Activities – This should be the byword for the Nobility and Ladies of Kalif territory. If you will read the Kalif Kall or check the Kalifshriners.com web page under calendar, you will see we

have a lot for you to do or attend in the months ahead. You can also go to Shrinersvillage.com and see what Shriners are doing nationally. At Shrinersvillage you need to enter your last name, membership number (it’s on your dues card!) and Kalif and you are into the web page.

Upcoming events in the local area are the Pot Lucks at Kalif and the Annual St. Patty’s Party in mid-March. Shrine Club visitations will start in Gillette and Newcastle and then proceed to Worland, Riverton, Thermopolis, Cody and Jackson. All of the dates can be checked out on our web page or by looking in the 2010 Calendar and Directory that was mailed out in February. These events are planned for YOU, so let’s see your friendly faces! Oop’s don’t forget the big Spring Ceremonial in Newcastle in the middle of April!

Upcoming events in the planning stage are a chicken fried steak dinner by the Kalif Horse Patrol on April 17th at the temple. Also, in the planning stage, the Kalif Directors Staff is planning a Rocky Mountain Oyster feed on May 30th. Watch for details and cards in the mail.

The Kalif web page has been updated and the calendar of events is shown through next December. We still have a few problem areas, such as formatting, that are being worked on by the web designers. The Kalif Kall will also be online, but at this time that is being handled by the web designers and is not up to date. If you will look under the heading “Divan” you will find a listing of all the Club and Units complete with officers, telephone numbers and meeting times. Check it out!

We could sure use a few more bodies at the monthly stags. The steaks have been outstanding and where else can you get such a great meal for twelve bucks. If you think the price is too high – then you have not been out to any of the local restaurants lately. Just don’t forget to make your reservations!

The commemorative donor brick program is finally drawing to a close. I recently placed an order for twelve more bricks and that leaves space for just four more bricks. Give me a call pronto if you want to have your name or the name of a loved one placed in the brick area at the front of the temple. This will be the end of the program and nothing is planned for the future.

At the present time the Kalif Oasis has been moved to the lower bar area. The upper bar is undergoing the final stages of a refinishing project and when it is finished it will be something to see. All the wood is being refinished and new counter tops are being installed.

Several of us were sitting in the Oasis recently and the name of Noble Bill Harrison came up and we were wondering how he was enjoying the winter down in Arizona. Someone mentioned the time that Bill saw this poor old man walking in the rain. This poor old man’s shoes were so bad that one of the soles were actually flapping loose. Bill stopped the man, reached into his pocket and pulled out a roll of bills that would choke a horse. He slipped off the rubber band, gave it to the guy and said, “ Here, put this around your shoe and it will stop the flapping.” That Bill is sure one big hearted guy.

Soldier's Actions Change Iraqi Family's Lives

Salt Lake City – The actions of one Idaho soldier have changed the lives of an entire Iraqi family. Three of the family’s children have a severe type of dwarfism and needed medical attention they couldn’t get in Iraq. The little girl has a long road to recovery. Her family had been threatened by terrorists in Iraq for helping U. S. soldiers. Now they have a new life in the United States thanks to one man.

The story starts with one soldier called to serve in Iraq. But because of his age, and the fact he had already served in the military nearly 40 years ago, Russell Hayes almost didn’t go. That was until his wife told about a feeling she had.

“She said, ‘Honey, why fight it? Maybe God has a reason for you to go to Iraq.’” Hayes recalled.

What Hayes didn’t know was that on the other side of the world a man much like him was praying for help.

When Hayes arrived in Iraq, he read an article about Abdul Salman – a father of six children, who had been helping U. S. soldiers. He was disabled, and then Hayes got to the last line of the story; it said that three of Salman’s children had a degenerative type of dwarfism.

“Me, being the father of a dwarf, that just jumped right out at me,” Hayes said.

His own daughter has dwarfism. At that moment, he knew that was the reason he was serving, and he knew he wanted to help them.

