You will see from the articles in this edition of our newsletter that the past few months have been extremely hectic. Inevitably the articles here reflect

the huge variety of trips and activities that have been going on, but alongside these we have obviously still been running the day job! Our Year 11 pupils have completed their examinations and many of our Year 10 and even Year 9 pupils have also been taking external examinations. I know that they worked hard for these exams and I am looking forward to seeing the results in August.Sadly, as always at this time of year, we have to say goodbye to a number of staff who are moving on. Two of our Leadership Team are retiring at the end of this term. Mr. Denison started at Noadswood as Head of P.E. in 1986 and Mr. Mittell has been Deputy Head at Noadswood since 2000. Together they have seen thousands of pupils successfully through the school. We wish them the very best for a well-earned retirement and, of course our best wishes also go with all of the staff who are moving on.

Piam Brown WardSeven students went to

Southampton General to give less fortunate children a huge cheque and 4 game consoles. When we arrived at the ward we were greeted by Jane, who is in charge of the charity side of the ward. She gave us an introduction to the ward and told us that this ward was named after one of their patients. Piam was in for about 10 weeks before he unfortunately passed away. His parents were generous enough to give the ward an extremely large amount of money, so much so, that they were able to extend the size of the ward. They

now have 10 beds, a playroom, a schoolroom and anaesthetic room. After the introduction, we presented them with the cheque and games. Then we visited the schoolroom to find a few patients including James Wells, an ex-student at Noadswood School. We were given a tour of the ward and played on the consoles with the children before saying our goodbyes and returning to Noadswood. So once again, thank you to all of those who raised the money for this ward. I know that Piam’s parents are still funding 2 nursing wards and we can possibly raise even more money next year!

Rotary clubThe Rotary Club of Hythe and Waterside

supports charities and good causes locally, nationally and internationally. John Samuels, ex-Headteacher of Noadswood and Rotary club President for 2010 to 2011, wanted to mark his year in office by supporting a school in South Africa and, given the existing links between Noadswood and Sefoloko schools, it was felt that raising funds towards a new science laboratory at Sefoloko would be an ideal project. The Rotary Beaulieu Sponsored Walk, on June 12, was an opportunity for people to raise money jointly for their own chosen charities and Rotary causes. Despite appalling weather the walk was very well supported and raised in excess of £6,000 for a range of charities including Sefoloko. Noadswood students acted as walk marshals as well as collecting sponsors and walking themselves. This was the first time the Rotary Beaulieu Walk had been organised and its success will ensure its future as an annual charity fund-raising event. The club wish Noadswood students a successful and fulfilling visit to Sefoloko, and look forward to hearing of the progress of the Sefoloko Science laboratory.

Sefoloko visit 2011The visit to Sefoloko High School is now all planned and

organised. The 14 students who were lucky enough to have been chosen for the trip have worked hard for the past 9 months to raise the money required for the trip. We have seen lots of car washing taking place in and around the local area along with a whole variety of sponsored events. Staff and students at Noadswood have been treated to lots of cake sales and we even saw a group of girls arrange a very successful year 7 disco. The students were all involved in a sponsored walk around Beaulieu for the local Rotary club who had chosen Sefoloko High School as their charity for the year. Their aim was to raise enough money to be able to build a new science laboratory at the school. We hope to be able to take a cheque out to the school in July to be able to pay for this. The trip will see staff and students spending time in and around the Sefoloko High School and give us the opportunity to see how school life is different. We all want to see what we can learn from the South African school life to bring back to Noadswood. The aim is that each student will concentrate on a different curriculum area to see how we can use ideas that we pick up back here at Noadswood. Everyone is very much looking forward to the trip and deserves the reward after their hard work over the past few months. We all look forward to being able to share our experience and photos in the next newsletter.Miss Barrett and Miss Rawlinson

At the annual New Forest Athletics competition held at Bournemouth Athletics stadium Noadswood School A Sports

College set a school record of seven of the available trophies on the day. There were some outstanding individual and team performances resulting in over 30 athletes being selected to represent the New Forest Team at the next round. The Year 7 girls relay team had the fastest qualifying time for the 4x100m relay and then went on to win the trophy in the final. The rest of the Year 7 girls team also had another 1st place and four 2nd places giving them 1st place in the overall girls competition. The Year 7 boys had three 1st places and two 2nd places which gave them 2nd place but together with the girls resulted in them getting the Year 7 overall trophy. The U15 girls and boys had some fantastic individual performances with three 1st places a 2nd and four 3rd places. The U17 girls for the 4th year in a row won their age group with five 1st places and two 3rd places and they also won their relay giving the girls team 2 trophies. The boys also had a successful day winning 4 of the events and coming 2nd in 2 events giving them the overall trophy as a boys team for the 4th year in a row. With the success of both teams they also won the overall U17 trophy. This was the most successful year the Noadswood team has ever had at this event. They are looking forward to improving on this again

