  • Ladies and Gentlemen. This year North Barrier Branch celebrates 78 years of Surf Lifesaving. What a wonderful achievement the Branch has done for the community of North Queensland. It is with great delight that I submit my second report as President of North Barrier Branch

North Barrier Branch has had an extremely busy and successful year in all aspects of Surf Lifesaving. The Clubs in our Region are Arcadian, Ayr, Bowen, Eimeo, Forrest Beach, Mackay, Townsville Picnic Bay and Sarina. We have triumphed again and been a force to reckon with both on and off the Beach. In summarising the year that was, I ask you to remember these achievements. It is with pride and a great event for North Barrier, that Townsville Picnic Bay are host-ing the State IRB Championships on the long weekend. This is such a coup for the Region. Patrols This year throughout all of our Branches we have performed over 17,800 voluntary Beach Patrol Hours. This is a magnificent effort of behalf of all our clubs. Our efforts in our region equal a saving of $1.1M to the local governments This year saw Zero Preventable Deaths at our patrolled beaches. Sponsors Each year it becomes more difficult to obtain Major Sponsors we need all the help we can get. I wish to sincerely thank all our sponsors, both large and small for their contribution in particular BHP for the sponsorship of $30K. Your support is most appreciated by the four northern Clubs in our Branch. Relocation This year saw the relocation of our Branch Office (now to be known as Regional Operations Centre), from our premises on Ingham Rd, out to the QPWS Site in Palleranda. This new sight has an abundance of space for storage and many plans to become the prime Surf Life Saving “hub” in North Queensland. Surf Girl This year our Branch had 6 Entrants in Miss Surf Girl. Our Entrants performed to extremely high praise throughout the whole season, again showing our region as the pillar of Queensland we know it to be. The girls raised a culiminative total of $281, 198.71, which is 32% of the State total ($882, 866.82). Well done girls that is an excellent effort. Regional Staff I would be remiss if I did not thank the SLSQ Staff for their abundance of assistance and guidance through out the season. This is all staff right from the top at Surf Rescue House and through to our regional staff, headed by Regional Manager Jenny Neal. We have had a few changes due to various reasons, but the team as a whole has shown extreme sta-bility and determination. Our Mackay LDO has been filled whilst Demelza is on Maternity Leave, Greg Willey is doing an excellent job. Also whilst we have had some gaps in Administration Sam Wheeler has stepped in and done an amazing job to clean up some processes.

    PRESIDENTS REPORT 2013/2014

  • PRESIDENTS REPORT 2013/2014 CONTINUED

I would like to make special note of our Townsville LDO Jeremy Best who had stepped up dramatically over the past season, filling basically every role imaginable on top of doing the job he is renowned for doing so well.

Conclusion This year we have some major achievements in our Branch. A number of our youth attended Camp Radical at Picnic Bay in March. This is an invaluable experience for all of those who attended. We have also had increased participation in both State Camps. The training and development that our members have received by attending these courses will benefit our Region. The Youth Committee has been going great guns all season, again securing the running of our Annual Dinner after the amazing show they put on last year. I look forward to a great night had by all. I would like to personally congratulate our State Award recipients from the season, they have all had roles to fill throughout the state and have served SLSQ, North Barrier and their Branches proud. These were; Mary Parker – U18 Lifesaver of the Year, Terry Lund – Volunteer of the Year, Wade Sinclair – Coach of the Year (Australian Winner), Michael Wilson – Rookie Coach of the Year and Rod Finney – Rookie Official of the Year. In competition this year we have seen all carnivals runs well all season with fierce competition between the Clubs in North Barrier Branch. Our Clubs were also well represented at Worlds, Aussies and State Carnivals with a number of our Clubs being awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals. These results are a reward for training, coaching and performance and you should all be very proud of the achievements you have made. It is with pride and a great event for North Barrier, that Townsville Picnic Bay are hosting the State IRB Championships on the long week-end. This is such a coup for the Region. In closing I would finally like to thank the NBB Executive. Our teamwork and leadership throughout the season has had us achieve some amazing goals. This is very pleasing especially as there have been a few of us come into these roles very new. I look forward to another great season, with another great team. George Clarke NBB President

