Crème brulée. Several countriesclaim to be the birthplace of crèmebrulée. The name is French, meaning“burnt cream,” and the dish consists ofindividual portions of custard with a

Baked Alaska. Named by a chef in1867 to honor the recently acquiredterritory, Baked Alaska is created byplacing hard ice cream on a bed ofsponge cake and covering it withmeringue. It is placed briefly in a hotoven to toast the meringue.