Gymnasts at Rosebowl

At the Hampshire Olympic Legacy conference held at the Rosebowl on 22nd June Noadswood were able to shine

again as their elite squad of 24 girls ranging from Year 7 to 11 performed their gala routine to a range of delegates from primary and secondary schools in Hampshire. The conference was aimed at all teachers to inspire our young people about what the 2012 Olympics means and how it can be used as a tool to help learning across the curriculum. Ex Noadswood student Robyn Smith who now sits on the National Steering group for Young Ambassadors opened the conference and introduced Steve Backley to the conference delegation. Steve did a great job of telling his Olympic story and then spent some time with a small group of Young Ambassadors (a group of students who have a specific role in their schools to promote the Olympics and increase participation) giving them advice on how to achieve their goals and he also answered questions that they had.. The day was a huge success with Noadswood performing their routine times, teaching staff from the school running network tables to share ideas and Ambassadors new and old taking a lead role in this prestigious County event.

right direction the show all came together. On the Monday we welcomed in around 250 people from the local junior schools who all seemed to enjoy the performance. It was great for the cast and crew to have a dress rehearsal to a full audience as it allowed them to get a feel as to what it would be like on the opening night. This was especially good as a lot of our cast this year had not been in a show before and so did not know quite what to expect. The opening night was very busy on the door with close to a full house, a terrific achievement. The show was fantastic with everyone doing their best. We then went from strength to strength with the rest of our performances

Months of hard work and commitment from over 50

students paid off back in March when Noadswood School opened its doors to the annual school production. Grease was our production of choice this year as we wanted to do a show that everyone knew and could join in with. We had been working on the show from before Christmas when the auditions were held. When we returned to school in January we got started on transforming Noadswood students into Rydell High School students. All of the people involved got stuck in and worked very hard to put the show together. A couple of weeks before the opening night it was touch an go as to whether we would be ready but after a push in the

and well and truly had the show perfected by the last night. On the final show we had great fun with the audience at the end getting them all up and joining in with all of their Grease favourites and we saw the hall have a great sing-a-long. This was the final show for lots of our year 10’s who will not be in the show next year due to their exam commitments and so we would like to say a big thank you to them for all of their time over the past few years, you will be missed. We hope to be back next year with yet another fantastic show, although I do worry that Grease will be quite hard to top! Miss Barrett and Mrs Gunton

Activities Week London

Activity week is something special, offering new

experiences and fun activities for students and staff to share. It began on Monday 8th June, when Miss Humphries, Mrs Taylor, Miss Lancaster and myself were timetabled for various activities within school and organised trips. Mrs Taylor assisted with many creative sessions, making keyrings, coasters and phone charms which gave her the opportunity to work with wood, metal and acrylic using the Laser 2D design. Her ability to use a coping saw and hacksaw was greatly improved and I am pleased to confirm that all fingers and thumbs are still intact! Mrs Taylor was also involved in the T shirt painting sessions and although she thoroughly enjoyed working with the students on this, we have yet to see her own creation! Miss Humphries, Mrs Taylor and I oversaw different sessions of self defence, watching students learn and practice useful techniques. We agreed afterwards that the suppleness of youth prevails and would not like to bet on our own chances. On Wednesday, Miss

Humphries, Miss Lancaster and I supported the trip to Splashdown. The air of excitement on the coach was tremendous. It was a fantastic opportunity for our young people to have fun together, dropping from winding flumes into a deep pool, while others watched them scramble to the surface with gleaming dripping faces. I also assisted on the Thursday Splashdown trip and again it was a pleasure to see our students enjoying the flumes and sprays. On Thursday evening we eagerly watched the weather forecast as the next day was Chessington Day. It wasn’t looking good. On Friday the sky was heavy with rain clouds but we tried to remain positive. The journey there was dotted with mini rays of sunshine and our hopes began to rise. We arrived at the theme park and waited for our tickets, anticipating the thrill of the rides. The tickets came and so did the torrential rain, battering us, all of us, like no ride in the park could match. As soaked bodies manoeuvred from one place of shelter to another, the young faces were still full of excitement

