Noises in Wars, Prisons, and Torture Presented by: Liliana Zermeno Manuel Zaragoza Arlen Arellano Eliab Cortes Zabrina Campos Slide 2 What is noise? At school? At home? At the store? In a car?...at war, at prisons, in torture? Let's begin Slide 3 Warfare Noise Never Ends It begins in the form of propagandas before the war has even begun. It destroys people both physically and mentally, as well as relationships between nations. It never really ends as the consequences of war revert through history. Slide 4 Before The Start Of A War Even though flyers and posters did not actually make sounds, it created war noise in the minds of the men and women that read them. create a buzz and persuade encourage people to join in whatever it is inspiring in this case joining the army to go to war. Slide 5 War noise: Harmful And Damaging Keizer claims it to be loud, indulging in horrific war cries calculated to terrify (Keizer, 82). Weapon noises can harm hearing Soldiers must bear the crying sound of those injured during battle Relationships between nations become damaged, losing trust and allies. Slide 6 War Ends But The Noise Never Ends No gun shots nor explosions at the battlefields but the noise remains - the sound of silence. War noise continues in historys textbooks, on the web, in letters, in minds, and in nightmares. Slide 7 Noise In War... The sound of war does not start nor end with the action of war. Slide 8 No noise, no violence, better punishment, and more control With no noise in a prison, inmates get more paranoid and less likely to come back. Noises in a prison will affect everyone who hears it. On example would be the Stanford Prison Experiment. PQSAO9ED NO NOISE Slide 9 Reasons to enforce NO NOISE in a prison... 1) Prisoners are in there for a reason, however, some are mistakenly taken in and hear things that can scar them. 2) A prison with no noise is a controlled prison 3) Families will feel their loved ones are safe, even if they deserve being behind bars Slide 10 Whats worse than a mistake??? With a NO NOISE law being enforced in prison, prisoners who are mistakenly taken in wont have to be violated by listening to threats, fighting, and even people being raped. Beverly Monroe, a woman sent to prison for twenty-two years and mistakenly accused for murdering her boyfriend says, Being innocent in prison is real torture, She continues, Its a lasting kind of trauma. Youre released, and you realize that it didnt just happen to youits happened to other people who have had it so much worse (How many innocent people have we sent to prison) So many people are sent to prison by mistake and have no idea what is about to go on... Slide 11 Silence is the best way to go... Many prisons lose control in the cells - By controlling noise inside a prison, a guard becomes more in charge and avoids violence between inmates -No Noise will irritate prisoners more because they lose every right to make noise or do anything that will punish them. - A prison becomes a place where a person loses their rights to everything, not just their freedom. Slide 12 Families still Matter... With a NO NOISE policy, families may feel more secured that their loved ones will be safe and still face the consequences they deserves Sometimes enemies go after family members, so with a no noise law, inmates will not hear names of their enemys family. Slide 13 Post-traumatic stress within soldiers caused by the sounds of war 1.) The effects on a soldiers hearing and their new mindset with noise. 2.) Noise changes a soldier's character they become more aggressive and within lose who they were and become a by product of ash, rubbish, shell shock, and a new profound sound of blood trickling down a from a comrads flesh. 3.) I propose that militants be made to wear more extensive protective ear plugs and that they get a full psychological evaluation once their home. 4.) I will provide personal evidence and find papers that support my point of view that noise in warfare seriously harms both sides of the battle civilians included. Slide 14 War Noise at Home Millions of soldiers still suffer from the effects of war and are still expected to live in a normal work setting. The Department of Veterans Affairs reports70,000 of the 1.3 million U.S. soldiers who have been deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan are receiving disability for tinnitus. (26) Exactly what kind of noise are our soldiers exposed to? why is nothing being done to take care of our soldiers our brothers and sisters. Ex. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNjPmhbPc9Ihttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNjPmhbPc9I Slide 15 War Noise creating Physiological and Psychological Damage Hopefully we will never have to live through the traumatic experience of warfare but for a better understanding of how the noise really feels listen : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oV3FQYeJ IQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oV3FQYeJ IQ Fear and shock absorb your body on these situations and how can you react to such a powerful force. The noise is what drives the mind to the breaking point. Our soldiers are going into the battlefield with every armament possible except on to protect a vital portion of their bodies: the ear a body part you wouldnt want to be without. Slide 16 Long term effects of War Noise From a personal view I am affected by this: war noise has taken most of my Big Brothers hearing from his left ear. He is now a married U.S. soldier but he is struggling because at his workplace he has had many accidents because he has trouble hearing the loud sounds that are around him. Military officials must take into consideration of the soldiers lives outside the Battlefield because weather they like it or not they are causing harm to their nations finest. Slide 17 Torture Noise What is torture noise? Listening to an unpleasant sound over long periods of time. Ex. Music, screams, words, commands... The use of noise as torture is done in order to obtain information. Slide 18 Torture noise causes irreversible mental problems MUSIC. According to Binyam Mohamed, a British resident tortured by or on behalf of the U.S. in Morocco, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo, his interrogators hung him in a pitch black room where [t]here was loud music, [Eminems] Slim Shady; and Dr. Dre for 20 days. Other songs reportedly used to break down prisoners include Metallicas Enter Sandman and-a favorite- Barney the Purple Dinosaur's Love You (Keizer 126-127). Slide 19 The use of noise as torture causes extreme pain More recently, Amnesty International has documented cases of torture in which the victim will incur further pain if he or she cries out (often as a result of various objects placed in the mouth), and a corresponding technique whereby prisoners are forced to communicate exclusively by shouting (Keizer 68). Ex.- earphones (having the music too loud eventually hurts your ear); Slide 20 Torture noise is inhuman and goes against our human rights Forcing people to listen to some type of noise does not respect our right to liberty and freedom. o harsh shouts, commands... Connects with pain and music. (40.17-41.10) Slide 21 Why use noise as torture? Noise has always existed and will never disappear. It is something that is heard every day. Noise something individuals dont want, which is why people have taken advantage of it in order to harm and torture. Slide 22 Manuel The greatest victims of war are the soldiers and their families. First they need better gear during war. Second, soldiers need better medical care. Finally, soldiers need government assistance over family issues. Hearing loss Tinnitus families in denial The tragic war noises Slide 23 Garret Keizer testified that, With its sulfurous smell, deafening blast, and unsurpassed killing power, the advent of gunpowder struck many as a visitation from hell (92). Keizer point out that, many veterans are affected by hearing loss from such loud gunpowder explosions. BOOM Reason One: Hearing loss Slide 24 According to What Causes Tinnitus tinnitus is caused from hearing loss, exposure to loud noises, emotional stress, and ear or head injuries (Causes). The noise that is heard because tinnitus is one of the most annoying noise that a person can hear. Just Imagine The sound they hear Reason Two: Tinnitus Slide 25 Written by an anonymous person, in Common reaction to hearing loss, it states that, Some families react like ostriches about deafness. I mean by that they try to deny that the person they love has a hearing loss. Perhaps the reality is too painful to face; perhaps they hope that if they ignore it, it will go away; perhaps they simply do not understand the implications of hearing loss. Whatever, their reasons the practical implications of their attitude makes life very difficult for a deaf person (reaction). Many dont want to accept that a family member are becoming deaf. Reason Three: families in denial Slide 26 The greatest victims of war are the soldiers and their families. They need better Protection during and after the war. Conclusion Slide 27 Noise will always exist. It is a norm in reality. Unfortunately, people have created ways to begin negative noise, harming people, relationships and majority as a whole.