“I believe God put all this together,” Hayes said. “It was not coincident. God put this together.”

Hayes voluntarily extended his tour of duty to make sure the family got visas. Other soldiers pitched in, paying to fly the family to the United States. Once here, Hayes and his wife started paying for a house near them in Kuna, Idaho, for the Salmans. He also arranged for Shriners Hospital to help with the children’s medical expenses.

The oldest, 14-year-old Saja, is in the worst condition. She had a series of complex surgeries a few days ago and is now recovering at Primary Children’s Medical Center. The other children will have similar procedures.

Through a translator, Abdul expressed his gratitude.“He said, ‘I am before hopeless, but now I have hope,’”

the translator explained. That hope came from one soldier’s actions.“Every one of us can do something”, Hayes said.

“Recognize something that’s placed in front of you and go ahead and go with it.”

Thanks Al BedooA tip of the Fez to Al Bedoo, our Shrine neighbors to

the north, and its Nobles and Ladies that each year for many years have crossed the sands to add another dimension to our Potentate’s Ball by inviting Kalif Shriners and their Ladies to a hospitality room prior to the Potentate’s Ball at the Best Western in Sheridan.

The camaraderie is great; the food is fantastic; and the laughter and smiles that accompany this annual get-together is heartwarming.

Thanks Al Bedoo, it is an honor to have your friendship.Yours in the Faith — Noble Bob Gould

It is natural to associate the fez with Shriners Hospitals for Children. Because of this, meticulous attention must be given to all fundraising activities, including circuses, to make certain that such activities comply with the law of the land and that a contributor is not led to believe that his money will be used for the Hospitals when all or a portion thereof will be used otherwise. The integrity of our charity and of our fraternity must remain above reproach.

Your specific attention is called to the following fraternal and charitable bylaws:

x335.3 USE OF NAME ‘SHRINERS HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN.” The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any fundraising activity by a temple or Noble without the written consent of the Imperial Potentate and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hospitals is prohibited.

x503.10 The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any commercial product or business enterprise is prohibited unless the written consent of the Board of Directors and Trustees has been first obtained.

Now, therefore IT IS HEREBY ORDRED:

1. Fundraising for Fraternal Purposes:

(a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any fundraising activity without the express written consent of the potentate of the temple having jurisdiction thereof.

(b)There can be no representation, express or implied, that the proceeds will be for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

c. The temple potentate shall carefully examine all phases of the advertising, promotion and solicitation to determine that it complies with x335.3 and x503.10 of the fraternal and charitable bylaws.

(d) The temple potentate must approve the terms and provisions of any contract for a fundraising activity after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, and additionally, as may be required by the temple bylaws.

(e) A copy of the temple potentate’s written consent shall be mailed to the Executive Vice President, Imperial Council. Further, such written material pertaining to the fundraising activity, as requested by the Executive Vice President, Imperial Council shall be promptly mailed to him.

2. Fundraising for Charitable Purposes:

(a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any charitable fundraising activity other than for Shriners Hospitals for Children, and said activity shall not be in the jurisdiction of any other temple. Permission therefore must be first obtained in writing from the temple potentate. The temple potentate must then obtain written permission from the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees. This request for written permission shall be sent to the Executive Vice President, Imperial Council, P. O. Box 31356, Tampa, FL 33631.

However, a joint charitable fundraising activity with another x501(c)(3) charity may be authorized provided that a minimum of 50% of the net proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children, and the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees determine, on a case by case basis, that it is in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children and they grant their written permission for the activity.

(b) 100% of net proceeds (as defined in the Charitable Fund Raising-Approval And Reporting provisions of any existing General Order) from charitable fundraising must be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children except

for such portion thereof as may be permitted to be retained for the temple Shrine Hospital Patient Transportation Fund, pursuant to the Special Purpose Funds provisions of any existing General Order. Provided, however, if the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees determine for good cause shown, that the law of the land requires that a portion of the net proceeds must be distributed locally, then they may, if they determine it to be in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children, grant their written permission for such distribution.

