Guide 2: Searching for Items in OverDrive
1. Go to http://onlib.lib.overdrive.com/
Or From the DCL homepage: http://dewlib.org
- Put your mouse on Catalogs at the top left of the page but don’t click it.
- Click on Downloadables Catalog that appears in the dropdown menu.
2. Find an item that is checked in or place a hold on an item for later.
We know it can be frustrating if you cannot find or check out a title you want.
Here are some tips:
2 a. If you are looking for a specific item:
- Use the search box at the top right of the page to look up
the title. Click on Advanced Search right below the search
box. It is often more convenient. Remember to choose
the format(s) that work on your device from the format
drop-down box and consider clicking the only titles with
copies available box. The easiest way to narrow your
search is to enter an author’s name, or title.
2 b. If you are browsing:
- Use the browsing menu at the top to pick a subject, like
fiction or nonfiction and a format.
- Try an advanced subject search for mystery, historical
fiction, cooking & food, or other topics you are interested
in. Try reading something by an author you have not read
yet. The librarians are always willing to recommend
authors similar to your favorites!
- You can also browse the collection of classics ebooks that
are always available.
3. ALWAYS check the availability of an item. eBooks and audiobooks are checked out just like regular
books and may be unavailable. Bestsellers are the first to go. If an item is on your must-read list, opt to
Place a Hold and you will be notified when the item is available. See Guide 1 Section 4 for instructions
on placing a hold. If you are a DeWitt Community Library cardholder, see Guide 9 to take advantage of
OverDrive Advantage and find additional popular titles you can borrow.
3 a. How to tell whether or not a title is available for checkout: The website shows which titles are available to borrow and which are not
using the format icons in the top-right corner of each jacket. The icon also
denotes the media type for each title. In our example, the icon is a pair of
headphones, indicating an audiobook.
- When a title is available for checkout, the icon in the corner is filled in.
- When a title is unavailable, the icon is greyed out.

Guide 3: Accessing Your OverDrive Account
1. Basic OverDrive Borrowing Information
As part of the OCPL system, DeWitt Community Library patrons can borrow up to 5
items simultaneously. OverDrive ebooks, audiobooks, music, and videos are checked out
for 7, 14, or 21 days, depending on your preference. The default length to borrow an
item is 14 days, but this can be changed in your account. Items will return automatically
after the borrowing period. You can return books early.
As a DeWitt Community Library cardholder, you have access to the OverDrive
Advantage books when you are logged into your account (see Guide 9 for details).
You can also place a hold on an item (see Guide 1 Ssection 4) or add an item to
a wish list of records you may want to borrow in the future. Your holds and lists
are accessed through your OverDrive account.
Accessing and Editing your Account
2. Go to http://onlib.lib.overdrive.com/
Or From the DCL homepage: http://dewlib.org
- Put your mouse on Catalogs at the top left of the page but don’t click it.
- Click on Downloadables Catalog that appears in the dropdown menu.
3. Sign in to OverDrive.
- Click Account in the top right navigation bar.

are listed here until they expire. The Read and Download options
are available here. See Guide 1 Section 3 for more specific
instructions and check out the other guides to transfer items to
devices like ereaders and MP3 players.
4. From this Bookshelf page, you can also return books early. This
can only be done with OverDrive Read ebooks and with titles that
have not yet been downloaded or transferred in a specific format.
5. Use the menu at the right of the screen to view the status of your
Holds and edit them.
You can also view your wish list items in the Lists
section of the menu. List items are mainly used to keep
a record of items you are interested in borrowing or
recommending to someone else but don’t necessarily
want to borrow right away.
6. The Settings option in the menu allows you to set how long you would like to
check out items. You can also change this for a specific item right before you
borrow it on the item record screen.

OverDrive page by clicking Sign Out.
