ADD TRACKS WITHIN THE TERMINAL: We plan to upgrade & extend an existing track and build 2 new tracks to handle greater quantities of rail cars in the terminal. The TBT facility improve-ments are designed to accommodate 70 rail cars within a spill containment area. This will result in less switching and reduced overall noise.
INSTALL NEW ETHANOL TRANSFER SYSTEM: Ethanol will be directly transferred from rail cars to a new collection pipe system that will be installed along 3 tracks. This system will replace the mobile pump carts and reduce the potential for human error and material release. The upgrade includes increasing the transloading spill containment area.
BUILD SEPARATE TRUCK LOADING AREA: We are consolidating truck transfer operations at a new 3-bay truck rack closer to the facility entrance, which is enclosed overhead and on two sides, reducing the visual impact of operations.
Norfolk Southern is upgrading itsAlexandria Thoroughbred BulkTransfer (TBT) terminal in responseto increased demand for ethanoland to enhance train operations. The improvements will havesignificant benefits for residentsliving near the facility, including:
fewer daily trains | less noise | enhanced safety NS transports ethanol for the Northern Virginia fuel market in 80-car unit trains. But only 19 cars at one time can be delivered to the TBT due to limited track capacity for transloading. Trains must go 2 miles past the facility to the railroad’s Seminary Yard to set off the additional cars and shuttle cars to the facility in four or more separate trains.
To enable trains to be delivered more efficiently to the TBT, NS is investing in 3 improvements:
1 We plan to construct additional tracks within the terminal; build a new ethanol transfer and delivery system and construct a separate truck loading area.
2 Construction has started, and we expect the improvements to be completed in late 2016.
3 Norfolk Southern takes seriously its commitment to safely ship ethanol. We are confident that these improvements will add another layer of safety to operations and reduce train switching frequency. As a result, nearby residents will benefit.
