Aircraft noise has become an increasing

issue for airports and the surrounding

communities. NLR’s Noise Management

System supports its users to prevent traffic

noise exceeding the legal noise limits. This

system has been initially developed by

NLR for the Dutch Government.

To reduce the impact of aircraft noise on communities, NLR supports its customers in noise mapping, identification and prioritisation of noise abatement measures and action planning. The solutions can be of technological, operational and regulatory nature. The Noise Management System is an operational support tool to optimise air traffic in such a way that noise limits are not exceeded.

Features• Easily configurable towards airport specific properties• Generation of traffic from different sources: flight plan, extra

flights and actual flight registrations• Prediction of noise contours over a specific period of time• Calculation of partial noise contribution of different groups (e.g.

fixed wing, helicopters, operational, training, cargo, etc.)• Import of actual flight registrations and replacement of unknown

flights with alternatives• Noise calculation in monitoring points of the noise contour map• Analysis in monitoring points• Generation and graphical presentation of noise contours,

reporting facilities

PLANNINGFor a specific period of time, the user can generate traffic based on the annual flight plan, actual flights and extra flights expected for the rest of the year. The resulting noise load will be calculated using a Noise Model at virtual noise monitoring points, and compared with the legal limits. By analysing the monitoring points, flights which cause the most noise are identified. To prevent impending noise exceeding, actions can be taken in advance to stay within the legal noise limits. The user can re-plan traffic for the upcoming period and thus change noise impact, e.g. by changing schedules, runway preferences, or choosing different existing arrival or departure routes.

MONITORINGWith the Noise Management System, you can verify whether the total noise load of actual, planned and extra flights will not exceed noise limits. For every noise monitoring point the accumulated noise for all aircraft will be compared with the allowed noise in that point.

OPTIMISATIONIn order to maximize the traffic volume and minimize the noise load around the airport, the Noise Management System has an optimisation module. This module determines optimal traffic distribution over, for instance, different flight routes and runways for the traffic of the (ongoing) year.

With the Noise Management System air traffic can be planned, monitored and re-planned continuously to avoid exceeding limits set at noise monitoring points.