  • On behalf of the SLSQ Team in North Barrier I am honoured to submit this report with thanks and congratulations extended to our Club Members and all Volunteers who have contributed to the Regional success this past twelve months. I am delighted to confirm we have lived up to the vision of “ Zero preventable deaths in Queensland Waters” and the dedication and commitment provided from the Club Members across the Region through instilling guidance and education to the people frequenting our beaches has ensured our beaches remained safe for all participating in beach related activities. The Members of North Barrier Branch have worked hard this past twelve months dedicating their time and resources to safe practices, compliance & financial matters, reporting progress and full attend-ance at the many meetings necessary to ensure the Region is progressive and responsible to enhance Surf Lifesaving and Surf Sports for our Region. There have been many highlights over the year and North Barrier Branch once again shone through with six Surf Girl entrants proudly representing their Clubs, North Barrier Branch and Surf Lifesaving Queensland. The young Ladies worked diligently over the twelve month period raising the profile of their Clubs and Surf Lifesaving within their local communities and beyond, whilst raising much needed funds for their Clubs to continue to strive forwards. We proudly congratulate all of the six young Ladies and their Teams of supporters, who put themselves out there working tirelessly with fundraising events; promotions and activities to raise Community awareness of Surf Lifesaving Queensland and respective Surf Lifesaving Clubs. Your efforts are truly recognised and appreciated by all in North Barrier and SLSQ. The Youth Committee is something for the Branch/Region to brag about, as the Youth Members with-in this Committee are the upcoming leaders of Surf Lifesaving and this group of young People are showing their commitment, skills and abilities will ensure the North Barrier Branch continues to move forward to meet the needs of the upcoming generations to take Surf Lifesaving into the future. Club development and training continues to be a major focus in North Barrier, with the LDO in Townsville undertaking over 240 courses through-out the season and combined with the Club training, shows there has certainly been a lot of work completed with skilling and up-skilling across all Clubs within the Region. This is a great achievement for all involved and all those participating giving our Members the skills required to undertake their patrol obligations when becoming a Surf Lifesaver. LDO Demelza became a Mum to little Jimmy Pete, and is currently on maternity leave with Greg Willey stepping across from Lifeguard Services to the Development role with ease. Monthly Administrator meetings have been on-going with good feedback and we will continue to work with Administrators across the Region to create best practices and ensure support is provided at all times to assist the Clubs where and when required. Little Lifesavers and Secondary School Surf League has been very successful and has continued to grow with increasing numbers in both locations (Mackay & Townsville).

    REGIONAL MANAGER REPORT 2013/2014

  • We endured record numbers of marine stingers this season and a few cyclone threats also, which required beach closures but these things are out of our control and for the locals and long term residents, these are normal conditions that come with living in the tropics. A little shark here and there and a crocodile or two kept everyone on their guard at the time, however our Lifesavers and Lifeguards know the dangers and work with the public to ensure safety at all times is paramount. It is with much appreciation we recognise the dedication, work and contributions of our Volunteers and their families across the Region. Without you, we would not be here and your commitment to Community, your Club and Branch, is a credit to you all. The constant requirements for training, undertaking beach & water safety, leading the way with the highest standards of values and providing continuous support and guidance to the beach-goers is quite an achievement and something everyone should be immensely proud of. Your commitment and dedication to Surf Lifesaving is commendable and on behalf of SLSQ, we sincerely thank you. We also sincerely thank our Sponsors and Partners for your support and commitment to our Clubs, North Barrier Our relocation to Pallarenda would not have been possible without the support of Townsville City Council and State Government and we thank you, for all of your assistance. The premises and location at Pallarenda are now aligned to the needs of the Branch and the Clubs and this move was a major highlight for our Region. In all of our locations across the Region, our local Councils (Mayors, CEO’s and Council Staff) have continued to support Surf Lifesaving for our Clubs and Branch and we thank you for your on-going assistance and commitment. BHP Billiton is also a major Sponsor for North Barrier Branch and it has been a pleasure working with Graeme Nielson through-out the year. We once again thank BHP Billiton for their continued support and contributions to North Barrier Branch. The support provided by BHP Billiton for the four Northern Clubs is a tremendous help to keep our Clubs gear and equipment up to date and we look forward to continuing this partnership with BHP well into the future. And finally to the North Barrier Branch Executive Team and to my own Team, the North Barrier Regional Staff, what a year it has been and I know you have all worked hard for the Branch and on top of this, I have worked you all very hard with expectations at the highest level. What a great job you have done and I look forward to our next year as we continue to move forward progressively achieving great things for our Region. Finally to the SLSQ Senior Management Group and my Peers at SLSQ, thanks for your help and guidance over the past twelve months and once again “What a year it has been “. Stay safe in Life and Lifesaving.

