Story ofStory of SafanaSafana bintbint HatimHatim TaiTaiSafana daughter of Hatim Tai was takenprisoner by the Muslims.When she sees the Holy Prophet (s) shesays: ‘O Muhammad [s], my father has diedand my brother has fled. So if you see fit,free me and let me not be the target of theevil tongues of the Arabs. For my fatherused to free the slaves, look after theneighbors, feed people, spread the salaam,and help people in difficult times’.

Safana daughter of Hatim Tai was takenprisoner by the Muslims.When she sees the Holy Prophet (s) shesays: ‘O Muhammad [s], my father has diedand my brother has fled. So if you see fit,free me and let me not be the target of theevil tongues of the Arabs. For my fatherused to free the slaves, look after theneighbors, feed people, spread the salaam,and help people in difficult times’.

The Holy Prophet (s) replies; ‘Those are thequality of believers’.Then he turned to the Muslims and said:Free her, for her father loved MakarimulAkhlaq (noble manners)

Safana was sent back to her brother withrespect and dignity. Later she tells herbrother, Adi bin Hatim Tai, about thegreatness of the Holy Prophet (s). He comesto Madina, and eventually accepts Islam.

been granted the good of the world and theHereafter.

2) If Gentleness was a creation, there wouldnot be anything that Allah, the Mighty, theExalted, has created better than it.

3) Gentleness is not placed on anything exceptthat it beautifies it, and it is not removedfrom anything except that it disgraces it.

ولو كنت فظا غليظ القلب ◌ رحمة من الله لنت لهم فبما كلوح نوا مفضلان ◌ مله رفغتاسو مهنع ففاع

وشاورهم في الأمرThus it is due to mercy from Allah that youdeal with them gently, and had you beenrough, hard hearted, they would certainlyhave dispersed from around you; pardonthem therefore and ask pardon for them,and take counsel with them in the affair;

Sura Aale Imran, verse 159ولو كنت فظا غليظ القلب ◌ رحمة من الله لنت لهم فبما

ضفاخو نم كعبن اتمل كاحنجننيمؤالمAnd lower your wing for him who follows youof the believers.1) lower your wing for others, stoop down.2) support others but with humbleness,

kindness, love . . .3) go down to the level of people. Not

everybody thinks the way you do.

Gentleness in today’s generationGentleness in today’s generation- gentleness was considered as a refinement

of character. Is it so valued now?

- gentleness is not weakness. It is active,while weakness is passive. It is sometimeslooked down upon these days as it isthought to be a sign of weakness.
