Tlle H64 Ilils IIII-IllllTIIE liameswarn III IimiteusullnliesIt's been a Iong, hard wait, but on March lst Ihe Nintendo 64 finally arrives in Ihe UK, |t‘s beennearly a year since the conscle debuted in Japan and six months since it launched in the US, andnow British punters get the Chance t0 sample its awesome 64-bit power. However, there are a few dark clouds in this otherwise bright blue sky. in a recent interview,THE Games (Nintendds UKdistributor) revealed that initial N64 shipments are Iikely to be verylimited. with as few as 20.000 machines ready for launch and onIy a total of 90.000 machinesavailable within the first three months. This is unlikely to satisfy demand —indeed, THE‘s ownresearch indicates (hat over 160,000 eager punters will want t0 buy Ihe machine at Iaunch.THE also announced (hatWaveRace 64 will not be joining Super Mario 64,Pilotwings 64 andShadows Of The Empire as one of the games available at Iaunch as previously thought, and willnow debut 3»4 weeks Iater.Although nct exactly a disaster, this delay will deprive the machineof a multi-player game at launch. However, perhaps most annoying of all is (hatwhile British punters have to pay i249 for theirN645, German gamers will onIy have to fork out Dm399—roughly i155! Quite why this is thecase is unclear but we're none too chuffed about Ihe Situation, to say the least.

THE JOY OF THE N64!DMA has been quiet for the past two years‚'cos they've been busy experimenting withtheir N64 development kits and creating twogames, Body Harvest and Silicon Valley. “we'dbeen working on games for the 300,but soondiscovered that it was almost impossible to

ü‘ lllllclal IIK HIIIIIIIO

develop for,” says Stacey Jamieson, Head Artiston Body Harvest. "Because of this we werenervous about the N64 kits but, when theyarrived, we found that they were incrediblyeasy to use. In fact. ‘cos the N64 is so simple,it gives us the opportunity t0 experiment andcome up with totally new ideas."“As one of the first developers it's hard togauge how powerful the N64 is," adds AlanDavidson, an artist on Body Harvest. "However, when we experimented, we were amazed athow many poiygons the N64 could shiftwithout any slow down. The hero is ’made from over 300 polygons, yetmoves completely naturaily.“ <

MUSIC T0 YOUR EARS!Another area in which the N64 exceis issound and music. “with the N64 we cancreate interactive music, just Iike a movie,"says Ciaran Rooney, Head of Developmentfor N64 music. “With CD-based conscies theseek time is so slow that the music can'tchange instantiy when the game action alters.However. because the N64 is cart-based, itallowed us to write ambient music for BodyHarvest, tracks which can instantly becomemore sinister when an alien appears."The N64 is also ajoy to develop for becauseNintendo are always ready and wiHing to Ienda helping hand. “Nintendo are never slow toreply when we have a problem." says Brian. "Ifwe fax them a question we normally receive ananswer very quickiy. Typicaliy, other pubiishersdon't want to talk to us until the game‘s com-pletely finished, whereas Nintendo are aresource to draw on."

y WORK THAT BODYIf However, in the case of

I Body Harvest, Nintenddsadvice meant (hat DMA had to

change some aspects of the game quiteradicaiiy! “The original game was a

simple blasten" says Brian. "lt was avery Western game, and Nintendo wereworried that it mightn't appeal soajapaneseaudience. They suggested that we make thehero more Iike a Manga character, and wechanged him from a sprite in jeans and T-shirtinto a futuristic 3D warrior in a spacesuit. Also,Nintendo suggested that we add RPG elements, allowing the hero to talk to other charactersand find clues to defeating the aiiens. At theend of the day we'd be fools if we didn't takeNintendds advice. After all, this i5 the companywho developed Super Mario 64!"

The game will incorporate various camera angIes‚including an intelligent camera system which automatically selects theperfect viewpoint. lt also features a unique picture-inipicture optionwhich allows players to view a separate part of the field.

Prospects: Despite the Iatest Playstation Version being panned by mostof the press, it's worth pointing out that the N64 edition cf FIFA '97 willbe an exclusive, totaIIy-overhauled version. We‘ve been fortunate toplay an early build of the game and it was pretty impressive. If thetiming of the release coincides with Konami’s footballing treat, it's goingto be quite a battle for supremacy.