(c) The temple shall report the result of each charitable fundraising activity within sixty days of the activity, pursuant to the Charitable Fund Raising-Approval and Reporting provision of any existing General Order.

(d) This section shall not apply to activities exempt under x335.4(b) of the bylaws of The Imperial Council.

(e)Each independent corporation or entity that receives the permission of the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees to raise money for Shriners Hospitals for Children, and which does not have its financial statements audited pursuant to x334.5 & x337.8 of the bylaws of The Imperial Council, shall have its financial statements audited by a certified, chartered or licensed public accountant and shall submit such audit report to The Imperial Council within 120 days of the activity.

3. Statement of Purpose and Disclosure:(a)Every fundraising activity must contain factual information on

its solicitation material, tickets, programs and documents, including all electronically transmitted materials, regarding the use of the proceeds.

Examples: “Proceeds are for the benefit of (____Shriners) (______Shrine Club) activities. ” Proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children.”

(b) Every fundraising activity which is not entirely for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children shall prominently state on the solicitation material, tickets and documents that “payments are not deductible as charitable contributions.”

© There must be compliance with the Revenue Act of 1987 provision of any existing general order by U. S. temples.

4. Compliance with Applicable Laws:It is the responsibility of the temple potentate, after receiving the advice

of the temple attorney, to determine that there is compliance with all applicable laws in its jurisdiction for the temple’s fundraising activities.

5. Financial Records: (a) The temple shall maintain detailed financial records pertaining

to all fundraising activities involving Nobles, clubs, units, organizations of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations. Details of all revenues and expenditures shall be maintained in such financial records.

(b) The temple must retain such detailed financial records for a period of seven (7) years.

(c) There must be compliance with Financial Reporting on Charitable Funds and Activities provision of any existing general order.

6. Notification to Nobility:A copy of the Fundraising Activities provisions of this General Order

shall be printed in the temple publication at least once every calendar year. If there is no temple publication, then a copy shall be mailed to each Noble in the temple not later than the last day in March of each calendar year.

7. Discipline:Any officer, Noble or temple which violates a provision of Fundraising

Activities is subject to discipline pursuant to the bylaws of The Imperial Council.

Family First, Shriner's Hospitals for Children Form

PartnershipSuper Bowl-winning Coach Tony Dungy addressed

the media yesterday evening at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando to announce partnerships between Shriners Hospitals for Children and the national nonprofit Family First, for which Dungy serves as a spokesman. “I’m here today not representing the NFL, but Family First,” said Dungy. “We’re all about strengthening children and families, just as the Shriners are. We thought it was a natural partnership.”

Imperial Potentate Jack H. Jones, President and CEO of Shriners International and Peter F. Armstrong, M. D., Chief Medical Officer of Shriners Hospitals for Children, also addressed the media to praise the partnership.

“I don’t know of two organizations that care for children better than Family First and Shriners Hospitals for Children,” said Jones. “We are so grateful to have this partnership with Family First.”

Dungy and his family have personally experienced the expert level of care provided by Shriners Hospitals for Children.

“We have a son who has special orthopaedic needs,” said Dungy. “We took him to the Shriners Hospital and they did things that normally couldn’t be done.”

The press conference was one of many events taking place during the week of the Asset Protect East-West Shrine Game, benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children, scheduled for Jan.23 in Orlando. Dungy played in the 1977 East-West Shrine Game, America’s longest-running college all-star football game.

Every year, East-West Shrine Game players visit one of the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children to visit with patients and experience first-hand the purpose behind the game.

“You would think the thrill would have been playing with those great athletes in a national all-star game,” said Dungy. “But it was secondary to the trip we took to the Shriners Hospital. It was such a thrill.”

At Shriners Hospitals for Children, care is provided in an environment that involves the patients’ families in the recovery process.

“Shriners Hospitals for Children prides itself in providing family-centered care,” said Dr. Armstrong. “We’ve just expanded our potential in family-centered care with our partnership with Family First.”