    Jenny Neal NBB Regional Manager

    REGIONAL MANAGER REPORT 2013/2014 CONTINUED

  • Once again we have come to the end of a successful patrolling year Congratulations to all our patrolling members & Lifeguard Services on completing another fatality free year. This is our core business & the impact on our patrols should be our uppermost consideration in all our decision making. The year has not been without it’s challenges. Not the least the move from our Ingham Rd premises earlier in the year. We are currently sharing our new home at Pallarenda however we are already reaping the benefits. Notwithstanding the financial benefit of considerable rent relief, we now have unlimited off street parking & increased office space & storage together with enormous potential once our cotenants vacate in the near future. Jenny Neal has now completed her first year in the position of Regional Manager & now has a much more extensive knowledge of our operations. She has brought enthusiasm & energy to the job as well as considerable managerial experience & has introduced a number of office efficiencies & initiatives. Further she has workshopped with Branch Council & developed a new Strategic Plan for 2014-2017. Recruitment & Retention continues to be one of the movements biggest issues. Similarly, attracting volunteers to take on positions in our clubs & the Branch seems to be increasingly difficult. The optimisation of new technology & streamlined processes is essential to attract volunteers who seek to contribute in these roles. The Annual Awards night is an opportunity to recognise our volunteers & acknowledge their contributions. We encourage all clubs to endeavour to take the time & effort to complete the necessary application forms. Just knowing someone made the effort to prepare the nomination delivers a message that one’s efforts are appreciated regardless of whether or not you are the overall winner. The introduction of monthly Administration meetings has proved very popular & beneficial to our Club administrators providing a forum for them to seek guidance as issues arise & a networking forum where they can share common issues & draw on solutions that have proved successful in other clubs. We extend our appreciation & thanks to all our volunteers & staff especially our Administrator Betty Sheret & Samantha Wheeler who has ably filled in for Betty during her extensive leave. Congratulations to all our competitors who have performed well in the various Surf Sports competitions & have been recognised elsewhere throughout this booklet. Well done to all of our Surf Girls who made excellent ambassadors for their clubs & North Barrier Branch in addition to raising well needed funds. We must also thank our sponsors & supporters whose assistance enables us to maintain our services . Finally an enormous thank you to the club Presidents & Branch Officers who continue to volunteer in these thankless, time consuming positions striving for the betterment of Lifesaving in our region Whether you are stepping down or have accepted nomination for another tenure, it is now time to take time out to acknowledge the valued services provided & celebrate our achievements on a job well done. • Lifesaving Service in North Barrier Branch has overall strived in the 2013/2014 Season. The dedication and commitment to our communi-ty through volunteer service, has ensured the utmost quality of safety to our beach going public. As a result we have again completed a sea-son with no loss of life on Patrolled Beaches in our region. This is a job well done by our clubs and their members. Patrol Agreements Our clubs are continuing to ensure commitment to peak service deliv-ery with the annual Patrol Agreement Process. This season we looked to ensure all clubs were meeting as close to the maximum agreement possible under their circumstances. We are proud to say as a whole there has been vast improvement across the board. A summary of changes to patrol agreements for the 2013/2014 season is outlined as below; Forrest Beach: Increase Area of Operation boundaries to Cassidy Beach in the south and 1km North of Residential area (as covered by Roving Patrol). Arcadian: No Alteration. Townsville Picnic Bay: Outpost Hours (Picnic Bay Magnetic Island), extended to 9am to 3pm during every Sunday of School Holidays & Public Holidays. Ayr: Saturday Patrol Hours Extended to 1pm to 5pm.

Summer Holiday Patrol Period Hours Extended to Finish at 6pm. Commitment to assist Bowen SLSC with patrols where-ever deemed necessary.

Bowen: Reduction of necessary Bronze Medallion holders needed on patrol. Eimeo: Saturday Patrol Hours Added 1pm to 5pm. Mackay: Increase in Patrol strength required on beach patrol. Sarina: Increase in Area of Operation to include Campwin Beach via Roving Patrol.

Summer Holiday Patrol Period Hours Extended to Finish at 6pm.

  • Patrol and First Aid Inspections This season we re-introduced the Patrol Inspections and First Aid Room Inspections, in order to ensure quality of patrol is kept to the highest of standards against requirements set both in the Patrol Agree-ments and the SLSQ Patrol Operations Manual. We thank Lex Johnson (Deputy Director of Lifesaving for conducting these audits). As such results from the Inspections are as follows:

The First Aid Room Audits were completed in a new format upon the appointment of our First Aid Of-Officer (John Furnell) late in the season. This simple process relies on the club auditing their own facili-ties against the requirements set in the Patrol Operations Manual. Results of the First Aid Audits are as follows:

  • Patrolling Club of the Year The return of requirement of clubs to report and meet at Lifesaving Committee meetings has received somewhat mixed responses. As such it was seen to use this tool to decide the Patrolling Club of the Year. It is important to clubs share information with branch via reports and meeting s in order to ensure we maintain our peak service standards and preparedness for any new initiatives and changes that re-late to Patrolling and Operational Services. General

The patrol season as a whole has been successful with a few items to note; A resident crocodile has been lurking around Forrest Beach Stinger Net. The 6-8 Foot Animal has caused the beach to be closed. Plans are now in place with meetings to be held between EHP, SLSQ, Forrest Beach SLSC and the Hinchinbrook Shire Council. Bowen remains a high alert Surf Life Saving Club with assistance needing to be provided by Branch, SLSQ and the other Surf Life Saving Clubs. A workshop is being scheduled to tackle this ongoing issue. Townsville has seen an influx of Marine Stinger activity resulting in the closure of many beaches Cyclonic activity was again at the forefront of our season with closures throughout the region. New regulations towards IRB Operations are coming into action very soon, with the use of Life-jackets and Helmets. The Digital Radio Network is now in final stages of being upgraded, this should give us full com-munication capabilities across our region.

  • This year’s stinger season got off to a late start and whilst last season numbers of Chrionex fleckeri peak in January, this season large adults were seen well into April and May, causing the stinger nets to stay in place well into what is normally considered the “off” season for jellyfish. A total of 44 Chironex fleckeri and 5 Irukandji where caught in the local waters. An additional 195 other species of jellyfish were also caught over the season. Marine Stinger safety is a part of life in North Queensland and second nature to our clubbies. Once again through diligent risk management and stinger drags, the North Barrier Branch clubs ensured only a few marine envenomation's were suffered on our beaches.

On behalf of the North Barrier Branch I extend my appreciation to all members who through vigilance and service kept our beaches safe for both the public and our members this season.

    Yours in lifesaving.