and hope. Ours, not being quite so young expressed a slightly different emotion. After about an hour of thunder, lightning and clouds unforgivingly emptying their load the sun broke through, just enough. We watched wide eyed, open mouthed faces and heard the screams of our students as we wandered through the theme park, some laden with gigantic prizes and lollies. We agreed to rendezvous with our students at a prearranged time and place to take a register, check that all was well and reconfirm our meeting up time for departure. Despite the weather, the day had been a success. Fortunately most had dried off before embarking the coach for the return trip. With energy supplies exhausted the journey home was somewhat quieter and we arrived back at Noadswood school at 7.15pm. We all agreed it was great to see the students enjoying the activities, being creative, taking part and working in teams.. Needless to say we had a great time too. We’re looking forward to Activity Week 2012.

Activities Week London

I think that this year activity week was the best it has ever been. We had to choose 2 day

trips to go on as well as doing fun activities in school. I chose to go to London and to Chessington World of Adventures. The London trip was to the Science museum, London Eye and included a cruise on the Thames. The cruise was my favourite bit because we got to see lots of famous landmarks as well as some more unusual sights such as buildings where films had been set and a small monument which marked the boundary between the city of London and Westminster. On our London trip we were quite lucky with the weather but at Chessington it was a different story. We survived thunder and torrential rain but still managed to have a good time. The in school activities included cheerleading, self-defence and t – shirt designing. In cheerleading we were taught a routine and then went off in small groups to produce a lift. I felt quite proud as my group hoisted me into the air and I managed to land on my feet when I came down again! The t – shirt design workshop involved choosing and cutting out a stencil and then using spray paint to put it onto the t – shirt. The paint had a really strong smell and we had to be very careful when using it as it was difficult to clean off if you went wrong or got it on your clothes. We all went away with a unique t – shirt at the end.All in all it was an action packed week and a welcome change from our normal timetables. Thank you to all the staff who made this possible!

“I loved Kayaking it was soooo fun, but relaxing”

BudeFor Activity Week this year, Year

7 made the traditional journey to North Cornwall for a week of fun at Adventure International activity centre in Bude. 144 pupils were divided into twelve teams of 12 and spent the week; kayaking, surfing, body boarding, dragon boat racing, climbing, abseiling, mountain boarding, caving and solving puzzles on a team trail. Evenings were spent in all manner of entertainments, from Karaoke to a Fancy Dress disco which was won this year by Sorel Smith-Peterson and Annabelle Wingate, who beat pupils from 4 other schools dressing as the runners from 118 118 ads.Though we had some showers the weather was pretty kind to us and all the activities went ahead as planned, with pupils learning new skills and conquering past fears.

During Activity Week the Design Technology department was

making keyrings, phone charms and photo frames by recycling left over pieces of wood, metal or acrylic plastic. Pupils had one and a half hours to design and make

something small and functional / decorative either for them or as a present for someone else. Many creative ideas were produced and cut by hand using workshop equipment or using Computer Aided Design and the laser cutter.

Wee

k This year for Activity Week I was in school and then involved in a couple of day trips. I

do think that activity week is a great opportunity to do things that you do not do everyday as a teacher, and as someone who teaches mainly upper school, I just love the way that it gives you an opportunity to meet the younger students. Each year I look forward to activity week, whether it is going on a residential trip or the staying in school, I do always see it as a bit of a treat. As one of the teachers who has stayed in school for the past two years, I think it was evident to see that the students in and around school really appreciate the week. There was a massive change in the attitude of the students from last year to this and they all seemed much happier about the mixed classes and what they were doing in school. The mufti for the week really helps to promote the relaxed environment around school. I think that this is evidence that vertical tutor groups have really made a positive impact on the school. In terms of the lessons in activity week I always think that it is important to offer something that would not be available through the usual curriculum and so in ICT we always try to offer something new and exciting that they students will not have seen before. This year I was also very happy that I introduced a slightly competitive angle into my lessons which the students really responded well to and helped them to get engaged in what they were doing. I went on two trips in the week, the first was to London where we went to the science museum. This was good but only fairly short, I think that the students enjoyed this visit but could have really done with a couple of hours in there. From here were moved to the embankment where

