Nana Learns New LanguageWilma Wilkins

It had been four months sincemy sixteen year old, “BonniePrince Charlie” died, and my

relatives and friends insisted it wastime for me to get another dog. Myhusband had dearly loved Charlie. He had bestowed the unusual nameto him because he had read that theprince was quitemischievous like ourdog. So, armed with16 years of experi-ence in the life of aGolden, I became aconfirmed fan. Noother breed woulddo.

My niece, wholives in Portland, alsoa Golden fan, sentme the informationabout “NGRR”.Karen Rice is therepresentative in myarea and it wasn’tvery long before Ireceived the newsthat a dog wasavailable. She is abeauty and a joy! Fortunately, asnot the case with so many otherrescue dogs, Nana is in good healthand has the happy, joyful love oflife so typical of the breed. She hadbeen under the expert care of D

Nacina Dawn, who is patientlytrying to teach me in handling myNana to behave as a proper ladyshould.

Her former owners were fromJapan and when they came to theU.S. with two Golden Retrievers, they were only able to keep one. So

much to my good fortune, I was thelucky one to get Nana.

She has had the difficulty oflearning a new language and theways of a different culture. Luckilyfor her and me, she had learned a

Charlie’s Knees - Now As Good As Gold!

Page 6 NORCAL Golden Retriever Rescue Winter 2001

By Suzanne Nickel

About two months ago, ouradopted 4-year old golden,Charlie, did something

he’d never done since being amember of our pack for the pastseven months . . . he RAN! He ranoff-leash, full steam ahead, tailwagging, smiling face, keepingpace with his golden pal, Rusty, across the grassy school yard.Seeing my beautiful golden retriev-ers running in tandem brought tearsof happiness to my eyes and laugh-

ter to myheart.

Readers may recall the article inthe Fall issue of our newsletterwhen I became aware of Charlie’ssevere ligament damage to bothhind legs shortly after his rescue.

The non-surgical alternative treat-ments were first explored and itwas determined that they would notwork on a permanent basis. Theanti-inflammatory drugs can causeliver damage and after awhile areno longer effective. A lifetime ofinjections would cost as much assurgery and the arthritis wouldsoon get worse leading to a severecrippling condition.

Although a painful procedure,

surgery ( having a 90% successrate) would enable the best resultsfor a normal life. Thus, Charliehad his first Tibia Plateau LevelingOsteotomy performed by Dr. JimRoush on August 14. The morningof the surgery, Dr. Roush kneltdown, stroked him and whispered

in his ear, “I want you to soon runlike a gazelle!”

The following day Charlie camehome with his left hind leg swathedin royal purple over a heavily-padded dressing from hip to toeand a matching bracelet bandageon his forepaw where his IV hadbeen inserted. He had a bandagearound his neck covering the trans-dermal morphine patch he wouldwear for the next 72 hours and a

shaved rectangle just north of histail where his epidermal anesthesiahad been given. However, in thetrue golden spirit, he managed aweak wag of the tail.

His post-surgical nursing instruc-tions included: strict confinement

Charlie’s Knees (Cont’d)

for 8 weeks, outside on a leashtwice daily for elimination, avoidall stairs, no jumping, towel useunder his waist for assistance in/outof the car and on steps, after 4weeks begin short leash walkingand give antibiotics 3 times dailyfor a week and pain medicationtwice daily.

In preparation for Charlie’s post-operative care, I borrowed a largeX-pen and installed it in the diningroom. Charlie would then be closeby a good deal of the time. It waswhen I was out of sight, however, that my care giving responsibilitiestook on a new dimension. Charliewould whimper non stop and as aresult, I slept on a bedroll next tohis pen for the following ten days.I soon realized that major surgeryon a dog is quite similar to that of atoddler for precise communicationis problematic. What’s the matterlittle one? Are you hungry?Thirsty? In need of a potty trip?Want a bedtime story? In need ofTLC? Perhaps a lullaby? How doI best comfort this beloved familymember?

A week later, Charlie began to feelmuch better. Within four weeks hestarted leashed walks and surprisedme by wanting to surge ahead withRusty. It was as if he was saying,“all right, my friends, let’s go!” Irealized then how much painCharlie had been experiencingprior to his surgery. Now that oneleg was feeling so much better, hestarted playing Fierce Dog withRusty and was enjoying it. Theyplay-wrestled together for the firsttime. Talk about a golden moment!