  • This season during the proficiency process this season we updated our skills and those who held IRB crew did a national unit of competence as part of their proficiency. Next seasons proficiency (Skill Maintenance) will have a very short online component and have a few options on how to do the practical part of the skills maintenance. Each club will let the individual members know how their skills maintenance can be done. The branch will run a few courses during the off season. Probably weekend courses for our rural clubs. If you see a course advertised make sure you note the times and days and let us know your attending. It doesn’t matter if the course is in Bowen and you are in Mackay, join in, share your knowledge and get to know some more clubbies outside your club. See you on the beach. • Director of Membership Services Tori Demopoulos Youth Committee Report Director of Junior Activities Report Glen Miller Development Program Report (Camp Radical 2014) Recognition Awards– Fiona Clyde Memorial Scholarship 2013 Recognition Awards

  • What a year this has been in the membership services realm! As I have only held the Director of Membership Services (DOMS) position for half the season, the main focus was identifying areas and clubs that required assistance, identifying what areas were working well and finding out what our members want to see more of and what they think can be improved. By cleaning these areas up will bring North Barrier Branch back into line with the rest of Queensland in terms of member development, junior activities, member recognition and member protection. All aspects that allow us to keep our members, happy and healthy, an essential aspect to ensuring we keep our core business running smoothly. The following outlines what was noted throughout the 2013/14 season: Member Development: Development programs are improving and becoming more popular from year to year within the North Barrier Branch. Development programs aren’t only run within clubs, but also on a branch, state and also national level. Camp Radical 2014 This year saw our Branch Development Program completed towards the end of the season and appropriately named and themed Camp Radical. We sent approximately 30 of our upcoming young leaders from around the branch to Picnic Bay, Magnetic Island, for a weekend of development and fun activities. State Youth Excellence Program Great effort from North Barrier this year with our best attendance in a long while; in all we sent eight young members in the 15-17years age category, down to Burleigh to experience the State Program. They have all come back with brilliant ideas, some of which we have already seen come to fruition. The names of the members that attended were:

Danielle Soutar (Townsville Picnic Bay) Lachlan Parker (Townsville Picnic Bay) Mary Parker (Townsville Picnic Bay) Marion Jones (Ayr) Tyler Williams (Bowen) Brenton Sandford (Eimeo) Alex Finney (Mackay)

Out of this program we would also like to highly congratulate: * Mary Parker & Alex Finney who were invited to be part of the Open Forum Panel due to their success at the State Awards (U18 & U14 Junior Lifesavers of the Year). Mary Parker was awarded Lifesaver's Lifesaver and tied with Soraya Scott from Ellis Beach. State Leadership Excellence Program We were boosted on this program by having one of our members, Jeremy Best (Arcadian SLSC) as part of the Co-ordination team for this program, as subsequent award from his attendance at National Leadership College. Youth Involvement Program (YIPs) YIPs have gained a bit of steam this year with Mackay and Ayr both jumping on board and giving the pro-gram a red hot go. Mackay has found quite a bit of success in this area and I believe there are some mem-bers ready to receive the first level (Bronze) Awards. A great achievement and the first I believe in our Branch. We realize other clubs are involved as well and we would like to hear about it so please let us at Branch know.

    DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP SERVICES 2013/2014

  • Youth Committee This season saw North Barrier Branch Youth Committee complete their first season. This idea came from responses we were receiving at Camp Troppo (2012/13 season NBB Development Camp) that the Youth want more of a voice, and didn't we give it to them. In their first year the Youth Committee has been responsible for the re-invigoration of the Annual Dinner, creating their own logo, promoting a competition to have a new NBB Logo, seeking their own sponsorship and have even assisted in facili-tating a Lifesaving Exchange from Surf Life Saving Central Coast (NSW). With the committee member numbers increasing, the Youth Committee have also begun holding fundraising events such as raffles and movie nights. Member Recognition: Wow! All I can say is what an amazing improvement we have had this season. I would like to highlight some of the recognition that we have already achieved this season at the State Awards Dinner, and hope that everyone attends the North Barrier Branch Annual Dinner to congratulate the remaining members we are recognizing.

Alex Finney - U14 Junior Lifesaver of the Year Michael Wilson - Rookie Coach of the Year Wade Sinclair - Coach of the Year (and Australian Coach of the Year) Rod Finney - Rookie Official of the Year Mary Parker - U18 Junior Lifesaver of the Year Terry Lund - Volunteer of the Year

Jupiter's Summer Surf Girl Program Once again the North Barrier Branch has seen a wonderful representation in the 2013/14 Jupiter's Summer Surf Girl Program. I was fortunate enough to mentor these ladies over the past 12 months and also at their judging week held on the Gold Coast. A huge congratulations to the 6 entrants and to their clubs, you have done a wonderful job, it certainly is not easy. The 23 entrants across the state raised a total of $882,866.82, with an amazing $281,198.71 of that figure coming from the North Barrier Branch.

