Inefficient Packaging Operations

Increase Units Per Man Hour (UPMH) in Packaging

Page 3: NOKIA Packaging Simulation

Background of Problem

Packaging runs an inefficient operation

Personnel change due to current layoffsEmployees not settled

Previous UPMH: 26

Current UPMH: 14

Goal UPMH: 36-40 or 20% increase

Goal

Identify inefficiencies in packaging line

Try to increase UPMH

Our Theory

Combine two processes into one:Inserting literature currently done by two people

Can be done by one person in one step

Will automatically increase UPMH by eliminating one worker from the process

Simulation

Test theories to increase efficiencies in packaging line

ProModelGraphical representation of process

Run time data

Ability to reconfigure process

Page 11: NOKIA Packaging Simulation

Will work if:

Our theory line can produce the same output less than or equal to the time of the current line

One literature person can insert the literature in the allotted time

UPMH with our Model

Present line:250 entries

1hr 18 min

13 workers

=14.736 (for 1 line)

Theory line:250 entries

1hr 18 min

12 workers

=15.964 (for 1 line)

Page 14: NOKIA Packaging Simulation

Conclusions

Literature can be inserted by one person within the allotted time

Having only one literature person is more efficient

UPMH is increased by 8.33%

Page 15: NOKIA Packaging Simulation

CritiqueThere are many other ways we could have solved this problem.Through the use of ProModel we increased UPMH, but not as much as our original goals.Conflicting time schedules and distance of facility were problems.
