pay attention to text features

(pictures, graphs, and charts)

2) Think about what other word (synonym) might make sense in that sentence or

a word that might mean the opposite (antonym).

3) Substitute that synonym or antonym to see if it makes sense in the sentence.

4) Use the synonym or antonym to help you figure out the unknown word.

Nonfiction readers read expecting to learn new

vocabulary words. When we come to a word we

don’t know, we can use antonyms and synonyms to determine the meaning

of the new word.
