friendly and funny, but he is very smart. Whenever he wants something, he will ask for it with a differ-ent type of bark. For example, if he were hungry, he may do a high pitched bark; as opposed to a low pitched bark for if he wants to go outside. His family has learned to interpret these barks, so now they have their own little language!

Parker has had and will have lasting effects on his family. He has a special and unique relationship with each member and it brings them all closer together. He is always there to comfort someone when they are sad, or makes them laugh when they need it. When Parker needs it, his family is there for him too. He recently had a tumor on his toe, and had to have the toe removed. It was difficult for him, but he is doing better and has had the support of his family to help him. Parker is just as ener-getic and wild as he was before, if not even crazier! He is truly a unique, loving dog that is lucky to have a family that cares so much about him.

Things are looking up for Julia Russo right now. Playing varsity field hockey as a freshman alongside some of the best athletes in the school, Julia has proved to be a formidable opponent on the field. Extremely serious about field hockey and lacrosse, Julia has expanded her ability level beyond her age and is continuing to improve at an accelerated rate.

Julia would describe herself as kind, friendly, and athletic; this is exemplified whether you see her competing on the field or sitting down with her for a warm conversation. But she would definitely say that she devotes a lot of time and exerts a lot of energy into sports and athletics. As a student, Julia is versatile in the classroom: she can either listen atten-tively and absorb information, or actively participate and sense the information.

Overall, Julia always tries her best to work harder with a strong determination for honing her skills. Next to five other fresh-men, the Ianuzzi and Cammarata twins, and Devyn Aschen-bach, Russo has worked tirelessly to control the ball better and focus on setting up plays. As an attacker, Julia has to be aggres-sive and accurate when shooting on the goal. She admits that it was a bit intimidating, at first, to be playing with people who were one, two, even three years older than her. But it inspired her to keep pushing forward.

With Julia and the rest of her team, the West Essex High School Varsity Field Hockey program has had great success. Just this year, they had a record of 21 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. They were victorious in the Essex County Tournament, defeat-

ing Oak Knoll for the first time since 2006 for the win. Also, they placed second in the Essex/Union conference.

Field hockey began for Julia in 7th grade, when many of her friends joined and she decided to join them. She had originally played soccer, but after participating in a couple of hockey clin-ics, she decided to try it out. She fell in love with the sport, and hasn’t stopped since. She also plays for the New Heights field hockey team. In addition to field hockey, Julia also plays lacrosse for the West Essex program and the Steps Club Lacrosse Team. She began lacrosse in fifth grade, and plays in the combination midfielder-attacker position. As for her experiences in these sports, Julia has traveled as far as California and Florida for various tournaments and games!

In 2014, Julia’s New Heights team was the National Field Hockey Festival Winner in West Palm Beach, and won the Dis-ney Showcase festival in 2015.

Julia’s family has also played a large role in her success as an athlete. Her sister and parents are always there for her in some form or another, whether it’s traveling, taking off work, coming to her games, or just supporting Julia in her endeavors.

In the future, Julia hopes to continue playing sports throughout high school and college, hoping that all of her hard work will pay off in the future. At the moment, she is interested in attend-ing college in California and becoming a physical therapist.

Julia shared that to have success, she believes in “Always putting your best foot forward and never giving up.”

JuSt about a year ago, we family left our charming hoboken apartment to Start a new life in the burbS. our family waS growing, a perSonal buSineSS venture waS on itS way and the lack of parking/Storage with mini-city life had taken itS toll on all of uS. hoboken iS where it all began. it’S where i met my huSband craig Six yearS ago (a colorado tranSplant who haS now been in nJ for 13 yearS). it’S where we Spent our firSt yearS together after a beautiful wedding in riviera maya, mx. and it’S where our firSt daughter, maya reece (now 3 yearS old) waS born. now, north caldwell iS where new memorieS are being made every day. we welcomed our Second daughter, ruby laine, into our liveS on September 15, 2014 and thiS new town haS quickly Settled in aS “home” for the long term.

Craig is the Vice President of RC Andersen LLC, a local Con-struction Management-Consulting firm. When he’s not work-ing or building something for the house (a gym/yoga room in our basement is his most recent project) he can be found doing anything outdoors. Biking, skiing and golf are his favorite pas-times, although lawn care and general home maintenance seems to take up most of his spare time these days.

When Maya’s not toasting marshmallows with daddy around the back yard fire pit, or dancing to “Frozen” in our kitchen, she can be found playing with the neighbors, swimming in the town pool or enjoying the Grover Cleveland Park. Maya would rank the Bernstein’s trampoline and Ava and Bella Buccino’s dress up collection as a tie for second in the town activity category. We couldn’t have been more blessed when we discovered this ranch smack dab in the middle of these two amazing families.

