Al Gore's Climate Leadership Program

Dated : 12th February 2013

To,

Dr. Sunita S. Kaushik,

Adl. Director — Education( Schools)

Govt. of NCT of Delhi

Room no. 214, Old Secretariat New Delhi — 110054

Dear Madam,

We thank your office for taking the initiative to start work towards educating the teachers and the

citizens of Delhi, on the threats emerging from Climate Change and solutions possible.

Please find attached a proposal for the implementation of the Teachers Training Program on

Climate change, both the online and seminar style of training information has been given. The

advantages of online system are many specially saving of cost, logistics , saving of travel and

convenience as it is running 24hrs.

The cost for the online program is Rs 4500 per teacher , but we are giving it free of cost to the

teachers of Delhi as the urgency of the climate change requires that message reaches the masses

expeditiously.

The foundation is thankful to your pragmatic team for the cooperation they have extended and will

try to match your expectations with actions on field.

Warm Regards,

Communication Objectives

1. To emotionally connect with Educators about the importance of a healthy living Planet.

2. To communicate the effects of Climate Change on the Physical Ecosystems and Natural

Biosphere and how these effects can be mitigated.

3. To provide a message through visual pictures that creates an impact, to make learning

interesting.

4. To help the Teachers and Students understand Climate Change as a scientific

phenomenon.

Training Strategy

The proposed strategy for teachers training and capacity building is based on active

collaboration between The Climate Project Foundation (TCPF) and State Education

Department ( SED).

Page 5: No.DE.23(455)/SchBrING0/2 5/ (413 Dated:- •) CIRCULAR

This will also help the government in realizing its goal stated as, "To create and generate

awareness amongst various stakeholders for taking appropriate measures in combating the

impact of climate change."

Stage 1. (Capacity Building Stage)

The TCPF will initially focus on training the selected teachers through workshops conducted

by its senior trainers in one of the centers where number of teachers is large and can be

assembled without much travelling or other logistic support.

The teachers will also be exposed to the teachers training so that they can provide the local

assistance and can help guide teachers in the future and they will act as an important

resource center for the teachers.

Stage 2 (Reaching Out)

The teachers in all the schools will be invited to undergo the program by registering on the

online system and do the program without travelling from their school or homes.

Physical contact sessions will be held in 3 (or 6) months at a convenient place by the TCPF

and SED to help teachers interact with the trainers in a face to face session and clear their

doubts or any other information they desire.

Cost of the Program :

The online programme is entirely free for the government teachers.

If the Governemnt desires to go for training conducted in a seminar environment ( class

room or hall ) then it will be also free, as no charge will be taken by the foundation from the

Government or the teachers. The cost of the seminar hall, refreshments, travelling cost of

teachers and public address system will have to be borne by the government.

Climate Change Presentation / Workshop Details (for Teachers Training)

Page 6: No.DE.23(455)/SchBrING0/2 5/ (413 Dated:- •) CIRCULAR

The presentation will cover the concepts of scientific facts and the effects the climate

change is causing on the living and non-living world. It will be followed with the solutions

which are possible at an individual as well as community level.

The presentation will be divided into 3 sections of about 45 Minutes each. The flow of

presentation and floor interaction can be adjusted and fine-tuned as per the audience

requirement.

The presentation is divided into the following main sections:

Science of Climate Change

In this section we will talk about the science behind climate change as it is essential for

people to understand that this is a work of science and based on facts and IPCC reports

where nearly 2,000 world's finest scientists are working on the problem. The subject will be

explained in an easy to understand way background of science is not required.

Effects of Climate Change

This section talks about the effects like rising temperatures, draughts, floods and cloud

bursts are having on the society.

Solutions for bringing change

We discuss the solutions for mitigating and adapting to the climate change. The response to

this challenge is discussed at individual, work, community and society level.

Tools for Teaching

1. A CD-ROM with presentation will be given to teachers.

2. An animated presentation for children which can be used in class.

3. Subscription to Online training for more resources.

Equipment Desired

Page 7: No.DE.23(455)/SchBrING0/2 5/ (413 Dated:- •) CIRCULAR

The presentation should be held in a room and we will highly recommend that a Digital

Projector (preferably with computer) is present, so that the presenter can attach their

Laptop to the projector. As the presentation is highly visual the impact will only come when

projection device is present.

