    Chapter 2:

The Start of a Beautiful Friendship

The sunlight had trouble pushing its way inside the depths of the cave but the light shone

through the ice cavern as a glass window and produced enough light to know that morning had come. The light hit Dytzendeans eyes and he awoke. Slowly, his body began to warm up. He removed the

deerskin blanket from his body and lit the fire which had gone out during the night. As he took his seat

next to the camp, he saw that Nordenwraith was still lying still with his back to Dytzendean. Slowly, hemade his way over to Nordenwraith and shook his shoulder.

Nordenwraith, wake up. As Dytzendean shook Nordenwraiths body, he saw the large gash onNordenwraiths left eye. Dytzendean began to shout.

Nordenwraith! Nordenwraith! but there was no answer from the boy's body. He quickly

looked around and grabbed one of the water bags and emptied it onto Nordenwraiths face waking him

from his unconsciousness.Whawhat happened? Nordenwraith asked, still delirious from the pain.

I thought I would ask you the same thing. Dytzendean said as he slowly helped Nordenwraith

onto the rock next to him. What happened to your eye?

My eye? Nordenwraith reached up and felt the large gash and winced in pain. The blood haddried but the pain still pulsated throughout his entire body. Yes, my eye.

Yes, your eye, what happened to it? Dytzendean said as he ripped a piece of cloth from one of

the dead soldiers, soaked it in water, and gave it to Nordenwraith.Nordenwraith grabbed the cloth and began to carefully wash the dried blood from his face. As I

trained with Titus in the stealth of archery, he would always tell me this saying, two eyes will lie, but

one shall surly die. He told me that it was a saying that his people held close to their hearts so that theymay remember what it took to master a bow. Titus told me a story of his mentor one day.

Long before Titus was captured by Serdonwraith and his army, Titus was taught archery by a

man named Calamus. Titus told me that Calamus was the best archer in the entire kingdom of

Sagittariis. Calamus would choose one student each year and take him away deep into the forestsoutside the kingdom walls and teach him how to become an excellent archer. He would spend a year

to Dytzendean's side. Are you okay? Norden asked.

Yes, yes. It happens each time I transform. My body has a timer on it when I transform. I never

know the exact time when it is going to change either. Norden helped Dytzendean up to his feet. Iwill be fine once I rest and eat something.

Well, there is food over there. Take as much time as you need, we have enough to last us.

Norden sat next to him as Dytzendean began to eat everything that was in reach. You have some appetite. Norden observed as Dytzendean shoved a third piece of hardtackinto his mouth and chugged his second glass of wine.

Yes. Dytzendean said, still chewing. I have to eat a lot to get my strength back to normal

levels after the transformation is over. He poured himself another glass of wine. It is okay though, assoon as I have eaten enough, I will have all my strength back and can transform immediately.

    Did Serdonwraith know about this?

No, I never had to stay transformed for more then a few minutes. This is actually only thesecond time I have 'timed out.'

Well, I can see we are going to have to have a lot of food hanging around. Norden joked.

No, eating is only a fast way of getting back my strength. I could sleep for a few hours whichwill restore me, or if I do nothing, it takes a whole day to recover my strength. Dytzendean threw the

last bite of his seventh piece of hardtack into his mouth and washed it down with the last bit of his fifth

    glass of wine.

'Okay, I think I am ready to get back at it. Dytzendean got back up and walked to his ax and in mid-stride, his body transformed. He picked up the ax and then started hacking away once more. The next

hour or so, Dytzendean hacked away until there was a small hole in the entrance. "We can fit through

here. Dytzendean told Norden.Very good. We need to gather as much food and supplies as we can and then head back to my

camp five miles from here. Dytzendean nodded. They quickly gathered all the food, wine, clothing

and weapons they could and left the cave.
