Dear SHA Family,

What does it mean to “Lead the Way” and why is it such a critical ideal? It seems

that, in spite of the considerable ink having been spilled on the subject, there

appears to be a startling dearth of truly inspirational leaders. This may be because

exceptional leadership is so tremendously demanding.

The Ha-Emek Davar, Rabbi Naftal Tzvi Berlin, sometimes known as the Netziv, writes on the section of

the Torah dealing with the appointment of the new leader of the People Israel after Moshe writes that a

leader must emulate the Almighty, and be “independently minded and not swayed or diverted by self-

centered desires or other pressures." Of all the leadership attributes of the Almighty to select, this is

quite an interesting one; noble and lofty, it demands from each of us a purity of truth and a

commitment to service.

At SHA, the rigor that we bring into every discussion and initiative is, simply put; what is best for our

students? Not what is expedient and never what would involve the least amount of effort, but rather a

commitment to exactitude, distinction and what is most fitting for each and every student. This

discipline has led SHA to truly becoming an outstanding school that truly is “Leading the Way.”

This monumental achievement takes considerable consistent and constant collective know-how,

unswerving devotion and a lot of hard work! This year we brought these projects and

initiatives to SHA:

Thank you for your part in all that we have been able to accomplish together – your generosity and

your leadership have made it all a reality!

With overflowing gratitude,

Rivy Poupko Kletenik, Head of School

SHA’s 65th ~ Making History!

The history of Jewish education in Seattle dates back to 1894 when

Congregation Bikur Cholim, the oldest continuous synagogue in

Seattle founded in 1891, sponsored the establishment of the first

Jewish educational program in the city, the Hebrew Free School, as

an after-school center for Jewish learning. It later became the Seattle

Talmud Torah formed as an institution for all Seattle Jews.

The Seattle Hebrew Day School was formed in 1947 to provide an

integrated program of Jewish and secular studies during regular

school hours. By 1948, the Seattle Talmud Torah and Seattle Hebrew

Day School had consolidated. In 1969, with the initiation of an early

childhood center, the name of the school changed to the Seattle

Hebrew Academy. Sixty-five years later SHA is a thriving, ground

breaking, nationally recognized Jewish Day School. What more

appropriate animating theme for this year can there be than,

“Making History?”

SHA invites you to be a part of Making History! Where were you in

1948? In what ways does the establishment of the State of Israel

interface with SHA? What year did you, your children or grandchildren

attend SHA? What are your warmest memories of our school? Help us

capture the Spirit of SHA. Join us in creating SHA Story Boards that

tell our story.

Be in touch with Michelle Shriki - [email protected]

The future is part of Making History too.

Join us in our celebration.

LEADING THE WAY TO OUR FUTURE

SHA Endowment Fund

“Jewish day schools are one of the pillars of Jewish engagement which energizes the

nucleus of Jewish life.” -Dan Perla, AVI CHAI Foundation

"Tzedakah and acts of kindness are the equivalent of all the mitzvot of the Torah"

– Jerusalem Talmud, Pe'ah 1:1.

Two very powerful statements. Here’s one more…

Seattle Hebrew Academy is fulfilling our 2011-2012 theme of “Leading the Way” as we launch our

Endowment Fund. Universities have benefitted for many years from endowments and now Day Schools

are gearing up to do the same. Endowments are a proven way to help schools thrive and grow. How

many investments give returns that are so much more than monetary? This investment isn’t trickle down,

it builds up. Plant that orchard. Sow those seeds. It ensures that the coming generations of our

community’s children have a school that provides them with that critical confluence of education,

citizenship, personal growth and continuity of traditions.

We are launching our campaign with a challenge from SAMIS. We have set a goal of $700,000 to be

raised by December 2014. Once the funds are raised, SAMIS will MATCH with an additional $700,000

which gives us a starting endowment of $1,400,000. Your gift already has a 100% return.

Be a part of something that will help our school serve the needs of future children. Earn a share in their

learning. It truly is the gift that keeps on giving. We ask that you come forward to partner with us.

We provide our students, families and community a school of excellence, founded on love of God & Torah and inspiring

academics within an atmosphere of K'vod HaTalmid, student dignity.

We develop students of character and integrity through the pursuit of Torah knowledge and secular studies, connection to

the State of Israel and commitment to our Ashkenazic and Sephardic heritage.

We prepare future generations to lead lives of service and mitzvoth and to perpetuate our Torah and traditions in Seattle,

Israel and worldwide.

SPIRIT OF SHA MURAL PROJECT UPDATE “The world endures only for the sake of the breath of school children”

We are thrilled to announce the installation of SHA’s first commemorative tile mural!

Created by SHA students, families, friends, staff, community members and alumni, this

Honoring Rabbi Morton &

Mrs. Leya Moskowitz Sunday, December 4, 2011

“An investment in SHA is an investment in the

future of your family and our community – it’s

the safest investment you will ever make!”

- Rabbi and Mrs. Moskowitz

On Sunday, December 4th friends

and community members gathered

to show their support for Rabbi and

Mrs. Moskowitz who were honored at

the SHA Annual Gala. For more than

three decades the Moskowitzes have

led the way for all of us through their

many years of service as Jewish

educators in our community and are exemplary role models who have dedicated their lives to

teaching our children.

In a surprising announcement made by the Samis Foundation that evening, veteran educators

Rabbi and Mrs. Moskowitz were the inaugural recipients of the Rabbi William H. Greenberg Award.

