A GOLD MINE FOR READERS OF ALL AGESThis brochure contains the names of 246 candidates from 64 countries who are nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2019. The list is a gold mine for anyone interested in international children’s and young adult literature – and would not be possible without the work of more than a hundred nominating bodies all over the world. We are deeply grateful for their valuable work in providing us with material and information describing the quality of each and every candidate.

THE LAUREATE OF 2019So far, eighteen laureates have received the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. Who will be the next to join this fantastic group? On Tuesday April 2, 2019, the Chairman of the jury will announce the new laureate(s). The event takes place in Stockholm and will also be broadcast to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. ASTRID LINDGREN MEMORIAL AWARD (ALMA) is the world’s largest award for children’s and young adult literature. The award amounts to SEK 5 million (approx. EUR 490 000) and is given annually to people and organisations working in the spirit of Astrid Lindgren. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is the foundation of our work and the award is designed to promote interest in children’s and YA literature. An expert jury selects the laureate(s) from candidates nominated by institutions and organisations all over the world. The award was founded by the Swedish government in 2002 and is administrated by the Swedish Arts Council.
