Pet Health & Nutrition OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS DEFINED Sally Perea, D.V.M., M.S., Dipl. ACVN

Omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are important fatty acids for humans and their dog and cat companions because they cannot be made in the body . The only source of EPA and DHA for these species is through the diet and/or supplementation . Daily supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids helps support optimal pet health .

EPA and DHA are necessary structural components of cell membranes . These functional, health-promoting fatty acids maintain the cell membrane fluidity and permeability needed for healthy, functioning cells .

The two health-promoting omega-3 fatty acids are EPA and DHA . EPA and DHA are long-chain omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish . Flax seed oil contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a shorter chain omega-3 fatty acid that requires the enzyme delta-6 desaturase to convert it to EPA and DHA in the body .

Humans and dogs have limited ability to convert ALA to EPA and DHA .1 Cats have even less ability to convert ALA to EPA and DHA .2 Therefore, supplementation with high-quality omega-3 fish oil is recommended for humans, dogs, and cats .

In the wild, the canine species is an “opportunistic carnivore,” primarily consuming animal prey when available . When animal prey is scarce, wild canines feed on vegetation to support their nutrition . In comparison, the feline species is an “obligate carnivore,” relying solely on animal food sources for their nutrition . In nature, both wild canines and felines achieve a balanced diet, which includes the important health-promoting omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA .

Domesticated pet companions depend on us to provide them with a nutritious, balanced diet to ensure optimal health throughout all three life stages: growth, reproductive, and adult, which includes senior dogs and cats .

Commercial pet foods—whether dry, canned, or raw—typically contain higher amounts of omega-6 fatty acids (from meat products and vegetable oils) and inadequate amounts of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA from fish oil) . For optimal pet health, it is important to achieve a more balanced ratio of dietary omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the pet’s total diet . For this reason, supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids is recommended to achieve the correct omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid balance in the body of the dog and cat .

It is important to consider the source (fish derived vs . plant derived) and the individual amounts of EPA and DHA in the total diet since each fatty acid performs a distinct, yet mutually supportive role in promoting overall pet health . Fish oil provides dogs and cats with a direct source of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA . Pet owners should supplement their pet’s food with high-quality fish oil from wild, sustainably sourced fish .

Norwegian Classic PET COD LIVER OIL—(8 and 16 fluid ounces)

Traditionally, Norwegians have used cod liver oil for its nourishing and healthful benefits . Our Pet Cod Liver Oil products continue this heritage by providing pet companions with an ideal source of the important omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, as well as naturally occurring vitamin A .

Our Pet Cod Liver Oil is derived exclusively from wild Arctic cod (Skrei) from the Norwegian Sea surrounding the Lofoten Islands near Bodø, Norway . Arctic cod has the highest DHA content of any cod species . There is a natural variance of vitamin A in our Pet Cod Liver oil due to seasonal variations in climate, water temperature, salinity, and food supply .

Nordic Naturals Pet Cod Liver Oil naturally contains a higher amount of DHA compared to EPA per serving of oil . DHA helps support the development of the brain and eyes for growing puppies and kittens, helps support puppy trainability, and helps support the maintenance of the brain and eyes in the adult dog and cat . DHA also helps support cellular health and immune system health, as does EPA . EPA also helps support skin and coat health, joint health, and heart and kidney health .

In addition, our Pet Cod Liver Oil provides a natural source of vitamin A . Vitamin A is a fat-soluble, essential vitamin in the diets of dogs and cats .
