Group 4 Project The group 4 project is all about applying scientific skills to an experiment that is purely led by students. It is done within a group of people who come from various scientific background where we apply different concepts and ideas to our investigation.

What group 3 did for the group 4 project?

There are 4 people in our group; Michael, Aimee, Anoushka and Chris and the theme we had to focus on was about light. The aim of our investigation was to compare the light intensity and temperature to 3 different sources of light; a solar bottle light bulb, CFL bulb and a luminescence reaction. During the investigation, there were a few problems that we were not expecting to encounter, however we managed to find solutions independently without any assistance from teachers. What l've learnt is that time is very valuable and it shouldn't be wasted. Anoushka has learnt how to work more independently in the group. Michael has learnt that bleach is good for cleaning bacteria and Aimee has learnt that teamwork is important in order to get a task done in a timely manner with successful results. Overall it has been a very valuable experience and it really helped us learn how to work more collaboratively with each other.

Make friends and put them to work! Parent-Teacher-Student Associations have different roles in different schools. BISH is a private school: there’s no need to raise funds to build new facilities. We don’t need to donate books to the library. Why, then, do we need a PTSA? Our school is very diverse – mixed culture families, 3rd culture kids, locals, short term residents, long term residents. Both children and parents face displacement anxiety on arrival. How can this community function happily? That’s exactly where the PTSA fits in. We are a group of FUN-raisers. Our aim is to bring the community together, to foster friendships and develop connections that benefit all – parents, teachers and students. This year, events that would not have existed without PTSA (and additional volunteers) included: Curry & Quiz night, the Boot Scoot line dancing and cyber safety lecture for parents; Harvest Festival and BISH BASH music festival for the whole family. Still to come is the Prohibition Ball in River Oaks. Although we don’t aim to raise money, sometimes we can’t help it! In that case, we plough the funds back into the school, paying for the DJ for the whole-school Snow Ball in December; the year 6 garden, amongst others. And after the year’s events are concluded, we donate 25% of surplus to a charity chosen by the student council. This year’s recipient is Target Hunger. This year, for the first time, we included a year 10 student on the organising committee. Next year, with support from the school, we’d like to broaden that opportunity to include students from year 10 and from year 6. The PTSA committee seeks to represent the passions and interests of all parts of the school. It is responsible for steering and planning events, and then for the dispersal of any funds. Members may only serve 2 years, and this year most positions are vacant once more. On a personal note, I’ve really enjoyed getting to know and working with people I may never have met outside the committee. Some of it has been hard work, but I can honestly say it’s been worth it. Many of us will be around next year to help the new committee where needed. The school leadership team are very supportive and I’ve a feeling that next year will be even more successful than this year. Please come forward and donate a little of your time. Grab a friend and share a committee role together. The AGM is on June 25th at 8.30am, in the Candlelight Church. Come and find out more, vote on new committee positions, meet some new people.
