By Dave ScottThe weather was perfect Sunday, November 11th, a slight breeze, warm sun shining down and the crowd at the Carillon Tower in Simcoe
was one of the largest I have seen in a while… it made me proud to see so many folks attending the Remembrance Day Ceremony. Our veterans deserve the best and a show of support like I saw on Sunday goes a long way to expressing our thanks to those that serve today
and those who have served in the past to keep our country strong and free.As the ceremony ended, my daughter was able to catch a photo of a couple of WWII vets, Ike Hewitt and Ken Keegan sharing a moment… true gentlemen!

By Dave ScottMike’s nofrills has been running for three years in Port Dover now. Up until last week, I still had not met the owners of the business, Mike and Chris Ramirez, but all that changed when Kelly Fulsom from Port Dover KIA gave me a call. He asked if I would be interested in doing a story on the toy drive that KIA and Mike’s nofrills were doing for the local Dover children… to make sure there is something under the tree for everyone. So I headed down to Mike’s nofrills on Wednesday morning, where I met Mike and his wife, Chris.Chris explained that she, Mike and their bookkeeper, Andrea Hoyle,
had been talking about doing something for the community this Christmas and when Kelly approached them with the toy drive idea it was a perfect fit. These two local businesses always make an effort to support their local community.Chris and Mike have three young children of their own, and seeing the smiles on their faces Christmas morning was something they wanted to make sure that all the kids in the Dover area would have. Kelly echoed their sentiments, saying that as a dad with a little girl, watching her eyes light up and her excitement of what Santa has brought her is as important
as it gets, and making sure other families share that experience is his goal.If you would like to help out, drop off a toy at either location. Port Dover KIA is located at 167 Hamilton
Plank Road East, or Mike’s nofrills at 87 Thompson Drive. There is a KIA Soul sitting out at Port Dover KIA and one at Mike’s nofrills... waiting for you to stop by with a donation for our local toy drive.

By Dave ScottI was up visiting the boys at KIA and apparently Kelly Fulsom, Greg Johnston, and Jack Lavery are attempting to grow moustaches for Movember. The boys are
trying to raise money for a great cause… ‘During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in Canada and around the world. With their “Mo’s”, these men raise vital funds and awareness for
men's health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives.’ (Taken from the website, ca.movember.com)I know it is early in the month, but please stop by and make a donation so that at the end of the month these three facial-hair-challenged
fellas can get back to normal. I give these guys credit for trying… who knows there is still a few weeks left… maybe by then they will look great! Oh, who am I kidding? Just stop by Port Dover KIA and make a donation… and don’t laugh!!
Please shave
Left to right: Greg Johnston, Kelly Fulsom and Jack Lavery in support of Movember, raising funds and awareness for the fight against prostate cancer. Great work guys!!

