Nomads News Official Newsletter of Nomads Golf Club Perth Western Australia
Welcome to the July issue of Nomads News. We were hoping to
launch our new-look newsletter to coincide with our 5th anniversary
but, due to a few technical issues, we’ve decided to postpone the
launch to August.
What a month it has been………..Nomads Golf Club-Perth
celebrated its 5th birthday in true Nomadic style. It was indeed a
pleasure and a privilege to host our National President, Mark
Howard-Browne and Past National President and current National
Secretary, Jo Landsberg at both the dress-up gala dinner at Blu Grill
Restaurant and Joondalup Resort for our monthly game, attended
by 51 players. Our thanks and appreciation to B & Anne Anderson
and Ken Lloyd for taking on the tasks in ensuring that both the dinner
and game were organised with military precision.
Elsewhere in this edition of Nomads News you will find information
regarding the North vs South Challenge Cup as well as the launch of
the next big event of the year, namely our annual Charity Day, both
of which, I hope, will be well attended by as many of you as
possible.
Until Next Month……………Happy Golfing

Captain’s Corner
Dear Nomads and friends of Nomads As most of you know by now, July 2018 was a very important month for us as we
celebrated, in real style, our 5 year anniversary as a club.
We had our celebration dinner at our loyal sponsor, Blu Grill in Woodlands on
Saturday, 5 July. It was a wonderful evening and it was evident that fun was had that
evening. I again extend a big thank you to our organisers, B and Anne Anderson, Ken
Lloyd and Fred Meijer. Dinner was followed the following day by a game at Joondalup,
which is probably one of the best courses we have played to date. Both events were
attended by our National President, Mark Howard-Browne and Past National President
and current National Secretary, Jo Landsberg and from feedback received, they had a
great weekend. There were some good scores on the day, I am sure due to the
sponsorship of KWV wines the night before. It certainly made the start to my golfing
day slightly challenging!
I also had the privilege to induct 2 new Nomads into the fold namely, Francois Du Toit
and Brian Quinn. Welcome gentlemen, may your stay with Nomads be long and
enjoyable.
Our next game is at The Cut (Dawesville) on 5th August 2018 and there are not many
places left. Bring your best game and plenty of gold coins!
Best wishes, Hector
SHOOTING FROM THE LIP………..
It is with sadness and regret that we say good-bye to one of our
long-standing sponsors. Peel Golf Centre will be closing their
doors at the end of July. Barry asked that, if you have any
Peel Golf Centre vouchers, you pop into the store before the
end of the month to redeem them.
We take this opportunity to extend our thanks and appreciation
to Barry Price for his sponsorship over the past 2 years and
wish him the best for the future.
NORTH vs SOUTH CHALLENGE CUP
Entries for this are slow in coming in. At the time of this
publication 4 Southeners and 6 Northeners have submitted
their intentions to play. C’mon guys, let’s make this another
memorable event on our playing calendar. Simply log onto our
website and follow the prompts to register your intentions. We
would like to have 20 players from each side of the river
participating in, what has proven to be, a popular event.
Please Note: Closing Date for entries is Friday 10th August
2018.

NOMADS APARREL
By Garth Ellis
I have stock of the following. (If there is anything else you may be
after, come and talk to me so I can see what can be done)
Caps & Hats (floppy) – Have you mislaid, lost or wish to purchase a
spare? –
Shirts – Is your golf shirt starting to look a bit worn or just wanting
another shirt?
Socks – I’m sure that your socks have taken strain. –
Nomad Belts – Has your girth increased or decreased? – I may just
have the right size for you.
Jackets – Short Sleeved (reversible) – Stock up now for Winter....You
may l want to invest in a warm jacket. These come with the Nomads
Logo and your name embroidered.
Scorecard Holders – Keep your scorecard tidy and dry.
golf.ing, a duffer’s dictionary by Henry Beard & Roy McKie, continued…….
yard - One of the basic units of measurement in golf which, when
used to report the length of a drive, is 22 inches. Some other
measurements players employ include; the stroke (2 swings = 1 stroke);
5 minuted spent looking for a lost ball (1000 seconds); a 30-foot putt
(divide by 5 if preceded by the phrase “I sunk a “ and by 10 if
preceded by “I missed a”); and the club-length in determining how
far a can be dropped away from a hazard (the length of the
clubhouse along its longest axis, not including the stairs or porches.
yips – Nervous affliction that causes players to miss very short putts
which can be cured by using an exaggerated stiff-armed, shoulder-
centered putting stroke, or switching to a long-handled putter, or
playing exclusively with blind golfers.
zero – 1. A hole-in-none. A “goose egg”on a hole is theoretically
possible if, in a rub of the green, an outside agency, such as an
animal, should snatch the ball off the tee during a player’s backswing,
run with it to the green, and deposit it in the hole; and if a player with
a handicap greater than 18 scores a hole-in-one on a par 3 in a
tournament, he would have a net “one-for-none” or a “naught.”
2. The chances of a golfer who puts down a “0” on a scorecard of
ever getting another golf game.
zip code – The roughly rectangular area surrounding the tee within
which a golfer attempt to confine the flight of the ball