Rachael Clarke (Townsville Picnic Bay) - $125,750.51 (Fundraiser Runner Up) Brydie Reents (Ayr) - $48,649.03 Melody May (Bowen) - $5,176.57 Bianca Arbeithuber (Eimeo) - $25,096.60 Maegan Cass (Mackay) - $45,187.32 Breanna Bierton (Sarina) - $31,338.68

If you don’t have much of an idea of the role of a Jupiter's Summer Surf Girl, I encourage you to ap-proach any of the following entrants and speak to them about their journey. Once again ladies and your clubs, congratulations on a wonderful year. All in all, it has been a fantastic year in Membership Services, and looking forward to an even better year to come. Look out for some more new initiatives, especially from the Youth Committee and also an invigorated Branch Development Program. Tori Demopoulos NBB Membership Services Director

  • Vision: Maintain and increase Youth membership by working together across North Barrier Branch to develop leaders and have fun. The North Barrier Branch Youth Committee is an initiative that was started in the 2012/2013 Season. The aim of the Youth Committee is to give members in the age group (14-17 years) a voice amongst their committees and within the Branch. The Youth Committee is tasked with ensuring that members around this age group, continue to be involved in the Surf Life Saving movement by coming up with initiatives that entice them to be involved. The North Barrier Branch Youth Committee works on a mentoring structure, with the ideal to mimic the North Barrier Branch Executive Committee and other similar positions. Mentors are chosen from the 18-25 years age category and have significant experience from Leader-ship Development Pathways of Surf Life Saving. The job of the mentors is to guide the members of the youth committee and be a sounding board for when approaching the members of their various committees. Mentors 2013/2014

Senior Mentor: Jeremy Best (Arcadian/ SLSQ) Mentor: Tori Demopoulos (Arcadian/ NBB) At the March 2014 meeting a slight change to the structure of the committee was decided on, it now currently sits as below: Youth Committee 2012/2013

We are aiming to have our first AGM around the time of the North Barrier AGM so keep a look out for this information. Meetings of the Youth Committee are held the second Tuesday of every month, usually via tele-link, but also sometimes as face to face, usually in conjunction with fun activities. YOUTH COMMITTEE YEAR OF ACHIEVEMENTS

Commencement of North Barrier Branch Youth Committee and Regular meetings – not a small task when you consider the 500+kms of coast our branch spans, the ability to hold regular meetings and even endeavour to have them face to face as much as possible is a great step in the right direction, towards ensuring the camaraderie of not only the Youth of our Branch but all members. Created a Vision Statement -Maintain and increase Youth membership by working together across North Barrier Branch to develop leaders and have fun. Giving a solid vision for future committee and defining what we are all about. Attempting to mirror already existing committees – through electing a Deputy, Secretary &

Treasurer, the Youth Committee such ensured not only stability but that its member will have a pathway into understanding how committees generally run.

North Barrier Branch Annual Dinner – this was our first major task and it was most definitely a hit. We re-vamped everything from how the night runs, to MC’s, entertainment, travelling

together and even the Youth Ball. As a result of the success the Youth Committee has been tasked with the Dinner again.

Youth Committee Collects a swag of awards at Branch Dinner – for a group of young people who only formed such a small period of time. Members of the Youth Committee cleaned up at the Branch Awards night, the highlights being the BIG FOUR AWARDS taken out by Youth

Committee Members (Alex Finney U14 Lifesaver, Mary Parker U18 Lifesaver, Nicola Street 18-25 Lifesaver & Macey Ronald Fiona Clyde).

Our Success continues onto State Awards – Just showing how well the idea is working out of the Three Youth Committee members nominated for State Awards we came away with two, Alex Finney U14 Lifesaver & Mary Parker U18 Lifesaver. Youth Committee Supports School Surf Leagues – as a result of the Youth Committee

promoting the School Surf Leagues, the events showed their greatest numbers of participation to date.

Starting to develop in other areas – members of the youth committee began to accompany members of the Branch to assist with all things ranging from Training & Education, Carnival Organisation, Fundraising and even media opportunities.

    YOUTH COMMITTEE 2013/2014 CONTINUED

  • Having a say in development programs – the Youth Committee has become very involved in the Development of Branch members ensuring there is a planning for Branch Development Programs and events, including a plan to include North Queensland Branch

Running a successful development program – with the assistance of the Youth Committee, North Barrier Branch ran potentially one of its most popular programs to date at Camp Radical Magnetic Island.

Youth Committee well represented at State Levels – Where do we start here; following on from the success of their awards Mary Parker & Alex Finney were personally invited to attend Breaka Youth Excellence Program and be a part of the Open Forum, they were also joined by committee members Lachlan Parker, Danielle Soutar & Marion Jones, this program was also beneficial in re cruiting Tyler Williams as Bowen’s representative on the committee. Further through Jeremy Best continued his work with the Leadership Excellence Program as a coordinator, sprucing the Youth Committee left right and centre, resulting in other branches sitting down with him to explain his model.