A public address system will be necessary if the hall is big or audience is large.

Online Teachers Training Program on Climate Change (OTTP)

Page 8: No.DE.23(455)/SchBrING0/2 5/ (413 Dated:- •) CIRCULAR

The online training program has been designed to help the teachers to understand and

study the problems and solutions to climate change. The online system will be the backbone

for the training to reach participants in a cost effective manner with maximum flexibility.

The core advantages are:

1. Teachers can study at their own pace while doing regular duty at the school. As

humans are diverse some are fast learners and some take time. The online system

offers the slow learners to also study at a comfortable pace.

2. The need for travel and cost associated with it, is not there.

3. The effectiveness of the training is more as large contact programs and classrooms

makes it difficult for the participants to interact with the trainer.

4. The instruction is delivered in a high quality monitored environment with all the

teachers receiving same instructions without communication getting distorted.

5. Instructor driven model will help teachers in participate and ask questions.

6. Cost of delivery will be low.

Online models of education are today the most important way to go forward has been

reinforced by India's premier central university IGNOU with its resounding success. So we

also feel that we are reducing our carbon footprint and also increasing effectiveness of

learning by going on this strategy.

The Process

The process of the online training is given to have a better understanding of how it will

happen.

Step 1.

Teacher goes to the website of the TCPF

www.tcpf-india.org

Step 2,

Teacher goes to the REGISTRATION page and fills the form

Step 3.

Page 9: No.DE.23(455)/SchBrING0/2 5/ (413 Dated:- •) CIRCULAR

Teacher gets her USER id and PASSWORD from the online system and is also informed of the

date of the program starting.

Step 4.

Teacher logs into the program when the course begins and completes the training in 14 or

less days.

Step 5.

Teacher prints an online certificate on completion.

Step 6.

Physical certificate and other training materials are mailed.

TCPF and SED can organize a physical meet once in 3 or 6 months in a district headquarter

where the online participants who would like to have a physical peer to peer interaction can

come and participate.

Content Details

The content of the training is divided into three blocks each

1. Science of Climate Change

2. Impacts of Climate Change

3. Solutions

The structure of each chapter is as following :

A. Multimedia animation film explaining the concepts of about 5-10 minutes duration

each. Each section will have 2 — 4 films.

B. A small article to read 2-4 pages.

C. Quiz on the concepts learned to test the knowledge.

D. External links to more information on the subject.

Brief Profile: The Climate Reality Project India

The Climate Reality Project India is the Indian branch of Nobel Laureate and former Vice

President Al Gore's climate change leadership program founded in June 2006.

As a program of the Alliance for Climate Protection, Climate Reality's mission is to educate

the public about the harmful effects of climate change and to work toward solutions at a

grassroots level worldwide.

The Climate Reality Project India being an independent chapter of this international

organization, was established in March 2008 with the help of Al Gore and Dr. R K Pachauri.

This year, apart from continuing to expand our climate change presentations, our agenda

will include developing new content on Indian solutions, developing a rural awareness

program and working with teachers to take the message deeper into classrooms.

The Climate Reality Project supports more than 3,600 diverse and dedicated volunteers

internationally. TCP Presenters have delivered 70,000 presentations and have reached a

combined global audience of more than 7.3 million.

Presentations are customized and frequently revised to include the latest climate science

and can be requested free of charge by any size group or organization.

On 15th September 2012 new information material was released by the Project and was

watched online by more than 16 million people worldwide.

The salient goals of Climate Reality Project are:

1. To raise awareness about the urgency of the climate crisis. We hope to motivate

individuals to become active participants in solving the climate crisis.

2. Training a diverse range of citizens from numerous geographic regions and walks of life

to communicate the science and impacts of climate change.

3. Engaging the public through presentations, news media, individual conversations, and

grassroots advocacy and activism so that they will make informed choices about public

policy matters related to climate change.

Page 33: No.DE.23(455)/SchBrING0/2 5/ (413 Dated:- •) CIRCULAR

4. Promoting local, domestic and global initiatives to solve the climate crisis.

Climate Reality presentations are available free of charge for public engagements of any

size.

We offer our friends to join us, and listen to our presenters, who have been specially trained

by Nobel Laureate Al Gore to spread this urgent message to the masses, so the destructive

path we are on can be corrected.

To know more about The Climate Reality Project, please go through our websites or get in

touch with us.
