    1 Check your understanding

Take some time to reflect on what you have learnt during this module and

answer the following review questions to the best of your ability.

    1. On the TMN, what philosophy of management does NEMU support?

    a. Business management

    b. Service management

    c. Network wide management

    d. Network element management !!!

    2. Explain briefly the difference between the NEMU client and server. Also,

what is the role of the SMS?

NEMU server is a physical unit located in the network element which

contains the graphical applications (also takes care of OSS Mediation).

Whereas, the Client is a PC/UNIX box connected via LAN to the Server

and through JAVA launches a graphical interface. The SMS (Systems

Management Server) is an integrated software package designed to help

in management by using automation: the management tasks are done

centrally from the management site. SMS responsible for monitoring and

maintaining NEMU in the network, it can also be used for software

    distribution.

    3. Explain briefly the difference between NEMU and OMU.

NEMU manages the external interfaces to and from the LAN (incl. clients)

and the OSS through the open COBRA interface. NEMU acts as a

mediation function to the OSS and contains the graphical tools. The OMU

is responsible for the real-time maintenance and recovery of the network

element. It is also responsible for the routing of data outside the element. It

manages the BTS O&M in RNC.

    4.

    5. Which of the following is true about the EM (only one)?

    a. The EM is a standalone application used for MML.

    b. The EM contains all the customer documentation.

    c. The EM is the environment that is used to launch the NE

    connections. !!!

    d. None of the above.

    6. Which of the following is not true (only one)?

    a. The on-line help can be launched from the Application Manager.

    b. The customer documentation can be launched from the Application

    Manager.

    c. The user help can be launched from the Application Manager.

    d. The specifications can be launched from the Application

    Manager. !!!

    7. What are the differences between 2G and 3G?

In 3G, Nokia NetAct Management platform is in use, the NMS/2000

known from 2G is functionally part of the Nokia NetAct. In 3G, the

functions of the OMU have been redefined concentrating on the

maintenance of the network element itself and RNW configuration. Thecommunication between network element's OMU and NetAct is done via

    NEMU.

This chapter is optional. Therefore, please follow the trainer's guidance before

going any further. Studying this chapter is dependent on whether you have

    access to a working NEMU.

    Before you begin

To perform these exercises you need a client terminal (i.e. PC or UNIX with aconfigured Java environment and an Internet connection). Also, you will need

    the following information:

    Network element name (or address)

    User name

    Password

    Starting a NEMU session

Perform the following steps and mark with a tick those steps completed.

    1. Start the Element Manager (on PC) or launch NEMU from NetAct. t

    2. Type in user ID, password and network element as above. t

    3. Have you gained access to the Application Manager?

    element. t

    6. From the documentation, find the document that explains how to monitor

    the network element. t

    7. From the Application Manager, launch the network element MML

    manager. t

    8. From the network manager MML, try some of the common commands

(e.g. or ). If you are unfamiliar with these commands, then write down

    the results you observed. t

    9. From the Application Manager, how can you determine which

    applications are currently being run?

    Note

These tasks are only intended to motivate the participant into getting used to the

    interface.