Involved in assisting outside organisations and the community – although plans fell through, by showing interest in assisting another organisation the Youth Committee has added another

beneficial aspect to their portfolio Assisting Branch Clubs when in need – members of the Youth Committee assisted Bowen SLSC

with Patrolling in time of need and has shown a willingness to continue this if possible Becoming Self Sufficient – the youth committee has put plans in order to ensure they are a fully

self-funded entity within the Branch A welcoming committee that brings on all interested parties – throughout the year the Youth

Committee has been welcoming of all new members that wish to attend, with all taking on jobs and tasks as needed

Envy of other Branches – The North Barrier Branches Youth Committee’s success has reached the ears of other branches, with some even contacting our members to attempt to replicate, including becoming topic of the Open Forum at the recent State Youth Excellence Program

Becoming a well-respected, reliable, enthusiastic and inspiring group of young leaders – the Youth Committee have all become key members within the Branch and are often sought for advice or if tasks need to be done

Continuing to branch out beyond the expected – The members of the youth committee are continuing and striving to find area’s beyond the normal realm to assist their Surf Club and the branch, this includes but isn’t limited to; assistance across the branch in conducting courses and awards, assisting and running fundraising events, assisting in running of alternate development clinics (such as Surf Rescue and IRB). This also resulted in the Youth Committee played a pivotal role in the Lifesaver’s Memorial Day, including the Opening Speech and Guard of Honour.

    YOUTH COMMITTEE 2013/2014 CONTINUED

  • Youth Committee Members continue to do well in competition – We have to con-gratulate the great results that Youth Committee Members have made throughout the season, particularly at State Championships with Cody Roth, Marion Jones and Sally Watson all achieving medaling results. Youth Committee Members achieving community accolades – It also needs to b mentioned a number of the Youth Committee have achieved outside recognition of their leadership, integrity, courage and community qualities that we strive for in the committee. This has been recognized via anything from School Presidency to Com-munity Leadership and even entry into Youth Parliament.

The Youth Committee looks forward to working with everyone in the future and excited for some of our initiatives to take the forefront in the Branch and show that our Youth are truly a force to be reckoned with. We will continue to recognise, develop and invest our time into our future by working together with the North Barrier Executive and clubs. We would like to, thankyou for all of your support and let’s make 2014/15 the year of North Barrier Branch. Yours in Lifesaving, Mary Parker Youth Committee Chair 2013/2014

    YOUTH COMMITTEE 2013-2014 CONTINUED

  • The Junior year started with Junior Activities Forums (JAC Forums), held in Mackay on a Friday night and in Townsville on the next Saturday morning. Both forums were well attended by members of the branch. The forums were run by Ray Fien, Brenda Lofthouse and Rob Campbell. We were able to use their knowledge and ideas to help us out in our different clubs. We had a JAC phone hook up after the first State JAA panel meeting as we were given late notice of the panel meeting. We then proceeded try and have phone hook up meetings before each panel meeting so that if we had any issues we could take them direct to the state panel. It is important that these are attend-ed so we can pass on information between Branch and State, as well as make informed decisions on items that are upcoming State-wide. This season the Branch tried to have a separate under 11-14 selection carnival, but due to lack of a carnival referee this carnival was incorporated back into the Branch Champion-ships Carnival held in Bowen. Fortunately this gave all clubs more time to complete their age awards. Forrest beach and Sarina were chosen to trial a peaked nipper cap for SLSQ. The feedback from which is being collated at the moment to be decided by the JAA Panel if we are to rollout state-wide. Other branches throughout the state are looking at following the North Barrier Branch and introduc-ing modified events to surf rescue for the under 12 and 13 age groups. These under 12 and 13 nippers that competed at our branch surf rescue championships enjoyed themselves and tested their new skills out. This is also as we believe, an integral part of the Lifesaving Pathway, ensuring that Resusci-tation and Rescue Skills are taught. Australia Day saw a training day at Townsville Picnic Bay on the Strand which saw all of the nippers there mixed into different teams. State championships came around soon enough, with our branch nippers performing exceedingly well again coming home with swag of prizes. This was the signal for some clubs to finish their nipper season whilst other clubs went through until nearly Easter. In the upcoming season we will be looking at making U8-U10 competitions more participation based and bringing the emphasis back to basics. We are also looking at some small changes to the way Age Awards are rolled out. Also it looks like SLSA will trial a Youth Championships at Aussies, which could include U14’s & U15’s so there are definitely some exciting times ahead. Below is a quick snapshot of the season that has past. I look forward to working with Junior Activities throughout the coming season. Glen Miller

  • CAMP RADICAL 2014 After the success of 2011’s North Barrier Branch Youth Ex-perience on the Gold Coast and Camp Troppo in 2012, North Barrier Branch has been committed to providing a Development Program that not only teaches and excites our young members, but challenges them to reach beyond their perceived limits. The idea was to bring development programs back to basics with the added bonus of new ideas, essentially mixing the best of the old and new. This made Magnetic Island the ideal location for Camp Radical, with the ability to bunk old-club style, whilst encompassing the history of North Barrier Branch. This is essentially how the North Barrier Branch Camp Radical was born. The weekend of the 22nd – 23rd March 2014, saw 20 participants, 4 Junior Leaders, 2 Leaders and 2 Mentors from across all 8 North Barrier Branch clubs, descend upon Picnic Bay (on the iconic Magnetic Island) for what promised to be an action packed and fun filled weekend for all involved. The program was aimed at participants between the ages of 12 and 15 years with those older than 16years being assigned as Leaders/Mentors for the weekend.