As for me, I balance my time between motherhood and busi-ness owner of CHRISSY DAVENPORT Revitalize & Nour-ish. A new career for me that began as a dream and quickly evolved into an amazing new reality. After graduating from Brown University in 2000, I took a very traditional path and spent fourteen years in Corporate America. I earned my MBA at Seton Hall years later, became a volunteer with Essex County CASA and was able to balance it all until babies came along! Maya was my motivation to change course and study at the

Institute for Inte-grative Nutri-tion©. I turned my dual passions for healthy living/cooking and help-ing people into my new career as a holistic health coach. I partner with clients to achieve personal health goals by making gradual and effective changes to diet and lifestyle. Typically, my clients hope to improve nutrition for themselves or their fami-lies, address food sensitivities/allergies, increase energy or lose weight in a healthy sustainable fashion. My goal is to empower clients with the tools of planning, organizing, shopping and cooking so they are able to feel their best.

More than anything, we cherish our simple life, backyard BBQs, summer weekends at Nana and Poppy’s beach house (LBI), and growing with our Christian community at Emergence Church in Totowa.

We are truly blessed and look forward to spending many more years in North Caldwell embracing all this charming town has to offer.

Music notes have traveled with sophomore, Dean D’Antuono since the time he first started experimenting with instruments at the age of four years old. His first guitar, given to him by his father, created a passion that he embraces every day. Dean’s innate ability to produce different melodies and rhythms made him destined to be a successful musician. At the age of 16, Dean has become an accomplished guitarist, singer, and songwriter.

Dean has been a resident of North Caldwell since he was four years old. This is the same time he discovered his interest for music. Dean feels as though North Caldwell is a great place to live because “the town is surrounded by everything he loves, yet tucked away from the chaos.”

Dean has been a member of multiple bands and is currently the lead singer of “Silent Return.” The band has an old modern rock flare and has had the opportunity to play throughout New Jer-sey. “Silent return” is made up of four male musicians, including Dean’s older brother, Dillon. Two of “Silent Returns” most pop-ular songs are “Can’t catch me now” and “Get away from you.”

Dean’s older brother, Dillon, has been right by his side through his musical journey. Dillon, a freshman at NJIT, plays guitar in the band. Dean feels he has a bond with his brother that far surpasses most brotherly connections. “Through constantly working together in the band, we have such a great friendship. We work hand in hand.” said Dean.

As a musician, Dean says it’s very important to have a positive outlook and to be persistent in order to be successful. With this mentality, Dean has been able to perform at nearby venues such as Dingbatz in Clifton, Mexicali Live in Teaneck, and Bardi’s Bar and Grill in Pequannock. Deans stresses that there is nothing better than having an energetic crowd. After hours of working in the studio and creating music, a live audience is something that makes all the hard work worth it.

“People will reject us when we ask to perform, but we know if we lose our determination, we wont be able to get these great opportunities.” said D’ Antuono.

Dean’s parents play a fundamental role in shaping his musi-cal career. His mom is responsible for orchestrating the band’s

website and taking pictures during performances. Dean’s father acts as their manager and works to find gigs for the band.

Dean aspires to be a song engineer one day and to continue producing music. Dean is still undecided to where he would like to attend college one day, but he knows he will pick a place that will cater to his musical needs. Green Day, Foo Fighters, and The Jets are among Dean’s favorite bands and are a great source of inspiration from which he channels his creativity.

At such a young age, Dean and his band have already experi-enced performing at huge venues such as Bamboozal and the iconic club, The Stone Pony. “Silent Return” advertises their show times through Facebook, Instagram, and their own, per-sonal website. Their music is also available on iTunes.

It is apparent that “Silent Return” has a promising future and will continue to reach new levels of triumph.

“The goal of doing what I do is to have people forget about their worries and to have fun at our shows.” said D’Antuono.

MAY – MEMORIAL DAY – SUMMER & NO MUNICIPAL TAX INCREASE

As we all know, May is a solemn month as we celebrate Memorial Day. The annual Memorial Day service on May 25th will be in front of the town monument – Gould Avenue at 8:00am sharp. The traditional Memorial Day Parade begins at 9:30am. Parades are

great, barbeques and other fun events, but we must never forget that the reason we celebrate this day is in recognition of the many men and women that gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we can enjoy all holidays.

The pool season begins on May 23rd. We are hoping for as many people as possible to join as we have new water slides, shuffle board court and other new amenities. Saturday, May 30th we are having an open house party at the pool and all are welcome with the rain date scheduled for May 31st.

