Presentation Notes
WiFi has taken over from Ethernet as the dominant networking technology that powers the post PC era. This year there will be over 1 billion wifi devices shipped, well over the shipment of Ethernet devices, fueling the enterprise and service provider WLAN markets. Not only is wifi the networking standard for home and enterprise. WiFi is the ideal complement to 3G, 4G and LTE for public access. Smartphone and tablet users want wifi service not only because it’s frequently faster than 3G, the termination of unlimited data plans as well as new shared data plans mean that users are going to seek out WiFi for videos and other bandwidth intensive apps. Increasingly, mobile data subscribers will demand wifi service from their providers. From operators perspective, WiFi is a very affordable solution to their capacity problem. It requires no spectrum licensing fees. WiFi access points are much lower cost than their cellular counterparts because of volume leverage from widespread home and enterprise adoption. Capacity-wise, WiFi operates at 300 to 450 Mbps today and 802.11ac, the next generation wifi standard promises to scale up to gigabit speeds. WiFi delivers the lowest $ per bit among wireless technologies and will continue to do so in the near foreseeable future.

So having lived through the shadow of WiMAX, Wi-Fi is now on a path of exponential growth. If we look at the ethernet market before it, we can see the scale of the opportunity and in fact if we stay on the current CAGR rates it will indeed hit $20B+ by 2020, up from the current ~$3B-$4B

The Only Thing that Really MattersThe signal, the PHY, the air.

It’s the foundation and the only placewhere speed and capacity can be improved.

So I am painting a pretty dreary picture for Wi-Fi….there is HUGE demand but the technology has limitations and yet no-one adresses the root cause of the issues – because its hard !!! You can do what you like with security, firewalls, cloud services, management tools etc….they are all well and good………but if you cannot make the air reliable you are re-arranging the deck-chars on the Titanitc Ruckus has spent the last 8 years focused on solving this issue. We have a Smart Antenna technology called Beamflex which we incorporate into all of our Access Points – indoor and outdoor which Focus signals (describe the light-bulb, flashlight thing) Steer the beams around interference Mitigate interference so clients can hear better Net-net is 2-4 times the coverage area per AP or just a higher PHY rate at any given location compared to any other vendor

But Wi-Fi Has Personal Issues

Presentation Notes
Coverage has always been an issue although far less so these days as capacity demands increase Which is more secure – wired or wireless ? Actually Wi-Fi because most wired connections do not require an encrypted client. Rightly or wrongly security was perceived as a problem for wi-fi – until 802.11i (known to you and I as WPA2) was finally ratified in 2004. That created the WPA2 standard which implements AES encryption. Even the NSA cannot crack AES……so you get an idea of how secure Wi-Fi is these days right ? Roaming became an issue as things like 802.11i and 802.11x created latency when moving from one AP to another. Certain apps, like VoIP, are highly sensitive to delay….some vendors even invented WLAN controller architectures specifically to support roaming but in fact the 802.11r standard resolved that in 2009…..well, never mind already Then came these things…..and since then the issues have been speed and more and more…..capacity

Whether we like it or not, Wi-Fi is inconsistent – at least in most implementations Unlicensed spectrum – free to use so everyone does - Bluetooth - Microwaves - Garage door openers - Video senders And the main culprit – other wi-fi networks A wire is typically better – uncontended, reliable, fixed…..but who wants wires ?

It’s Unruly

RUCKUS ITR PRESENTATION / BOSTON8

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Wi-Fi is a shared medium………a one to many environment and there is no explicit mechanism for deciding who speaks when For the networkers amongst you, think ethernet “hub” instead of ethernet “switch”….so there is lots of collisions, back-offs, dropped data. Imagine a conference room with 50 people all trying to have a conversation with one person and everyone trying to ask their question at the same time. Not only is it hard to even hear yourself think, everyone has to keep repeating what they already said (think dropped packets)

It’s Unclear

Dropped connections have a huge and negative impact

on business operations

Interference is a Killer!

RUCKUS ITR PRESENTATION / BOSTON9

Presenter
Presentation Notes
We call this interference of course and it is a killer Every dropped packet is the vocal equivalent of someone saying “pardon” and having to repeat what was said. What makes things worse is that in the world of Wi-Fi the recovery mechanism for interference is to drop that PHY rate, the transmission rate….think of it as talking more slowly. The downside to that is you are now even more prone to interference. Imagine trying to run between the water of a sprinkler on a lawn. If the water is interference, running more slowly is actually going to make you more prone to getting wet !!!

And New Standards Won’t Save You

o Wider channel bandwidths (80 and 160MHz)o More spatial streams (3+) o More efficient modulationo Multi-user MIMOo But limited improvement for enterprise customers

RUCKUS ITR PRESENTATION / BOSTON12

Presenter
Presentation Notes
802.11ac promises great things – lots of speed But in many respects 11ac is simply shell games – there is no more bandwidth, it simply allows multiple 20MHz channels (upto 8 of them) to be combined into one big channel. That sounds great – and it does mean any one client can have a very large pipe…….but whilst those 8 channels are tied up with one client, no-one else can use them. Its like shell games……stuff gets shuffled about but there is still only one pea !! 11ac will likely be great in home use but there is a question mark on the benefit it will bring in enterprise (think multi-AP) deployments where one AP combining channels simply means the next AP has fewer channels to choose from. The good news is 11ac will drive the client devices to 5GHz and that’s a good thing in general as even existing 11n networks will work better with more 5GHz clients.

The Key to Better Wi-Fi: SINR

oWhen faced with interference, it’s SINR that mattersoHigher SINR = Higher data rates and capacityoSo how do you get a high SINR?oYou can either increase signal or decrease interferenceoAdaptive (smart) antenna systems do both!