ten yeaRs of fitness
By Dave ScottAron Suprun’s life changed one day back in 1998. He had finished school with a degree in Environmental Science, and he was out in Jasper doing some mountain biking. Life was good, he was outdoors doing what he loved to do… and in a split second, all of that changed. In a life altering moment, the chain on his bike snapped, his handlebars on his bike turned in, and the force of the torque, literally threw his stomach against the handlebars, puncturing his small intestine. There was no outward piercing but inside the damage had been done.Aron finally left the hospital three months later. His weight at one point was down to 125 pounds. Physically, the young man was a shell of himself. Scars left from the surgeries are constant reminders of the accident. It was a tough five months with a colostomy bag at his side, but Aron learned a lot about himself. He began to recognize that perhaps there was something else in life that he wanted to do… help folks through tough times!During his recovery and rehab in the hospital, his doctor asked if he would speak to other patients, to help motivate them with their rehab. Aron became involved and did just that. He began to understand and see the rewards in helping others rebuild their lives.I guess if you don’t know who Aron is, you are probably wondering why I am telling you his story… well Aron along with his brother, Dr. Shawn
Suprun, own the Port Dover Health and Fitness Centre and they will be celebrating ten years in business on December 2nd.The fitness centre, located on Market Street, expanded in 2006 from its original one room (3000 square feet) to over 8000 square feet. His brother, Dr. Shawn Suprun, also brought his chiropractic business to the same location that year, building his own facility right next door. It was an excellent opportunity for the two brothers to work together, helping folks with their health, fitness and rehab. Aron tells me that over the years, he’s seen a steady growth within the fitness centre, in clients, equipment and programs. Speaking of the programs, there is a nice diversity for folks such as: body sculpting, ball strength training, kickboxing, spin, pilates, tabata, or if you like to do your own thing, just get a gym membership and use the equipment to fit your personal program. When I stopped by and had a visit with Aron at his gym, there was that welcome, easy feel to it… open for everyone. Aron tells me that for him, helping people dedicate themselves to better health is something he enjoys… Stop by Sunday, December 2nd for Port Dover Health and Fitness Centre’s Customer Appreciation Day Open House between 11 am and 2 pm. By MARG WERDEN A new bird for our home listAfter living here in Port Ryerse for the last ten years, finding a bird on the property that I hadn’t seen here before is becoming quite rare. However, last week, just after Hurricane Sandy had blown through, I had several Evening Grosbeaks visiting. I also saw a flock of about 25 of them at my mother’s place on Radical Road. These large and brightly coloured members of the Finch family are very noticeable when they visit feeders. If a flock settles down to eat, the feeder can be cleaned out in a very short time. Males have brownish-black heads with a black crown, yellow forehead and eye-stripe, and a dark brown nape fading to yellow on its back. The tail is black and the wings are black and white. The dark brown throat fades to a brownish-yellow chest and a bright yellow belly. The legs are pink and the heavy conical bill is a pale greenish yellow. This powerful bill allows it to crack very large seeds, such as cherry pits. Females have a more
drab appearance being mostly grayish brown. Evening Grosbeaks are irruptive migrants, meaning their migration is irregular and often in response to food availability. Usually found year-round further north in the boreal forests, Evening Grosbeaks will migrate south if necessary. This year’s supply of coniferous and hardwood tree seeds is low so this may be the reason we are seeing this species in our area this year. Evening Grosbeaks also eat the larvae of the spruce budworm and feed them to their young. As the budworm outbreaks have decreased, so has the population of the Evening Grosbeak. In some parts of the continent, changes in the population of Evening Grosbeaks have been well documented. In the province of Quebec, this species was unknown, even as a winter visitor, until the late 1800s. It wasn’t until the 1940s that an Evening Grosbeak was found nesting in the province. It is believed that the gradual expansion of the Grosbeak’s range from western to eastern North America is a result of the planting of box elder (Manitoba maple) trees, a tree related to maples and a favourite winter food of this species. The advent of spruce budworm in the east may have also enticed these birds to expand their range eastward.

