Norfolk’s relaxing beach communities of Ocean View and East Beach will leave you feeling as though you’re in a whole other world—one filled with fresh seafood, sand and seaside fun.

historyThe area’s unique history dates back hundreds of years and is full of interesting discoveries. Ocean View’s Willoughby Spit, an independent peninsula originally inhabited by The Willoughby Family, has been a favorite Norfolk marvel since it first appeared as a result of a mid-1600’s hurricane. Where there once had been only water now lies a serene strip of land created by Mother Nature. Past times at the beaches, neighborhoods and commercial districts of Ocean View are lovingly preserved and shared in collections of memorabilia, images and oral histories at the Ocean View Station Museum.

diNiNGAfter a day at the beach, take advantage of Ocean View’s dining hot spots. Stop in to Jesse’s Taqueria for some fresh, homemade and authentic Mexican food. If you’re craving something from the sea, Shipwreck Sally’s offers delectable

seafood dishes for breakfast or lunch. Dine at Razzo, a simple, warm locale that offers Italian dishes such as lasagna and veal marsala.

eNtertAiNmeNtThere’s no better way to enjoy the neighborhood than a day at the beach! This area is home to several city beaches on the Chesapeake Bay. The City of Norfolk maintains three beach parks including the Community Beach Park, Sarah Constant Beach Park and Ocean View Beach Park. Grab the family or your friends and head out for a relaxing afternoon of sunbathing and swimming! Enjoy fishing on the Ocean View Fishing Pier and if you’re hungry, grab a bite to eat at the pier’s onsite restaurant, known for its super fresh seafood. Or if you’d prefer to stay on land, schedule a round of golf at the Ocean View Golf Course located one block from the Chesapeake Bay and marina.

its studios, galleries and up and down the streets of downtown, the NEON Arts District and beyond. Throughout the city, almost everywhere you turn you’re bound to stumble upon artwork – from classically beautiful statues

to thought-provoking, abstract mixed-media installations. Downtown Norfolk and surrounding neighborhoods give proof to Norfolk’s flourishing arts scene. It is with good reason Norfolk is called the Cultural Capital of Virginia.

While touring Norfolk, keep an eye out for purposefully placed public art pieces ranging in media, location, theme, scale and style. The robust Norfolk Public Art Program strategically places artwork in areas with the most visible impact, such as downtown parking garages. Artist John Rudel’s artwork Eyes peer out from the MacArthur

Dance under the night sky with the interactive MetalMatisse by artist Electroland, a 30-foot-tall bouquet of stainless steel flowers that sings and flashes color to movement of passersby at the MacArthur Square light rail station. Travel into Norfolk’s neighborhoods to experience art like Matthew Gray Palmer’s All Things Within All Things, a life-size aluminum African elephant made of thousands of filigree butterflies at the Virginia Zoo. Be sure to venture down Granby Street into Norfolk’s recently dedicated NEON Arts District. You won’t have to look very hard to find a neighborhood transformed by over 15 new street murals and many unexpected art experiences. Find a friend and peer through both sides of Cementiscope, a larger than life-sized kaleidoscope in a fabricated cement mixer, by Glassitorium.

A hands-on history experience awaits visitors at two Williamsburg area museums that explore the nation’s beginnings. At Jamestown Settlement, gallery exhibits chronicle 1600s Virginia in the context of its Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures, complementing historical interpretation at outdoor re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, the three ships that brought America’s first permanent English colonists in 1607, and colonial fort. The story of the American Revolution, from the beginnings of colonial unrest to the formation of the new nation, unfolds at the Yorktown Victory Center through indoor exhibits and outdoor re-creations of a Continental Army encampment and Revolution-period farm. The museums are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Christmas and New Year’s days. For more information call 888-593-4682 or visit www.historyisfun.org.

it began as a dream: to gather the world’s best artists and share their gifts with the people of Norfolk and surrounding areas. Since 1997, the Virginia Arts Festival has

brought hundreds of artists to Norfolk’s concert halls and theaters, clubs and churches, and parks and schools. And this year, to celebrate their 20th anniversary, the Festival has created a spectacular anniversary season.

Beloved for its great musical performances, the Festival has also become a force in the world of dance, an art that is superbly represented this year. The Festival opens with a Dance Celebration that showcases the brightest and best of the dance world, in performances that dazzle the eye and lift the soul. Dancers from American Ballet Theatre, Britain’s Birmingham Royal Ballet, Mark Morris Dance Group, Richmond Ballet, and more will perform April 9 and 10 in Norfolk’s Chrysler Hall. Flanking that gala performance will be appearances by two of the greatest American dance companies: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, hailed as “the most bravura dancers on the planet” (Chicago Sun-Times), performs February 26-28; and the legendary Dance Theatre of Harlem returns with the world premiere of a new work commissioned by the Virginia Arts Festival, May 13-16.

Among the great music performances in this year’s Festival is a concert sure to be starred on every classical music lover’s calendar, when 18-time Grammy Award-winning cellist Yo Yo Ma and the great virtuoso pianist Emanuel Ax perform together April 12. The Festival’s chamber music offerings, unmatched in this or any other

area, round out a season of great music; see the Festival web site at vafest.org for details.

Theater lovers have reasons to celebrate in the 2016 Festival as well. Joining a worldwide celebration of Shakespeare, in the 400th anniversary year of the Bard’s death, the Virginia Arts Festival will join together the Virginia Stage Company and the Virginia Symphony and Chorus for a spectacular new staging of The Tempest, with the full orchestra and chorus performing music composed by Jean Sibelius, conducted by JoAnn Falletta. This fully staged production will be performed April 16-17 at Chrysler Hall.

Also celebrating its 20th anniversary is the Virginia International Tattoo, which has brought tens of thousands of people to Norfolk from around the world over the years. Named the top U.S. event of North America’s 100 Best Events for 2016 by the American Bus Association, the Tattoo is an awe-inspiring spectacle of music and might, featuring pipers, drummers, drill teams, and performers from throughout the United States and across the globe, April 21-24.

And in case all that great entertainment, inspiring performances, and sheer beauty makes you thirsty, the Virginia Arts Festival is a proud copresenter (with FestEvents) of the Virginia Beer Festival, May 21-22. Top off your Festival fun with a frosty mug or foaming stein of brews from around the world!

virginia arts Festival2016YEARS