Charlie passed his range of motion/weight-bearing evaluation withflying colors five weeks after hissurgery. We continued his dailywalks and when I fell and broketwo ribs in September I hired aneighboring teen to assume thisresponsibility so that Charlie wouldcontinue to develop more strengthin his left leg. His punk haircut(totally shaved left hind leg andrectangular shaved spots on thenape of his neck and back) startedto grow back. His eight-week x-rays revealed a complete recoveryand it was on that wonderful day inOctober when he ran for the firsttime.

His freedom was short lived, however, because his right legsurgery was next. In addition toleveling the tibia plateau, Dr.Rousch removed two bone spursand cleaned up the torn meniscusmembrane. When I arrived at thehospital the following morning tobring Charlie home, I was advisedthat he was having difficultywalking. He had forgotten that hisleft leg worked just fine. The staffwrapped the top of his paddeddressing in bright blue, the bottomin red and used white adhesive tapeto make the stripes and cut-outstars so Charlie’s bandage re-sembled the American flag. Andhe was our hero giving me that let’sjust get this over with look.

Once back home, we began therecuperation process again. Rustyinstinctively knows to be gentleand considerate of Charlie. Hehasn’t tried to wrestle, but instead

gives doggy loves and kisses to hispack-mate.

It is now almost three weeks post-surgery. Charlie is walking well onhis prescribed twice-daily outingsand has let me know that he’s readyfor some non-prescribed walks aswell. While restraining him is mybiggest challenge at the moment, injust ten more days we can jumpbail, escape these four walls andexplore the glory of a wider worldon a leash.

Has this been an expensive proce-dure? Yes. Between $2,900-$3,500 per leg. Has it been worthit? Absolutely. I saw the previewon October 9th when Charlie firstran and that was on three goodlegs. By December 18th, eightweeks after the second surgery, hewill hopefully give me a repeatperformance this time on four legs. And then for years to come (as theDoctor said) he’ll run like a ga-zelle. It will be the best of Christ-mas gifts.

Rescued to RescuerBy Terry Hubbard, Director

Not all surrendered Goldens are destined forthe cozy warmth of an adopter’s homestead.Consider Ana...a 6 year old Golden who was

turned away by several families because of herunmanageability. Seemingly uncontrollable energymoved her from home to home and finally to BonnieBergin’s ‘The Assistance Dog Institute’ in SonomaCounty. After failing to win approval as an assistancedog, Bonnie gave Ana to Wilma Melville, founder andoverseer of ‘The National Disaster Searchdog Founda-tion’. It was here that Ana found her calling in life.

On the morning of that fateful 9/11, a call was sent outfor those that we now call heroes, to negotiate thetreacherous crumbling disaster at Ground Zero inManhattan. Among those called was Ana. CaptainRick Lee of the Sacramento Fire Dept. and, with Ana,a member of the California Task Force 7, arrived atMcGuire AFB, New Jersey on the evening of the 11thand were transported to, what most of us thought wasonly possible in the world of Hollywood.

No whimpers, no reluctance, no hesitancy, nodepression...only the matter at hand. Ana had beentrained for this day and through twisted steel andrubble, broken shards of glass, and peril all aroundthem, Ana and Rick set about searching for signs oflife. Precariously in harm’s way, but never faltering,Ana led Rick over tons of debris putting personalregards aside knowing that their mission was largerthan their own personal safety. For 10 days Ana, Rick

and other K-9 search teams dili-gently worked the massive wreck-age of Ground Zero. The trust ofthose around them was implicit andundeniable. But, as we know now, there would be no fruits of theirlabor.

Ana is retiring now, finally spend-ing her days and nights with Rickand his family, using her boundlessexuberance on a Golden’s secondlove...the tennis ball. To Ana andRick and the hundreds who joinedthem, and still are there, we sendour prayers, well-wishes andblessings of gratitude. Thanksfrom all of us at NGRR.

Thank You!

