Nomad News Official Newsletter of Nomads Golf Club - Perth - Western Australia
Well, that’s it. As the sun sets on yet another fantastic playing all that remains to be said
is.........what a year!
What next you ask, well on the horizon the Gold Cup, the Finals of the Peter Thomson
Knocout Cup & Plate and yes, the elephant in the room, the dreaded AGM. This is,
unfortunately, something that has to be held at the beginning of each playing year. This is
the platform where you, the members of good standing, have the opportunity to vote for your
candidate to take over the position of Junior Vice-Captain. Two candidates have been
nominated to fill the position namely, Craig Le Roux and yours truly, The “Fr”-editor. The
AGM is also a platform for you to air your views and to guide your committee to work for you
to make improvements and grow the Club
There is just not enough space available to comment on all the achievements we have had
over the past 12 months. We all know what we did and what we did not do but 2018
promises to be another outstanding year. What I enjoy is that, even though each and every
member has an opinion to share, we , at the end of the day, with input from the members,
find a solution and everybody is happy as Harry. That, gentlemen, is what Nomads is all
about. After all John Donne stated in perfectly....No man is an island entire of itself”
On a lighter note, the “Fr”-editor has it on good authority that our own Gus Augustus has
been appointed as the “Minister of Golf & Breweries” in the new (and hopefully, improved)
Zimbabwean cabinet. Let’s give the Hon. Gus a roaring welcome at Mosman Park (and I’m
talking red carpet treatment and suitable transportation to get him around the course. Beryl,
on the other hand has been appointed as his personal chauffeur – well done to you both.
Greg Nairn has just undergone knee replacement surgery and I’m sure when I say – May
your healing be short and painless. Get better soon, mate and we will soon see you back out
on the course.
Please join me in wishing those who have qualified for the Gold Cup, Peter Thomson Cup /
Plate finals (and not forgetting the putt-out for the NvS Cup) a great day out and happy
golfing,
Until Next Month

CAPTAIN’S CORNER
Another great day in Australia is when we, as Nomads, gather for our
monthly game on a bright and sunny Spring Sunday morning. In this
instance Gosnells again proved to be a good call in terms of the facilities
available. There was however a small problem with one of the holes being
closed for maintenance but this did not deter any of us and I must admit
that there were some very good scores recorded on the day which bodes
well for those who have qualified for the Gold Cup in December.
The number of players attending our monthly matches is steadily increasing
and it was pleasing to have another full field of 50 players (45 Nomad and 5
Guests)
With our Annual General Meeting a matter of a week away I would like to
draw your attention to the upcoming election of a new Junior Vice-Captain.
Nominations have been received for two candidates, Fred Meijer, the “Fre-
Editor and Craig Le Roux, the “Web Guru” and I would like to wish both
candidates good luck with the election. On the subject of the AGM, if any of
you wish to place an item for discussion on the Agenda then please ensure
that your written submissions are sent to Secretary Robert Younghusband
at [email protected] by not later than 29 November 2017.
Our Christmas Celebration Dinner on 1 December at BLU GRILL –
Woodlands has been confirmed and I have been advised by the “Fr-Editor
that Invitations have been mailed to all of you. Thanks to those who
responded and if you have not, as yet, made up your mind, RSVP date has
been extended to Wednesday 29th November. Contact Fred at
[email protected] by not later that 24th November
To those who have qualified for the Gold Cup and the finalists in the Peter
Thomson Cup & Plate I wish you all the best and enjoy the game.
The December issue will be my swansong in the Captain’s Corner and I
promise not to take up too much space

RULES
CORNER by Neville Walker
Next month’s game at Mosman Park on Sunday 3rd December
involves a number of events namely;
1. Monthly Game
2. Gold Cup
3. Finals of the Peter Thomson Knockout Cup & Plate
and, of course, our Annual General Meeting.
The Gold Cup event involves all monthly winners in each
division for the playing year between December 2016 and
November 2017. As stated, only those mentioned above qualify
to participate as well those who were counted-out on the same
score.
Please note, you may only compete in one division. If you have
qualified in two divisions, you have to elect in which division
you wish to compete prior to tee-up.
Handicaps for Gold Cup competitions are based on an average
score of the previous six (or fewer) meetings that you have
played in the given year.
Best Worst Golfer – The winners of the Crying Towel
throughout the playing year will play for the trophy and the
winner will be the golfer who scores the most points on the
day.
Additional Competitions (Calculated by Samson software on
completion of the December game results)
Best Golfer of The Year – The cumulative score of all your
games played during the calendar year.
Best 6 – The best 6 scores of all months of the calendar year.
Odds Trophy – The 3 best scores of the odd calendar months of
the calendar year.
Evens Trophy - The 3 best scores of the even calendar
months of the calendar year.
Handicapper’s
“Rantings”–
By Neville Walker
Nothing really to report as generally the day went off ok. A bit of a hiccup at the
start with the closure of Hole 15, being substituted by a 13a and 13b. Typically
I call the golf course a couple of weeks prior to the game to enquire about any
updates and local rules that may apply but in this instance, none were evident.
October and November are usually maintenance months at most private
courses as they follow their Club Championships in September. During this
end-of –year period, greens and fairways are cored and some holes, greens
and bunkers may be ruled as temporarily “out-of-play”.
Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to get around the maintenance
situation as I book courses 6 to 9 months in advance. Switching a course at
the last minute is not an option as it is difficult to find a substitute course at
short notice. So, as my daughter says to me “build a bridge and get over it”
Nomads, as amateur golfers, are used to taking the good with the bad. Bob
Rotella, the golf psychologist, wrote a book entitled “Golf Is Not a Game Of
Perfect” and this applies to the courses we play on.

Our resident Finesmaster, Fleecer of Funds from unsuspecting players on Club, Charity Day’s and National levels and , having been known to get money out of a stone, Martin Lea will be winging his way to Dubai in the next couple of weeks, having taken up a new work contract. All is not lost as he told us that he, like Arnie, “I’LL BE BACK” and that he expects to be called on to be Finesmaster whist back in town. Marty, thanks for the good times. You will be sorely missed. I’m sure Simon Timpano and Brad Davey will keep your good work going. Enjoy the experience and keep us posted. (also enjoy playing golf on world-class golf courses)
Our Annual General Meeting will be held at Mosman Park on Sunday 3 December 2017 directly after the conclusion of our normal Monthly match, the Gold Cup and Peter Thomson Cup & Plate Finals. in that division. Please advise the Match Secretary, Neville Walker, of your
decision prior to the game.
ANOTHER DRAWN MATCH!!!!
On Sunday 19th November, 32 Nomads (16 South and 16 North) took to Mandurah Country Club like
ducks to water and again managed to do the virtually impossible by producing another nail-biting
draw.
The end result of this exciting competition was 5 wins on each side with a number of halves mixed in.
What next, you ask. Well, in order to square things up and to determine a winner of the coveted
trophy, a putting competition will take place at the conclusion of the Gold Cup game at Mosman
Park. 3 Players from both the North and South will be randomly drawn and will putt out over 3 holes.
The player with the lowest putt count over 3 holes wins. Ties will be settled with “sudden death”
putts.
The 3 results will be collated and the winning Team announced..