The Samis Foundation established the award in memory of Rabbi Greenberg who was a passionate

proponent of Jewish day school educational excellence. Rabbi David Twersky presented each

honoree with a $10,000 cash award and said the following, “ It is the hope of our foundation that by

publicly singling out such teaching professionals, we will be able to raise the prestige of the unsung

heroes of Jewish continuity and renaissance in our era – quality Day School educators—and

hopefully inspire young talented charismatic disciples of such individuals to consider the profession

of Day School education for themselves as well.”

It was a night to remember! The Moskowitzes were truly surprised and humbled by such an honor.

SHA EC PARTICIPATES IN FELLOWSHIP FOR LEADERSHIP AND EXCELLENCE SHA is honored to be participating in this unique opportunity for learning and growth, led by renowned

educator, Diana Ganger. This collaboration with six other Jewish area preschools provides us with great

insight and a forum for rich discussions leading to increased excellence at SHA and the greater Seattle Jewish

community at large.

Our focus areas include:

The importance of quality relationships between educators and parents

The importance of supporting and nurturing our staff

Refining our school’s cultural identity – incorporating Torah values with excellence in Early Childhood

education

Emotionally responsive practice – the most beneficial for children

The importance of reflection to guide us in our understanding of excellence

We have just completed Year One and look forward to the coming year with anticipation for increased

learning opportunities and much growth as we continue on our journey!

Florence Melton Adult Mini-School

This year SHA was proud to offer “The

Foundations of Jewish Family Living”

course, a new program for parents

providing a thought-provoking

encounter with the core values of

Judaism. Developed by the renowned

Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, a

project of the Hebrew University, the

curriculum brings to life the master

stories from our tradition and the

profound messages they convey.

Led by Rivy, the goal of this rich

learning experience is to bring the

Jewish conversation home to share

with young children. “Foundations of Jewish Family Living” provided our

families with the learning, the language, and the confidence to be a

teacher to their own children and support Jewish learning at home.

With the generous support of Education Services of the Jewish

Federation, SHA was honored to be chosen as the pilot school for this

enriching program.

Eighth Grade Seminar Project – Introductory Year!

Each 8th grader chose a topic to research over the course of the year

and then presented it to his or her peers. The challenge: projects must

integrate 2 or more curricular areas, involve some aspect of STEM

learning, and have a connection to Israel. A few of the topics students

chose: The Israeli Library System, a comparison of Krav Maga with other

martial arts, the impact of electric cars on the environment, and the

impact of computer screen viewing on vision. Through the course of

this project, students refined their research, note-taking, writing and

organizational skills, but more importantly they learned how to learn –

to take a subject of interest to them and immerse themselves in it.

SPOTLIGHT ON SCIENCE - This year we focused on re-vamping our science program with a purchase

of new science curriculum and materials to raise the level of instruction in science classes. Visiting science

professionals included: NASA scientists from the DREEMS (Dedicated to raising excitement for engineering,

math and science) project, beekeepers, a Raptor keeper, and the documentarians who filmed “The Whale.”

In addition, Camp Invention and Club Invention (programs started by the U.S. Patent Office to encourage

creative thinking and STEM learning) were added, along with field trips to Mt. St. Helens, the Pacific Science

Center “Blood and Guts” Exhibit, and a week

long visit for our 5th Grade to the IslandWood

outdoor learning center on Bainbridge Island.

...EC TO 8TH GRADE SHA is a Green School!

SHA was awarded a Green School Level 1 Certification in May of

2012, after a committee of students, parents and staff completed

a “No Idling” campaign. With help from the Puget Sound Clean

Air Agency, SHA’s Green Team monitored and educated the

community about the harmful impact of exhaust from idling

cars. Total weekly idling time at SHA dropped 92% after the

campaign! The school will focus on improving recycling and

composting efforts for the 2012-13 school year.

SAMIS FIELD TRIP Trustee Victor

Alhadeff, Rabbi Rob

Toren and Adam

Hasson (nephew of

Sam Israel) shared

with the Middle

School the rich history

of Sam Israel and his

commitment to

Jewish Education and

to the city of Seattle.

The day concluded

with a tour of Samis

owned historic

properties in Pioneer

Square including the

last wood building in

downtown Seattle.

LEADING THE WAY WITH...

MARTIN SELIG, accomplished Seattle

developer and alumni

of the Seattle Hebrew

Academy (then

Talmud Torah), spoke

with SHA Middle School

students about his life

story and

achievements. He

shared his childhood

experiences of leaving

Germany with his family

in the wake of the

Nazis’ rise to power and

arriving in Seattle as a

very young non-English

speaking immigrant.

He also spoke of his rise

to success in the

Seattle Commercial

Real Estate field.

This year, the SHA Middle School had the opportunity to learn about the innovations and

impact two local Jewish leaders have had on the Seattle Community.

...OUR COMMUNITY

Yom YeruSHAlayim

SHA’s first Yom YeruSHAlayim Celebration: the Art of Jerusalem, was a way to connect students and

the community to the Holy City. The Ari Grashin Gymnasium was transformed into Jerusalem with an

open air market, café, and even a Kotel!

With student performances, engaging

activities and Jerusalem inspired art - the

day we celebrated a united Jerusalem was

one to remember.

SHAvua Tov!

Another SHA first! Saturday Evening

brought students and parents together

for learning, pizza and music.

Thank you, Rabbi Meyers, for

“Leading the Way!”