I’d like to congratulate the winners of the First Annual Mayor’s Cup. The boy’s 7th and 8th grade Alabama team coached by Mark Mansfield; the 6th grade boys Clippers team coached by Mike Caplan; the boys 3rd and 4th grade Notre Dame team coached by Don Long; the girls 3rd and 4th grade Florida team, coached by Glenn Lieberman. My congratulations also goes to the 7th and 8th grade boys WEYSA Championship team, Miami, coached by George Massoud.

On Monday, March 23rd, flags in North Caldwell and New Jersey were lowered to half-staff in recognition and of New Jersey native United States Marine Captain Stanford H. Shaw III. He lost his life on March 10th in a training exercise where a Black Hawk helicopter crashed off the coast of Eglin, Florida. Captain Shaw was a dedicated and decorated Marine and the receipt of many honors including the Navy and Army Corps Commendation, Iraq Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with two stars.

Team Spain, one of the 1st and 2nd grade North Caldwell girls recreation soccer teams, finished the fall 2014 soccer season undefeated at 10-0. This was quite an accomplishment con-sidering that many of the 2nd graders were on the same team together last year when they finished the 2013 season with 1 win and 9 losses. Team Spain was made up of 12 girls, seven 2nd graders and five 1st graders. Players were Jordyn Amoroso, Alexandra Angelo, Sophie Foodim, Logan Goldstein, Lind-sey Hain, Lexi Hain, Alivia Lugo, Alyssa Prontnicki, Allison Randall, Asha Rastogi, Ava Simonetti, Sienna Tilton. The girls were coached by team members’ parents, Andrew Hain, Eric Goldstein and Joe Angelo.

Many of the 1st graders were new to the game but showed con-sistent improvement through the season. Following the last game the team celebrated with a pizza party. Mayor Alessi was told about the amazing season and invited the girls to the Novem-ber town council meeting to present them with a special award. Mayor Alessi spoke to the girls and congratulated them on a fantastic season. He and his council recognized the girls one at a time and presented each of them with a Sports Award in rec-

ognition of outstanding performance in the sport of soccer. They posed for pictures with the team and the parents and told the girls how proud they should be of their hard work, dedication, and successful season. Needless to say, but there were a lot of wide eyes and smiles from the young girls at this celebration! The coaches reiterated how proud they were of the girls and how far they came this year and encouraged the girls to keep playing.

On Monday, June 1, 2015, Essex County CASA will be hosting its 20th annual golf outing at Green Brook Country Club. The event continues to grow as many local indi-viduals and companies will come out to support an incredible organization that provides a very important service

to foster children in Essex County.

In addition to a fun-filled 18-hole best ball format competition, attendees will enjoy cocktails and a gourmet dinner prepared by Green Brook’s renowned chef, Anthony Villanueva (aka “Chef Tony”). The post-golf activities will also include a silent auc-tion and a brief presentation about the significance that CASA’s advocates, staff and volunteers have in the community.

CASA for Children of Essex County promotes the welfare of children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse, neglect or abandonment. CASA trains and supervises volunteers to speak up for the best interests of these children in court, helping to move each child towards a safe and permanent home. Proceeds from the annual golf outing are a vital source of support, ensuring that foster children in Essex County will always have a strong ally in CASA.

For any non-golfers who are interested in attending, CASA is also planning a “Ladies Luncheon” which includes a compli-mentary yoga session. The ladies luncheon is $75 per person.

Non-golfers are also encouraged to attend the dinner that starts at 5:30 p.m.

For last few months, we’ve been talking about your theoretical a “new” addition, which includes expanding your kitchen to a larger size, with a basement beneath and more bedroom space above. We’ve done permits, planning and put in a foundation. Today, we are talk about framing.

Framing is the process where the wooden “skeleton” of the house is built. It’s the image of men nailing together boards that most of us see when the news talks about construction. It’s a fascinating process to watch, where you can see things quickly go from “nothing” to “something.”

On top of the new masonry foundation, our framing crew is going to lay floor beams and flooring, creating the new floor and platform your addition will be built on. On some projects, that might be the same size as the foundation, but also your architect can call for the framers to cantilever out over the foundation

wall. This is where the beams that create the “ribs” of the floor hang a few feet over the edge of the basement wall, allowing the first floor to be larger than the basement (thus saving money on the foundation size).

On top of the floor, or platform, framing crews will build the outside walls. Most outside walls are made with 2x6’s, allowing more thickness (and more insulation) than the standard 2x4 con-struction used for inside walls. The framers will account for all the windows and doors at just the right height and size and then frame them with a heavier beam over the openings. These beams, referred to as “headers,” provide structural support.On your addition, we are expanding an existing house and need to tie our new building into the existing house. Since we are dou-bling the size of the kitchen, a 25 foot span of the back wall will be removed. The challenge is that you have a second floor over the existing kitchen. Removing the house’s existing back wall will surely cause the second floor to collapse, so we need something needs to hold it up. Since you don’t want a support column in the middle of your new kitchen, we are going to need a steel beam.

