RETURN SERVICE
REQUESTED Dear Friends:
As you are all aware of, we rely on donations for the center at times for
bingo prizes, and other needs. We are asking for help with yarn and ten-
nis balls for the clients walkers. The tennis balls not only make the walk-
er move more smoothly, but also help protect our floor. Thank you in ad-
vance if you are able to donate.
Please remember that when paying the balance of your bill and trust
fund, it is important that you write two separate checks. For client trust
funds, please write the check to Marian E. Burch Adult Day Care Center.
For the Center bill, please write the check to Calhoun County Medical
Care Facility.
As many of you already know, the ADC Nurse will administer medications
to your loved one while they are at the Center. However, according to
policy, it is mandatory that the medication be in a current, prescription-
labeled bottle. The date on the bottle cannot be expired. The medication
will be dispensed by the ADC Nurse according to the directions on the
bottle. Please be sure that the directions are correct. If you have any
questions, please call Angela.
As we move into cooler weather, please make sure all coats have your
name in them. Please limit the bags you are bringing into the center, to
better help with loading and unloading time.
Our Prearranged Overnight Respite is growing and if you are in need of
this service, please contact us for information. Remember, there is finan-
cial help available and staff would be happy to discuss those with you. It’s
important for caregivers to get rest and free time to do something without
worrying about their loved one.

THE SUN AND SKIN
The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes. Follow these recom-
mendations to help protect yourself and your family.
Shade
You can reduce your risk of skin damage and skin cancer by seeking shade under an umbrella, tree, or
other shelter before you need relief from the sun. Your best bet to protect your skin is to use sunscreen
or wear protective clothing when you’re outside—even when you’re in the shade.
Clothing
When possible, long-sleeved shirts and long pants and skirts can provide protection from UV rays.
Clothes made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection. A wet T-shirt offers much less UV
protection than a dry one, and darker colors may offer more protection than lighter colors. Some cloth-
ing certified under international standards comes with information on its ultraviolet protection factor.
If wearing this type of clothing isn’t practical, at least try to wear a T-shirt or a beach cover-up. Keep in
mind that a typical T-shirt has an SPF rating lower than 15, so use other types of protection as well.
Hat
For the most protection, wear a hat with a brim all the way around that shades your face, ears, and the
back of your neck. A tightly woven fabric, such as canvas, works best to protect your skin from UV
rays. Avoid straw hats with holes that let sunlight through. A darker hat may offer more UV protection.
If you wear a baseball cap, you should also protect your ears and the back of your neck by wearing
clothing that covers those areas, using a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15, or by staying in
the shade.
Sunglasses
Sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays and reduce the risk of cataracts. They also protect the tender
skin around your eyes from sun exposure.
Sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays offer the best protection. Most sunglasses sold in the
United States, regardless of cost, meet this standard. Wrap-around sunglasses work best because they
block UV rays from sneaking in from the side.
Put on broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15 before you go outside, even on slightly cloudy or
cool days.
Sunscreen
Put on broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15 before you go outside, even on slightly cloudy or
cool days. Don’t forget to put a thick layer on all parts of exposed skin. Get help for hard-to-reach plac-
es like your back. And remember, sunscreen works best when combined with other options to prevent
UV damage.

VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH: GARY& NORMA
This month’s Volunteers
of the Month are Gary
and Norma Gallaway.
Norma’s mother was a
resident at CCMCF, and
they organized their
music team from Grace
Fellowship Bible Church
to play music for the
residents. The church was
just getting started and
did not have a building
for church service.
CCMCF allowed GFBC
to have Easter services
with them. GFBC also
started singing at Marian
E. Burch Adult Day Care
four times a year.
Norma shared that what
they enjoy the most about
volunteering is the
residents/clients, and staff
singing along to the old
hymns. They also enjoy
the smiles on all of the
faces.
Gary and Norma were
married in 1970. They
are Worship Leaders At
GFBC. They have led
the music at several
churches over the past 40
plus years. They enjoy
going to antique malls
and collecting antiques.
Norma enjoys
photography, taking
photos of nature, birds
and animals.
Norma and Gary
wanted to share the
following; “We thank
Marian E. Burch Adult
Day Care and CCMCF
for allowing us to
minister in music at
their facilities. We
truly enjoy coming,
and we hope we
continue to have the
opportunity to minister
in the future”.
The staff and clients
would like to extend
their congratulations
to Norma and Gary for
being selected the
September Volunteer of
the Month.
Here’s to all the
volunteers...those
dedicated people
who believe all
work and no pay.

Client of the Month ~ John Korbakis
John was a PFC in the United States Army from 1963-1965. He was then a
bartender and later became a cobbler in which he own his own shoe repair
shop in downtown Battle Creek. In 1980, John was forced to retire after a
closed head injury from an auto accident caused by someone else. John’s
hobbies included playing golf and lifting weights at the YMCA. John is
taken care of by his loving wife Stella as well as his son Chris. John also has 3 daughters, 6
grandkids, and a grand dog. When asked what he liked the most about attending the center, he
stated that he enjoyed the daily activities, the friendly staff, and interacting with the other clients.
Congratulations John on being the client of the month!
