Form is the story of a design company and a designer with a vision of creating the perfect chair.

Since the initial idea, it has taken 3 years to develop the Form series. During the process, angles have been corrected, curves have been adjusted, colors have been tweaked and more than 20 prototypes with various angles and material thicknesses have been tested in order to find the right solutions and achieve the best comfort possible.

The end result is an uncompromising design, which blends craftsmanship with design history.

This catalogue offers a glimpse into the process leading to this ambitious furniture design. Subjects like the designer´s thoughts behind the concept, the design itself, as well as Normann Copenhagen´s uncompromising approach to the development of Form, are unfolded through text and inspirational images.

FORM – AN UNCOMPROMISING DESIGN

-06-

FORMING FORMForm is a new interpretation of the classic shell chair made of molded plastic. The Form chairs combine a strong design idiom with comfortable curves and an innovative industrial production technique. It is a fresh and sophisticated design with both familiar and new expressions. At the same time, the series is a tribute to form itself.

The name Form reflects the designer´s inspiration drawn from chair designs throughout history. With a soft silhouette that merges with a rigid, Nordic wooden frame, Form is Normann Copenhagen’s idea of the perfect chair.

The goal was to create a chair with a cohesive and unified look as well as a natural integration between seat and base.

Simon Legald has been ambitious in his design of Form and in this has challenged the traditional type of construction seen in a chair. The goal was to create a chair with a cohesive and unified look as well as a natural integration between seat and base. In order to achieve this, Normann Copenhagen has developed an innovative and sleek mounting solution consisting of 4 molded plastic connectors, which fit perfectly to the bottom of the shell. This almost makes it appear as though the legs are growing out of the seat.

A flexible and exclusive designThe chair comes with or without armrests and as a barstool in two different heights. Each chair consists of 25 individual pieces. The chairs are available with bases in solid oak, walnut or powder coated steel. The wooden legs add an artisanal exclusivity and warmth to the design, while the Form chair with steel legs has a more minimalistic and slender tone on tone look.

The aim was also to create a flexible design concept that could be adapted to countless types of bases, including those that will emerge in the future. The easiest and most common way to achieve this would have been to make several holes underneath the shell to fit the different bases. Normann Copenhagen, on the other hand, has raised the bar and prioritized exclusive and well-executed details. The connection principle developed especially for the Form chair makes it possible to mount different types of bases in the same holes. As a result, Form is a homogenous and aesthetic design, regardless which angle you look at the chair from.

Attention to detailsThe molded shell is based on well thought out curves, which follow the body and ensure optimal sitting comfort. For example, the seat is wider so as to accommodate various body types. It also gives you room to change your position, allowing you to sit comfortably for a longer period of time.

Another important detail is the varying thickness of the material. The 4 millimeters thin edge at the top of the backrest provides flexibility, while the bottom of the backrest and the seat are thicker in order to increase stability and support.

Finally, there is a small curve at the top of the backrest precisely where it feels most natural to grab the chair and pull it out from under the table.

Not just a colorEvery detail throughout the design process has been carefully deliberated, also when it comes to the 6 timeless colors. There is, for example, nothing random about the dusty blue with grey undertones or the light grey, with its gentle associations to minerals and cement. The green is a careful balance between forest and bottle green, while the deep red unites tones from the entire spectrum of summer berries. Even the black and white tones are chosen so they are clean and calm to look at. A great deal of effort has also gone into coloring the molded plastic connectors and the steel bases to match the shells perfectly.

CREATING FORM

From the very outset, Normann Copenhagen focused on creating a solution that would give the chair an integrated look. During the process Normann Copenhagen has faced many decisions and each time they have chosen not to compromise. Many hours of development were allocated in order to arrive at the end result. Multiple prototypes have been discarded and new tools for the production have been developed to achieve the high level of design and quality intended.

During the process Normann Copenhagen has faced many decisions and each time they have chosen not to compromise.

Industry meets craftsmanship The Form chair has a classic base with an exceptionally strong build. The legs are mounted in 4 molded plastic connectors. The base is available in lacquered steel or FSC certified American oak or walnut. The powder coating used for the steel legs also ensures a durable result. The parts for the wooden bases are treated with two coats of clear matt varnish before they are mounted onto the shell. This provides extra durability while also offering a beautiful, natural surface.

Highly qualified furniture craftsmen who make sure the quality is the best possible make the wooden bases. The bases are assembled and sanded by hand after they are cut. The steel legs are produced in thick and strong steel pipe. The base is welded together by hand, making the use of screws unnecessary and the construction more durable. The way the bases are made also makes the chairs very stable, thus improving the seating experience.

The Form shells are manufactured using the highest level of industrial expertise. This is clearly evident in the fine, matte and homogenous surface with minimal shrinkage marks. The shells are all created of high quality polypropylene and have been molded using one single injection, resulting in an extremely strong construction. It takes 2.8 kilos of polypropylene to manufacture the shell of the Form chair. For the armchair it amounts to 5 kilos and the barstool uses approximately 2 kilos.

