Did you know that one out every three bites of food you eat is made possible because of bees? As pollinators, bees help plants to survive. From these plants, we get more than just food. We also get materials such as cotton and other fibers. Pollination even makes many medicines possible.

Additionally, the plants that bees pollinate provide food for wildlife, prevent coastal erosion, produce oxygen to keep our air clean, and take in carbon dioxide to balance the global climate. In recent years, however, the bee population has been rapidly declining by the billions, leaving some species of bees at risk for extinction. Scientists all over the world are now searching for and discovering new ways to save the bees. You can help, too!

Ninety percent of plant species would not be here without pollinators. Pollination is the process of transporting pollen from one flower to another in order for the plants to reproduce. While there are other pollinators, including butterflies, birds, bats, and wasps, bee species are responsible for most of the pollination in the world. Bumblebees and managed bees from local bee hives do a large part of it, but wild honey bees are the top pollinator. They are volunteers that tirelessly pollinate crops.

save the bees

Why We Need to

Honey bees in a hive have particular roles. Most of them are worker bees. This group is made up entirely of female bees. According to Planetbee.org, a wild honey bee can visit more than 2,000 flowers in one day. Each year, these honey bees and other pollinators contribute $217 billion to the global economy in the form of food crops. Honey bees alone contribute $15 billion to the U.S. economy each year. They also work hard to pollinate wild plants. Wild plants and trees help to provide pleasant landscapes, homes for animals, food for wildlife and cattle, protection for our waterways, and clean air and water.

The decline of the bee population has been linked to several causes. Environmentalists say the rapid growth of cities has required green
