A fter seemingly endless dry, hot months of drought, homeowners everywhere have let their lawnsdie replacing them with dreams and ideas for something low on water and a lot more fun thana large lawn to mow week after week.

In this new water-saving front yard, the very large lawn was replaced with a beautiful, easy-carelandscape, and no lawn to mow. A curvy concrete courtyard was incorporated at the front of the houseand meanders to the side gate. The clients wanted a courtyard as an extension of their home forentertaining and relaxing with the family. The courtyard is also a comfortable place out of the summersun, shaded by a nearby redwood tree.

The concrete steps winding from the street to the front door create an elegant and welcomingentrance while passing through beautiful, drought tolerant plantings along each side of it. Moss rockboulders are placed at just the right locations in the planter beds and to anchor the twists and turns ofthe adjacent dry cobble creek. Some of the boulders are just the right height for a spot to sit while doinga little gardening or to watch the friendly birds and butterflies.

This colorful and easy-care front yard requires minimal maintenance and has low water needs. Thefront yard is now a part of the home enjoyed by the family rather than the task to mow week afterweek. This conceptual landscape design was created by Susan Silva and engineered and installedby Alpine Terrace Landscaping.