The purpose of the program was to introduce the North Barrier Branch youth to the many development, leadership and career opportunities that are offered by Surf Life Saving Queensland. This was done in a way that fosters leadership, teamwork and mateship, by exposing the participants to situations in which they would not usually encounter, “taking them out of their comfort zone”. This left majority of the participants and even the leaders with a new outlook on how to approach the many dif-

ferent situations, which they may face in everyday club life. This will predominantly give the confidence to not only assist around the club, but become better Surf Life Savers through leadership and other career pathways they may choose to take. All attributes that will undoubtedly carry over to their personal and professional lives. The theme of North Barrier Branch Camp Radical, surrounds the location, emphasising the fact that every-thing we do is just plain “Radical”. The activities planned for the weekend were all planned to leave a lasting im-pression, under the notion that this program would be an experience no-one would ever forget. These were all ex-periences that you would only get as a member of Surf

Life Saving, with some of them even unique to the lifestyle and culture of North Barrier Branch and North Queensland.

  • The success of the Camp Radical was due to contribution by many people and would not have been possible without them. These people should be acknowledged for their efforts and involvement at any stage: Townsville Picnic Bay SLSC – thankyou for letting us stay at your clubhouse and use your facil-ities Sealink Ferry- thankyou for transport over to Magnetic Island.

North Barrier Branch Executive Committee and Councillors for your full support in getting this program off the ground encouraging it to be a success. North Barrier Branch Clubs – Each and every one supported by sending a member. The Leadership Team – Without your support, enthusiasm, dedication and knowledge this trip would not have been as successful as it was. North Barrier Branch Staff – You were always able to lend a hand where and if needed to get equipment ready, plans done, bills paid. The North Barrier Branch Camp Radical was an outstanding success, challenging participants not only mentally but physically and encouraging an outside my comfort zone attitude. Many have come away with new leadership and development skills and ideas, but more importantly a team mentality where you always look out for your mate, this was truly indicated through the fact that everyone got along and everyone promises to keep in contact for future dates and time to come. All participants, leaders and mentors in attendance over the weekend displayed such diverse qualities and personalities that truly prove a Surf Life Saving cap will fit anyone. It is extremely encouraging to witness the bonding and the mateship formed between all participants, eventuating in working to words one common goal, how can we move Surf Life Saving forward? Over the weekend we witnessed out-standing displays of leadership, teamwork, courage, commitment, camaraderie and resilience, all attributes that contribute to becoming the Best Lifesaver you can be. The hope out of the weekend is that every participant has taken something back to their club which will enrich their learning and enthusiasm towards not only their club, but also the branch and the organisation as a whole. The selected Leadership team were fantastic and went above and beyond the call of duty as role models for the younger Surf Life Savers; their key role in the overall success of the program was through providing support, guidance, direction and an overall facilitation of the teamwork principles. Definitely a team that will strive for big things in Surf Life Saving for years to come remember the names! The overall success of such programs is hard to depict in words and it is even harder to determine the

correct terminology. To say the least it well and truly exceeded expecta-tions, giving us the even harder task in years to come of improving and ever evolving the pro-gram to meet the new needs, a task I’m sure our leadership team will take by the horns.

    FIONA CLYDE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

On the 27 February 1996 Fiona Clyde lost her life in a tragic surfboat training accident at Harbour Beach Mackay. Fiona was a very dedicated member of the Mackay Surf Life Saving Club who was also a qualified lifeguard and worthy competitor in the North Barrier Branch. Fiona possessed such good character, personality, friendliness and devotion to Surf Life Saving that the North Barrier Branch, along with Fiona’s family considered it appropriate that a fund to be established to provide a scholarship to honour her memory. Michael and Joanna Clyde along with the North Barrier Branch and the Clubs within the Branch contributed the funds required to set up the Fiona Clyde Memorial Scholarship and the first scholarship was presented at the 1997 Annual Dinner and Presentation of Awards.