These words are the answer that many seniors give when
asked, “What would you like for
Christmas?” They often add, “Don’t waste your money on me.” There are those with a mischievous grin who will say, “How much money do you have?” None of these responses answer the question nor are they very helpful. The person asking the question really would like some suggestions, as they really want to give the senior something that the senior would like to have.Thinking about the senior’s answer, it was both spontaneous and true and also influenced by what the senior knows about this kind person who wants to give them a gift. This person may have a home mortgage, medical bills, children who are active in sports and the senior knows from experience how fast these young people outgrow their equipment and the cost that this involves and this list can go on and on and on.Something else for the senior to consider is the setting where everyone has gathered to open the presents and the senior has none to open. It would not be
much fun to just sit and watch the others enjoying themselves!! So, back to the question, “What would you like for Christmas?”Take a piece of paper and put the following three headings on it:NEEDShower matLarge bath towelOven mittsWOULD LIKELarge coffee mugsApron with a bibFoot cushion for the car
WOULD REALLY LIKENew car, fridge with ice cube maker!!Reading lampNew dog bedPlace this list where it is convenient to add to and also where others can see it; the fridge door or a bulletin board are both good places. This list can also be very easy to e-mail and would be really appreciated! So seniors should not hesitate to give some suggestions when asked, “What would you like for Christmas?”
Now, for the music of the season, match the title with the lyrics.TITLE 1. White Christmas2. Joy To The World3. Twelve Days of Christmas4. The First Noel5. Away In A Manger
LYRICSa. Let every heart declare…b. The cattle are lowing…c. May your days be merry and bright…d. The angels did say…e. Two turtledoves and a partridge…
And from a well-known ‘recitation’ of the season - name the missing reindeer… Dasher and ______, Comet and ______, Donner and ______, Prancer and ______.
This month I decided to talk about some common questions/
myths/issues that come up with CPAP therapy. Q: I have experienced a significant weight change; will this have an effect my CPAP?A: Yes. A significant change in weight, up or down, can seriously affect your required CPAP pressure. If your weight change is a decrease, it will likely not ‘cure’ your sleep apnea; however, it may significantly decrease your required pressure. Likewise, a significant weight increase may render your current pressure ineffective. Q: I wear my CPAP mask, all night and I’m still snoring, why?A: There are 2 possible reasons for this. The first possibility is that you are experiencing a mouth leak and thus you are not getting the full benefit of your CPAP, which will allow you to snore again. The first thing to do to resolve this is to look at adjusting or changing your

ResPiRatoRy health mask. If you are using a nasal mask,
switching to a full face mask will often resolve this. If you are using a full mask it may be leaking or no long fitting properly. The best thing to do is visit a CPAP vendor and discuss your mask options and fit. The second possible reason for your snoring is that your CPAP pressure is no longer accurate for your needs. Your CPAP vendor can assist you with this by discussing your CPAP settings with your sleep lab. Whatever the cause of this, visit a CPAP vendor and they will help you resolve it.Q: I am going to have surgery; do I need to tell the hospital about my Sleep Apnea?A: Yes. Any time you go for medical treatment/surgery at the hospital is important that you inform the hospital that you have sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine. You should also bring your CPAP machine with you if you are admitted to the hospital overnight. This way you can wear it and have proper sleep while you are in the hospital. If you are having surgery it is important to bring your CPAP with you as the hospital staff will put it on you while you are in recovery. This is very important because while the anesthesia is wearing off, you are in and out of being awake and may have apnea events if you are not wearing your CPAP.

Many of my readers have been thrust into caregiving roles with little preparation
due to a sudden downturn in the health of a loved one. Navigating the hospital system is difficult; here is a tip to make the journey a bit easier. If there is a perceived problem with care of a loved one, speak up and talk directly to the nurse delivering the care. If you are unsuccessful in solving the problem, there is a chain of command to voice your concerns. If you’re not getting what you want from the nurse, talk to the charge nurse, who oversees the floor for that day, then the nurse manager, who manages the floor. And then there’s the nursing supervisor, who manages the hospital on that particular day.On the opposite side of the story is the caregiver being too demanding. Mary is a nurse in a long
term care facility, when asked what drives her crazy about caregivers, “It’s the worst when they say, “Can we have butter for my father?” And you go to the kitchen and you get the butter and then you come back and they say, “Can you get him cranberry juice too?” I go, “Really? I was just in the kitchen where the butter came from.” So here’s a tip: If you’re going to ask a nurse for a variety of things, ask for them all at once so she doesn’t have to make several trips and build up resentment toward you. Another issue Mary relates, “Some of the wives are a little much. I’ll be talking to their husband, and they’ll answer every question.” Maybe it’s their way of feeling useful. But the husband doesn’t always want them there. He may want a break. That’s something for caregivers to really understand -– that the patient sometimes needs to be left alone. I don’t know how many times patients have whispered to me, “Can you please just tell them to leave for awhile? Make them go to dinner? It’s important to have people call and visit, but it’s also important for the patients to have quiet time. I have worked in the health care field for 30 years and have always felt that the Golden Rule applies in these situations; “Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself”. Hospitals and long-term care facilities can be frightening and confusing places. Speaking up, being polite and trying to be patient and compassionate go a long way for both health care workers and the patients and caregivers
that utilize these services. On the lighter side, Victoria Eldercare has recently become the sponsor of Humpty Dumpty at the Simcoe Panorama display in Wellington Park. I spent the weekend on a ladder re-painting the display, sprucing it up for the December 1st light up. I have attached a picture of the new and improved Humpty. I thought Victoria Eldercare was a good fit with Humpty Dumpty since we are in the business of elder safety: preventing slips and falls… think about it… I know it’s a groaner, but it’s the best I’ve got.