As an additional detail, the shells go through an extra finishing phase. Before fitting the bottom of the chair with the logo, all visible traces of where the plastic has been injected into the mold are removed.

The Form chair has been tested and approved for domestic and public use by the Danish Technological Institute. All Form chairs are fitted with strong plastic gliders, which are well suited for most types of floors.

The idea was not only to design a chair but also to anticipate and implement all possibilities for future bases. As a natural extension, the series has been expanded with a dining table, which is the perfect companion for the Form chairs.

Together with the warm glow from the oak, the linoleum makes the Form table calm and harmonious to look at.

Despite their individual traits, the Form chairs, the Form barstools and the Form tables share the same design DNA. This is reflected, among other things, in the way the tabletop and legs are bound together using a specially developed principle similar to the one used for the chairs and barstools. This makes it possible to achieve a frame construction reminiscent of the bases of the chairs. The tabletop and its rounded edges also have clear references to the Form chairs. In addition, these features give the Form table its craftsmanship finesse.

A formidable tableThe quality materials and the rounded design language used for the Form table give it a sensuous and welcoming expression. The legs are mounted onto the tabletop using specially developed molded aluminum connectors in the same color as the tabletop. The curved edges and rounded corners

of the table soften the look, while the connectors work as an industrial contrast to the natural materials. Together with the warm glow from the oak, the linoleum makes the Form table calm and harmonious to look at.

The Form table is available in square and rectangular versions in 6 classic colors that fit perfectly with the well thought out palette of the Form chairs. Its resilient materials also make the Form table ideal for public environments where intensive use and hard wear can be experienced.

A natural surfaceThe Form table has a tabletop covered with linoleum and the edges, cross bars and legs are made of solid, FSC certified, American oak. Linoleum is a durable material, which is easy to maintain. It is also resistant to scratches. Linoleum is made of a combination of linseed oil, resin, limestone, saw dust and natural pigments and is known to be a highly functional material with antibacterial properties. Furthermore, it is very comfortable to the touch and has a beautiful matte finish.

Made to lastHighly qualified furniture craftsmen make the wooden frames. The craftsmen sand the legs and cross bars by hand and varnish them twice after they have been cut. After this, the parts are assembled using the molded aluminum connectors. The tabletop is made using medium-density fireboard (MDF). Solid oak profiles are glued on to create the curved edges of the table. A layer of laminate is then used to cover the tabletop in order to increase its strength and ensure an even surface, so it doesn’t begin to bulge over a long period of time. Finally, the table is finished with a layer of linoleum cut by hand for an exact fit.

Normann Copenhagen’s ambition is to be able to provide high quality designs and pieces of furniture for the entire home. Normann Copenhagen is known for a willingness to take risks and try something new. The founders of the company, Jan Andersen and Poul Madsen, constantly strive to do things better, to challenge themselves creatively and to explore new areas within the world of design.

”I had an idea of what the ideal chair should look like and I have had this for many years.”

- Simon Legald

A young design talent The Danish designer Simon Legald (b. 1986) graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2012. During his studies he completed an internship at Normann Copenhagen. Jan Andersen and Poul Madsen quickly noticed Simon Legald´s talent. In spite of his young age, Simon Legald has already been proclaimed as a design talent and has received several awards for his designs.

Today, Simon Legald works as a Senior Designer in Normann Copenhagen’s internal design studio. Here he has been given the opportunity to work with many different materials and on many projects, giving the young designer extensive experience within a short period of time.

“From the beginning, Normann Copenhagen and I have had a common understanding and we have had a similar idea of

what we would like to achieve. As an internal designer, I have had the chance to be closely involved in the development and production of a product. It is a privilege to be able to work on a lot of projects. I not only draw up new designs but am also involved in all stages of making a product. In this way we can address the issues that need to be addressed immediately. Ultimately, this creates better dialogue between designer, manufacturer and production team, resulting in design products of a higher quality,” says Simon Legald.

His work consists of both small and large-scale products, often created in the cross field between craftsmanship and industry. This fits well with Normann Copenhagen´s design strategy.

Simon Legald likes to use the necessary manufacturing tech-niques for his designs as part of their expression. He does this by highlighting them visually as opposed to concealing them. This is clearly evident in the transition between the legs and the seat when looking at the Form chair, for example.

A tribute to formForm holds a special place in the designer´s heart. The Form concept was Simon Legald’s graduation project, and the project earned him top marks. If you ask Simon Legald about the design concept of Form he explains:

”I had an idea of what the ideal chair should look like and I have had this for many years. I wanted to unite the frame and the seat in a way I had never seen before. I have analyzed hundreds of chairs from different periods during the design process. To me, form is the essence of design. Form is what makes a product recognizable and sets the design apart from other products. Form is the first thing you see, you then experience the function. Form is also where a designer can put his personal stamp on a piece of furniture or a product.”
