GUIDE

These papers reflect Norman S. Hayner 1 s (1896-1977) teaching career in sociology at the University of Washington beginning in 1925 until his retirement in .1968, and his service as a member ( 1951-55) and chairman (1955-56) of the Washington Prison Terms and Parole Board. Also included are items related to his family 1 s missionary experiences in China (1891-1901) and Hayner•s student days, beginning in 1913, continuing through his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 1922. In addition, these papers reflect Hayner 1 s involvement with the Pacific Northwest Conference on Family Relations (1939-48), the Travelers Aid Society of Seattle (1928-74), the Washington Mental Health and Retardation Advisory Council (1968), the Washington Association for Social Welfare (1953-60), and the Washington Temperance Association (1952-71) among others, including various professional organizations.

Arrangement Notes

Hayner liked to gather topically related materials, including correspondence, into subject files. Consequently, the initial General Correspondence series represents only a sample of his correspondents; not even all major corre-spondents are named here. Other major correspondence series may be found in the Corrections and Criminology, Family, Juvenile Delinquency, Penology, Prison, and Probation and Parole subject files as well as in the Washington Prison Terms and Parole Board and W.U. Sociology Department subgroups. The user is advised to always check the subject files for additional correspondence.

Subject series are concentrated in two places: in the main body and in the Parole Board subgroup. The Parole Board files in some cases parallel those in the main body, but are generally confined to the years, 1951-56. Topics of interest to Hayner during those years (such as his trip to Germany, 1954) will be better represented in the Parole Board files than in the main body. Neither set of files is chronologically exclusive, however. The Notes and Drafts, Student Papers, and Sociology Department Subject Files and Course Materials series function as secondary subject series.

By and large Hayner 1 s own file folder headings have been maintained and his filing siheme reconstructed as best as possible. Synonyms and quasi-synonyms were handled on a case-by-case basis. For example, 11 Germany11 and 11West Germany11 have been merged into one file, while 11 Corrections and Criminology11

and 11 Penology11 have been retained as separate files. Indirect access (i.e., 11Marriage11 filed under 11 Family'') was commonly, but not exclusively (e.g., both 11 Housing 11 and 11War Housing 11 files exist) employed by Hayner. Seemingly different file headings may contain similar materials: both the 11 Family and Marriage Customs11 and the 11 Race Contacts 11 files contain student papers on Japanese immigrant acculturation. It is best to look through all the headings when searching for a particular topic.

Hayner was in the habit of moving materials from file to file. Most notably, pages from his Parole Board Journal appear among his course and writings notes, as well as in selected subject files. No attempt was made to restore these items to the Journal.