Donation (& Change of Address)

I would like to make a donation to NORCAL Golden Retriever Rescue to help provide shelter, food, and veterinary care for homeless Golden Retrievers. I would like my contributionallocated as follows:

General $__________Senior Goldens $__________

Zack’s Fund $__________Total $__________

Name:____________________________________________________________________Street Address:_____________________________________________________________City: _____________________________________________ State:_____ Zip:__________Telephone:(_____)___________________ E-Mail:________________________________ The above information is new. Please update NGRR’s mailing list.If donating by credit card, please check: Visa MastercardCredit Card Number: ______________________________ Exp. Date:________Print Name on Credit Card: _______________________________________________Credit Card Holder’s Signature: _______________________________________________

NGRR is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation under the IRS Tax Code. Tax ID #77-0392584

Donating to NGRRSince our organization is staffed entirely byvolunteers, every penny of your contributionwill help pay for veterinary care, food, andother direct expenses required in our workto rescue and find loving homes for hundredsof Golden Retrievers each year.

Gifts by Check or Credit CardA gift by check or credit card may be made out-right or as a pledge to be fulfilled over a periodof up to 5 years. If you itemize tax deductions, your contribution is fully deductible up to 50%of your adjusted gross income; any excess canbe carried forward for up to 5 additional years. To make a gift by check, simply fill out the do-nation slip, write your check, and mail to NGRR.To make a gift by credit card, please also tell usthe type of credit card, card number, expirationdate, and name as it appears on the card.

Payroll DeductionThe simplest (and most painless) way for manyof us to manage our gift giving is with an easypayroll deduction. Each year United Way, theCombined Federal Campaign (CFC), and othercharitable campaigns give working people the op-portunity to allocate payroll deductions or makea onetime contribution at work. Ask your em-ployer for a Donor Option Card to direct yourUnited Way contribution to NGRR.

Matching GiftOver 6,000 companies encourage their employ-ees’ philanthropy through a matching gift pro-gram whereby your employer will match yourindividual donations. This generous programdoubles—and sometimes triples—your donation.Ask your human resources department if your

employer has such a program. If so, you will begiven a matching gift form to send to NGRR withyour donation, and we’ll do the rest!

Appreciated SecuritiesYour outright gift of long-term, appreciated se-curities (stocks, mutual funds, and bonds) is ex-empt from capital gains taxes and, in most cases, enables you to obtain a charitable income tax de-duction equal to the market value of the securi-ties at the time of transfer, for up to 30% of youradjusted gross income.

Gifts Through Your EstateFor many of us, making a gift through our estateis the most realistic way to make a substantialcontribution to NGRR. At the same time, a care-fully-planned estate gift can reduce or eliminatefederal estate taxes, depending upon the size ofyour estate.

Life Income GiftsYou may be able to make a gift and receive di-rect financial benefits. Some financial vehicles, such as charitable trusts, can provide you and/oryour spouse with an income for life and a chari-table income tax deduction as well. These ve-hicles often pay a rate of return that exceedsmoney market and CD rates. In addition, theytypically help avoid capital gains taxes and re-duce estate taxes. Gifts can also be made throughyour estate while preserving assets for your cur-rent needs.

Gifts of Real EstateYou can make a gift of commercial or residentialreal estate and receive substantial financial ben-efits. If you give the property outright, you canqualify for a charitable income tax deductionbased on the appraised value of the property.

Tell NGRR How to Use Your Dona-

tionThere are several ways you can direct NGRR toallocate your contribution. You may choose tospread your donation across all funds, or you maytell us to apply all of it to a specific cause.

General FundContributions to this fund will pay for ordinaryveterinary care, food, and other expenses directlyrelated to our Goldens in foster care. Any excessmonies in this fund are allocated to NGRR’semergency reserve to help cover catastrophicevents, such as earthquakes and puppy mill raids,in communities throughout Northern California.

Senior GoldensContributions to this fund will be used exclu-sively to support the extra veterinary and fostercare usually required for dogs 8 years and older—our well-deserving Golden Oldies.

Zack’s FundInspired by “Zack,” a severely dysplastic Goldentaken in and treated by NGRR, this fund was es-tablished to provide extensive veterinarian care, surgery, and rehabilitation to young and deserv-ing Goldens who are critically ill, deformed, andinjured. These dogs need immediate access tofunds to restore their quality of life—and, in ex-treme cases, to save their lives—without finan-cially burdening their adoptive families.

For More InformationFor further information, please consult with yourfinancial planner or tax advisor, or contactNGRR’s Director of Development, Pat Lynch,at (510) 471-9777 or [email protected] Moreinformation about donating to NGRR can befound on our Web site at www.golden-rescue.org.
