The Business Case
Business in the Community www.bitc.org.uk
A Critical Business Issue
• Mental health costs the UK £70bn per year, equivalent to
4.5% of GDP
• Mental ill-health costs each employer £1,035 per
employee, per year
• 15.2 million sick days per year due to stress, anxiety or
depression
• Failure to unlock discretionary effort costs UK business
£6bn
• Only 2 in 5 employees working at peak performance
Business in the Community www.bitc.org.uk
The Moral Case
Fewer than half of those people who are affected by mental
ill-health feel confident to speak up about their condition,
fearing a negative response
Business in the Community www.bitc.org.uk
Business Action on Public Health
Background…
• Business Action on Public Health (BAOPH) for the last 3 years. A
Department of Health funded project, which closed formally on the
31st of March 2015. It has been successful in engaging and
supporting businesses in delivering employee wellbeing interventions.
Over 450 companies have received support to date.
• Established out of the good practice above, Hertfordshire County
Council Public Health directorate funded BITC for the last 18 months
(September 2013 – June 2015 new contract pending) to deliver an
Employer Wellbeing at Work Offer. This has exceeded targets to
date with 56 organisations engaged and supported, 650 employees
trained in mental health, 250 Workplace Health Champions and an
Employer Ambassador Group established to promote the work.

Some of the learning from Mental Health training in Hertfordshire
• Poor mental health is affecting ALL organisations
• Organisations have different needs and are at different stages,Irrespective of size or sector.
• Training to date has been positively received and has started to make a difference
• Evaluation has captured real development e.g. more openness and willingness to talk, line managers feeling better equipped to manage situations, ability to incorporate mental health into physical health reviews and return to work interviews, greater tolerance within workforces and ultimately a reduction in stress related sickness absence.
Jo Dray Mental Health Promotion Training & Consultancy

What is the Mental Health Challenge?
Let’s talk
How do we develop a more positive culture in our organisations? How do we encourage people to talk and do we feel equipped to respond appropriately or manage positively? What are the challenges?
How do we build resilience?
What do our staff need? What do we need? How can we influence others? What are our strengths and weaknesses?
Planning a way forward……

Mental Health
• Five million people of working age have a common mental health disorder and just under a million a severe condition
• Mental health conditions are often undiagnosed, or diagnosed only when they have become severe enough that an individual may have to be absent from work for a substantial period
• Fear of stigma and discrimination, reluctant to ask for time off for therapies
• Line managers are often ill-equipped to recognise early signs of mental illness
Work can have a big impact on reducing health inequalities
