Using NoodleTools to Assist with Research What will I do to engage students’ interest in specific learning goals? Content Objectives ELA Grade 9-10 Writing Standard 7: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or solve a problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation. ELA Grade 9-10 Writing Standard 8: Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, using advanced searches effectively; assess the usefulness of each source in answering the research question; integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation. Library Media Grade 7-12 Stadard 4: Students will engage and extract information. Ask students to describe how they have gone about doing research before. What sources have they used to find information? What process did they use to collect information? How did they organize their information? How did they go about making sure they didn’t plagiarize? How did they cite their sources? Inform students that they will be introduced to a tool they can use when doing a research project that will walk them through and help them with all of these steps. (Check for understanding)

1. Help students sign up for a NoodleTools account:a. Access NoodleTools through Pioneer Library.b. Create their personal ID and choose their school.

2. Demonstrate how to create a project, then have students create a project. Discuss the different citations styles and levels.

3. Show students how to share their project with their teacher so their teacher can check their progress and provide feedback. Have them share it.

4. Demonstrate and have students add their research question and thesis statement. Discuss what makes a good research question (not too broad or narrow, meets the criteria of the assignment) and what a thesis statement is.

5. Demonstrate how to create citations. Remind students that Pioneer Library has great information for their projects (specifically EBSCO Student Research Center and SIRS) use an article from one of these databases to demonstrate creating a citation. Have students create a citation for one source.

6. Demonstrate how to take notes on Notecards. Discuss the different areas of the notecard including what to put in the areas for a direct quotation, a paraphrase or summary, and for “My Ideas.” Have students practice by creating one notecard for one piece of information they have found from the source they cited.

7. Ask students what they usually do to organize all of their notes once they have collected information. Demonstrate how to organize their notecards into piles on the “tabletop” and how the tagging feature works – for example: if they find, after dragging their notecards into piles that they need more information about a particular topic, they can tag that pile as a reminder to find more information.)

(Check for understanding: Ask if students have any questions. Walk around to spot-check their work as they are creating their citation and note card.)

you answer your research question.2. When you think you have found enough information to start organizing your notes,

begin organizing your notecards into piles.3. You can go back and forth between these two steps as necessary until you have

collected all of the information you think you may need.4. Remind student that if they forget how to do something or need help doing

something in NoodleTools, the Help feature has many resources. The NoodleTools page on the Kearns High Library Webpage (http://kearnsmedia.weebly.com/research-using-noodletools.html) also has several resources.

Show students how to use the outline feature of NoodleTools to create an outline for their paper:

Create topics and subtopics. Dragging notecards into the outline. Describe to students that they may use their outline directly from NoodleTools

or they can print it or export it to Word. Show them how to print and export it.Show students how to export their bibliography to include at the end of their paper.When they are finished with taking and organizing their notes, have them continue the process of writing their paper, by creating an outline.