  • DIRECTOR OF SURF SPORTS 2013/2014 As the 2013-2014 seasons comes to a conclusion I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the past year as well as to thank the people who have assisted me this season. This season I put my hand up for the position of Director of Surf Sports of the North Barrier Branch. It has been a baptism by fire with the first carnival being the NBB Championships at Bowen. This season the NBB carnivals started with the Forrest Beach carni-val followed by the Nth Aussies. The first of the U11 –U14 State Selection Carnival & the U11 – Masters Teams Carnival “North Vs South” at Bowen was unfortunately was cancelled due to flooding. 4 weeks later we were back at Bowen for the NBB Championships which included the FMOS and the U11 –U14 State Selections. We then headed to Maggie Island and had the Surf Rescue Champs. The Pool Rescue Carnival was unfortunately cancelled not once by twice thanks to TC Dylan and TC Ita. I have been informed by those that have been around for quite a while that all of the above carnivals were not very well attended by our NBB members with varying excuses from all clubs as to the down turn in attendances. This downturn in attendances at our carnivals has meant that we are in need to revitalise the sport to compete with the large number of activities that are currently available to community members these days. At the commencement of the season I will organise a NBB Surf Sports Workshop for all clubs within the Branch to voice concerns and put forward ideas for the betterment of the Surf Sport of the North Barrier Branch, from these suggestions I will develop a plan for the NBB Surf Sports programme to improve our numbers and to and set KPI’s in order to achieve agreed goals. Only time will tell if our NBB Surf Sport Workshop outcomes and recommendations turn into fruition. The NBB branch IRB team will be competing in the Ocean Roar Series from May to July; the team will be 26 strong at the Queensland IRB Championships that will be held on the weekend of the 28-29 June at Townsville, so if you in the area come down and support your branch, and how knows you might get the IRB bug. I strongly believe that the Surf Sports component within our Branch is the corner stone to keeping surf lifesaving alive within our Branch, especially promoting the Surf Rescue as this the core business of Surf Life Saving and should be come as second nature. I need all members of all clubs to promote surf sports throughout the branch. I again congratulate all of our NBB members who competed at the Junior State Titles, Senior State Titles & the Australian Championships and accolades to those of you who won medals and met your season's goals. Well done. I would like to thank all the NBB club members, officials and supporters for your assistance in water safety, beach preparation, administration etc. I would especially like to thank my Surf Sports Commit-tee, the Branch Executive Committee, NBB Administrator Betty Sheret, and Sam Wheeler for their persistence in reminding me that I have forgotten to do something, also a big thank you to the SLSQ Regional Manager Jenny Neil and NBB Branch President George Clarke for their support and assistance throughout the season. I would like to make a special mention to Gillian Braddick for her knowledge and assistance at the carnivals as well as for her assistance in organising our official's courses, carnival paperwork prepara-tions and a whole lot more. I have no doubt forgotten to mention something or thank someone so please forgive me as I only have one page Yours in Lifesaving

  • SURF BOAT OFFICER 2013/2014 Navy-NBB Surf Boat Series The 4 beaches for boat events this season were Forrest Beach, Mackay, Bowen and The Strand. As with other senior surf sports disciplines, the surf boat arena was down on competitor numbers again this season. From a high of 22 crews in the Branch 3 seasons ago we are now down to 6. Townsville Picnic Bay crews were consistent in attendance and results, winning the overall series point-score. I applaud the ASRL-Qld who again supported rowing in our region this season by way of coaching / development clinics and travel subsidies for country based boaties. I would understand though if the ASRL-Qld decided that there isn’t sufficient return on investment to continue next season. I am aware that there are crews that are having a social row at their own beach but they aren’t committing to travel to competition (not sure how to address this issue). NBB Boat crews in SEQ The Townsville Picnic Bay club sent 2 crews to compete in Sth East Qld. Both crews made finals at Senior State Titles. The TPB Open Women Punches crew the first crew from TPB to make an open division state final placing 6th. The TPB Reserve Grade Cat Herders rowed well and dialled a nice wave in the final to pick up a Bronze Medal. Thanks again to the Branch Officials (Gage, Coomber, Burke, Heery) and the ASRL-Qld executive for your ongoing support. I will not be standing for the Surf Boat Officer position for the 2014-15 season and wish the incoming NBB surf sports committee all the best. Vic O’Keefe NBB Boat Officer ASRL-Qld Country Rep

  • IRB RACING OFFICER 2013/2014 This being my sixth season holding this non-voting position on the management committee for the Branch hasn’t seen a great deal of change in the area of IRB competition. Townsville Picnic Bay and Arcadian Surf Lifesaving Clubs continued to be the only clubs to enter the sport from the Northern Barrier. That was until Adam Dunn came to the area with work. Adam and his wife Fiona have done a great deal of work getting Mackay SLSC competition this season. And whilst the Mackay members are only new to the sport and have a journey ahead of them to be competitive, Adam and Fiona are veterans with many medals to their name. This can only stand Mackay well in nurturing the sport in the north. Mac-kay now have a small team of about 8-10 members who will gain invaluable ex-perience this season.

This season the State Surf Sports Committee has again allowed the clubs to combine and enter a North Barrier Branch team into IRB competition in the south east carnivals to try and grow the sport and have more teams attending. Townsville Picnic Bay, Arcadian, Mackay and Bowen clubs formed the team and have already gained noticeable attention from our southern competitors and counterparts at Round 3 of the Ocean Roar Premiership series by placing 9th out of the 20 clubs that attended Coolum Beach carnival. The team will have attended Rounds 2, 3 and 4 of the Ocean Roar

IRB Premiership series, State Championships and Australian Championships by the season end. Townsville Picnic Bay secured the State IRB Championships this season and look forward to hosting a great carnival in the North despite having no waves. The North Barrier Branch Team is looking forward to making some history at the State Championships in Townsville and are well placed to make this happen. Results to date include; Round 3 Ocean Roar IRB Premiership Series Masters IRB Rescue Tube Rescue 2nd Masters IRB Surf Rescue 3rd Open Male Tube Rescue 6th Equal 9th overall of 20 clubs being represented. IRB Competition was again held on the Friday of the North Australian Championships in Oct 2013. There was a good turnout of teams entered with Arcadian, Townsville Picnic Bay, and Tannum Sands all attending the carnival and having up to 6 crews on the starting line at times. Team numbers were increased this year on last and the quality of competition has also increased. This carnival is in doubt for the future and having the competition on the Friday doesn’t lend itself to exposure to other mem-bers of the association of this surf sport. Yours in Lifesaving Rob ‘Bear’ Shillam NBB IRB RACING OFFICER