Norfolk General Hospital has won the 2012 Green Health Care Overall Leadership Award as presented by the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) and the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care. The award was given during the Green Health Care session at the HealthAchieve 2012 Convention at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Monday, November 5, 2012.“It was very exciting to learn that we had been selected as the winners. This is truly a corporate award that all staff can be proud of,” said Joanne Kiefer, director of nutrition, foodservices and housekeeping at NGH. “While certain individuals may be responsible for initiating green programs, without the staff participation in these programs (e.g. recycling, energy conservation, travel mug program) we would not be successful.” The award recognizes leadership and excellence in reducing health care’s environmental impact. “Congratulations on demonstrating a significant organizational commitment to environmental sustainability and to reducing environmental impact, including evidence of progress in energy efficiency, pollution prevention, waste management and involvement with the community,” said Amanda Nilsson of the Ontario Hospital Association.Over the past year, NGH has re-energized our waste minimization program; implemented several initiatives to reduce water and energy
consumption; participated in a local foods initiative; and has hosted a green health care workshop for south-central and south western Ontario health care organizations.“NGH is a principal employer in our community
and we want to demonstrate leadership in the area of green. Incorporating green into health care shows that we are committed to a healthier, sustainable environment and the protection of our staff, patients and visitors. It is a win win situation for all,” said Kiefer.

Leonid meteor shower this FridayIf the sky is clear this Friday evening/Saturday morning, it will be a great time to get out and see a meteor shower as there will also be no moon to speak of. At the peak of the Leonid meteor shower, observers should be able to see about two dozen meteors per hour lighting up the sky.The Leonid meteor shower, which is an annual event in mid-November, is so called because the meteors seem to come from the constellation Leo, the Lion, which in the Northern Hemisphere rises around midnight
at this time of year and by 3 a.m. is high in the eastern sky.Like most meteor showers, this one is caused by Earth travelling through a comet’s dust trail. In this case, the comet is named Tempel-Tuttle and completes a circuit of the sun very 33 years. As the comet gets close to the sun, melting ice releases pieces of dust, most of which are no larger than a piece of sand. During a meteor shower, Earth is like a car speeding through a cloud of insects on the freeway: The windshield side of the car slams into the insects, leaving streaks on the glass that you can see. Some years, the Leonids produce meteor storms that can include as
many as a few hundred so-called shooting stars an hour during the peak. The last big Leonid storm occurred in 2002, with 3,000 meteors falling every hour at the height of the action. But the granddaddy of all meteor storms—and the root of Leonids' mythical status among generations of sky-watchers—was the 1833 storm, when as many as a hundred thousand shooting stars occurred in one hour.Unfortunately, since it’s been about ten years since the last big Leonid meteor storm, we probably won’t see another one for about two decades when the comet once again approaches the sun. However, it’s amazing to think that these pieces
of dust may be specks of material left over from the formation of the solar system that were captured by the comet. They are often 4.5 billion years old and we can see them vaporize in a flash as they pass through out atmosphere!