“What a minute?” I hear you ask. “A steel beam? We’re not building a skyscraper here.”

True, but even home construction sometimes uses steel for strength and your architect has called for a “flitch plate beam.” This is a “sandwich” beam of wood on the outside and a ½ thick steel plate in the inside, all bolted together. It will be supported at each end on support footings we built as part of the new foundation’s concrete walls. This steel and wood beam provides greater strength compared to wood alone and is what holds up your second floor.

Your interior walls are framed next, typically with 2x4s, The second floor “platform” is created just like the first and ties in to your existing house. The roof is added at the top and is tied into the existing roof. The outside walls are covered with sheets of plywood, giving your new addition its basic shape.

At this point, the windows and exterior doors are set into place. While we are far from finished, we now can tell the difference between “inside” and “outside.” The last step for our framers is to get the entire house wrapped in “house wrap.” This helps seal the house up will help prevent drafts after the house is sided later down the road.

So now you have the rough addition. Next month, we’ll look at siding and roofing options.

Serves 2Time to cook 20 minTime to prep 10 minIngredients:2 salmon steaks (Pacific or Alaskan wild salmon is my preference)2 tbsp fresh lemon juice6 tbsp extra virgin olive oilSea salt / pepper to taste1 tbsp chopped shallots

Ingredients for salad:4 cups of arugula (enough to fill each of your guests’ plates)1 cup strawberries, sliced 2 large handfuls of walnuts (break them into smaller pieces) ¼ cup feta cheese, crumbled

Instructions:To make the dressing, in a small bowl, combine the lemon juice,

shallots, salt and pepper and whisk until the salt dissolves. Add the olive oil in a thin stream, whisking constantly until the dressing is well blended. Set aside.

Toss the arugula, sliced strawberries, walnuts and feta cheese in a bowl with clean hands (hands are the best utensils)!

Place salmon on parchment paper (not the same as waxed paper); pat dry with paper towel, season with salt and pepper. Fold parchment around fish and tightly roll edges toward fish as if wrapping a gift. Bake at 375 for about 20 minutes or until a fork flakes the fish apart.

When you’re ready to serve, drizzle dressing over the salad, toss, lay your salmon carefully atop greens and drizzle more dress-ing. Voila!

May is Disability insurance awareness Month. And, though most people feel invincible, and believe “it will never happen to me”, 2012 statistics showed that for workers age 21 to 64, 10.4% of them are currently disabled [http://disabilitysta-tistics.org/reports/acs.cfm?statistic=1]. That’s more than one per ten adults!

What is often assumed is that to be disabled means to be com-pletely unable to work. And, that’s partially correct: to qualify for the Social Security Disability Income benefit, a person would have to be unable to work in any way. [http://www.ssa.gov/planners/disability/dqualify4.html]

Others think that their workers’ compensation or employer ben-efits will be enough if something were to happen. Let’s explore those. Workers’ compensation pays a benefit when an injury is sustained while actively engaged in the scope of your job; not those sustained during personal time.

As for employer benefits, remember, you must be employed to have them (if you are between employers, then, unfortunately, the only coverage you would have is coverage you personally owned). And, not every employer provides Disability Insurance coverage. Ask!

Typically, your employer will provide a percentage of your income (gross salary excluding bonus). For Short-Term Dis-ability coverage, they may cover 100% of your gross salary for a finite period such as six months. For Long-Term Disability coverage, your employer may provide Disability Insurance that covers a percentage of your income, such as 60%. This would be provided for a longer time frame, possibly to your age 65, should you become disabled.

Remember, because this is a benefit your employer pays for on your behalf, they are able to take a tax deduction on those premiums. In turn, should you go on Disability Claim, the disability income paid out to you is fully taxable as ordinary income to you.

Based on what your employer provides you, you can only obtain additional personal disability insurance for the balance of your

income (if your employer covers 60%, you can obtain coverage amounting to no more than 40% of your income) . . . otherwise you’d profit by being disabled! In turn, because you’d be paying the premium for your personal policy out of net income, then should you go on claim, the disability insurance income you receive from your personal policy is tax-free.

Like your Car Insurance; Homeowners’ Insurance; and Term Life insurance, let us hope that Disability Insurance is an expense that helps you sleep better at night knowing you’re pro-tected. But, that you live a content working life never having to take a claim.
