“Strategies for Raising Funds in Difficult Economic Times”

Joe BirchOur emcee for the annual Crystal Awards, news anchor Joe Birch will share how he identified creative strategies to help overcome

challenges faced when losing key sponsors of the Gibson 5K

Joe Birch co-anchors the 5, 6 and 10 o’clock news each weeknight on WMC-TV 5, the Memphis NBC television affiliate.

The Mid-South Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences inducted Joe Birch into its Silver Circle in 2009. The Silver Circle celebrates those who have devoted more than a quarter century service to the television industry.

Joe has devoted his entire career to the viewers of WMC-TV on the broadcast outlet’s highly rat-ed Action News 5. The Mid-South Gridiron Show, Inc. named Joe Birch Headliner of the Year for his decades of service to the non-profit community. Joe is the Founder-Race Director of the Gib-son Guitar 5K for St. Patrick Learning Center, Inc. which attracted a record crowd last month.

In memory of Laurie Cook McIntosh1952-2009

Laurie Cook McIntosh, a former president of the AFP-Memphis chapter, died after a long illness on June 15, 2009. She was a long-time fundraiser in the Memphis community, mentor to many development professionals, visionary leader, award-winning actress and beloved friend.

Her fundraising career included leadership positions at Le Bonheur Chil-dren’s Medical Center, the National Kidney Foundation, Planned Parent-hood and Youth Villages.

Her passion for and belief in the causes she championed was key to her success. Many fundraising profes-sionals throughout the city were blessed to have Laurie as a mentor and friend. Her leadership and vision helped both the causes she represented and the people who learned from her.

She leaves her husband, Bob McIntosh - a fellow actor - her mother, Sue Cook and was preceeded in death by her father, well-known broadcaster Fred Cook.

In spite of her health challenges over many decades, she faced life with strength, graciousness and joy. She will be greatly missed.

Laurie McIntosh defined the term “a classy lady”. She was professional in all she did. She was a leader in her tenure as AFP President, as well as guiding those of us who followed after her. She will be missed.

She was a fine fundraiser who treated the prospect and donor with the greatest respect and went about the cultivation process with honesty and enthusiasm. She was a tough, but sweet presence.

She had to be tough to have waged her battle with cancer for so many, many years.

Most know of her theatrical career, because that was what it was--a career. It was not a career in terms of making a living, but it was in making a life. She lived and breathed theatre. She appeared in many plays at Theatre Memphis, Playhouse on the Square, Circuit Playhouse and Germantown Community Theatre.

She always gave a sensitive performance. In her final performance, some four weeks ago - ”Third” at Circuit Playhouse - she played the part of a college professor who had cancer. According to a friend of

mine, before she took the part, she made sure the character got better. The character did get better and Laurie took the part. Unfortunately, real life did not emulate the play.

Notes from the June meeting

Dr. Bev Pray, Executive Director of the Center of Ethical Leadership at CBU, first walked those attending through a study of worldwide ethics and universal princi-ples. She then gave the Moral Competency Inventory. Mem-bers were able to see where they scored in four key areas: • Integrity• Responsibility• Caring for Others and• Forgiveness. Members will be able to go online later and retake the quiz to see how they might have improved.

Legislative Updates

— According to a report and recommendations by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Congress should keep the value of itemized deductions at today’s 33 and 35 % levels. Doing so would maintain the incentives for charitable giving and other deductible costs, and would help finance health care reform by saving $68 bil-lion over ten years.

— H.R. 2435, introduced by Rep. Suzanne M. Kosmas, D-Fla., would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to extend the tax-free treatment for distributions from individual retirement plans for charitable purposes.

Occupation? Executive Director of Development for The Campbell Foundation, the charitable arm of Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics5. Who was your most influential role model? I’ve had the good fortune to work with wonderful people through the years, but I have to say that my first professional role model at my first job after college was one of my bosses at a radio station group, who, even though he was a vice-president, he was “one of the team”, doing whatever needed to be done, even cleaning out the supply closet! He was so kind and humble and treated every staff member exactly the same.6. Favorite place to go, favorite trip, hike, etc.? Favorite place: Ft. Walton Beach/Destin; Favorite trips: Too many to mention - Cruises, especially one from L.A. along the Mexican Riviera and trips to Paris and the south of France 7. Favorite local business? Easy Way and Farmers Markets 8. Favorite food? Home cooking restaurants and TCBY9. Favorite book? I’m a John Grisham fan 10. Favorite movie? Love the classics - Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music 11. With my background at the Ronald Mc-Donald House, Le Bonheur Foundation, and now with Campbell, Memphians are very fortunate to have the highest caliber of healthcare available for children and adults and to have the facilities and scientists doing important medical research in many areas that affect the daily lives of millions of people.16. Tell me about one hidden Memphis treasure others should know about ? Many things...spend a day being a “tourist” in Memphis and discover what our visitors see and experience. 17.