we took a riverboat cruise. I think that this is great for the students as they get to hear lots about the history of London and see lots of very famous landmarks, only problem was that the heavens decided to open and so we had to move inside. After this we went onto the London eye and the sun came out so had wonderful views over London. We took around 65 students on this trip and they all seemed to have a wonderful day.On Friday I was then lucky enough to go to Chessington. Being a fan of theme parks, I was looking forward to this. Once again we got a soaking as we arrived but nobody seemed to mind as it meant that we could go straight onto Mr Bubbles Waterworks and not mind getting wet! There were lots of teachers in Chessington on that day and so use ride goers disappeared and had a great day, we even met a new friend who accompanied us onto many of the rides! One of the highlights had to be the faces of Mr Crowley and Mr Monso as they came off Dragon’s Fury, and there was us thinking that the men could handle the rides! I always think that one of the nicest things about Activity Week as a member of staff is the fact that you get to mix with other teachers that on a day to day basis you just don’t have time to talk to. I think that this is fantastic for staff morale and an important part of school life here at Noadswood. To summarize the week I would say that it is a great opportunity for both staff and students to experience different things and get to know each other outside of the normal classroom environment and I think that this is a great thing for Noadswood school. Miss Barrett

Year 10 Careers DayOn June 22nd 2011 from P1 -4 all our students took part in a Careers Day which meant they were given the option of visiting our local colleges, Totton, Brockenhurst and Sparsholt to have a look at the colleges, generally receive some basic information on the types of courses they can offer and to meet the staff there. A small group were given the option to

visit Ferny Croft to take part in two outdoor education activities which would test their courage and team building skills. We also had the pleasure of a presentation from two students from Oxford University who spent time explaining in detail what life is all about at University. This included details of how to acquire student loans, money worries,

coping with University life, meeting new friends, finding accommodation (on and off campus), finding part –time jobs and how they both enjoy the learning opportunities on their programmes. Their message was if you work hard enough and you have aspirations to go to University – don’t give up and apply to some of the top universities in the country – you can do it!

In May 2011, Noadswood Staff were fortunate enough to be involved in a week long

residential with Bobby Shaddox from High Tech High (HTH) in San Diego. HTH is best known for their project-based learning (PBL). These are group projects, which culminate in a public presentation, which are at the heart of the curriculum. They are regarded as one of the most innovative schools in the USA, receiving over 1000 visitors a year, with 99% of their students going onto university. They are a school of particular interest to Noadswood, as we are ourselves have been piloting a new curriculum design in humanities called Navig8. Navig8 is an enquiry and project based learning programme, in which the main purpose is to progressively give students responsibility for their own learning – both process and content and outcome. Bobby is a humanities teacher from HTH and is at the forefront of HTH’s innovative approach. During his trip, Bobby worked alongside both staff and pupils to share good practise and to help the humanities team evaluate and plan our own project and enquiry based curriculum for September. It was a fantastic CPD opportunity for colleagues and allowed Noadswood staff to show case what we have achieved this year. Both schools benefited greatly from this collaborative week and plan to work together in the next academic year. Bobby himself commented that:

comes to NoadswoodSan Diego

I had an invigorating and inspiring time working with the teachers in the Y7 Navig8 project during my week at Noadswood. Their enquiry-based approach to learning definitely connected with what we do here at High Tech High in San Diego, California. I was struck by the idea of students forming enquiries and structuring the learning around them. In the fall, my students will be publishing a book about San Diego based on their enquiries. Our ultimate goal is to share this work with the Y7s at Noadswood. I look forward to a continued relationship between our two schools.”

In June, two coaches of intrepid Year 9 students journeyed to a

tiny hamlet in the south of France, known as Hameau Les Ages. The girls stayed in an old school house and the boys in an old house and vinery. We spent the week trying new and adventurous activities, ranging from windsurfing to zip wires and canoeing to body zorbing…This is where co-operation comes in handy – canoeing. As we drifted down the river in 2 or 3 manned canoes, we saw Madonna’s holiday castle and Hogwarts, finally ending at the Spanish border. If you think you’ve been on a good bike ride, you haven’t seen anything yet. Whilst riding an 8 mile cycle, through the hot, French countryside, we had a brilliant time Windsurfing was a breeze, or not in some cases. When the wind really kicked in, the skills of Year 9 really shone. Imagine being trapped inside a beach ball… This is a bit like body zorbing! Hard

to move, easy to master when you know how and extremely hilarious!Trapeze – a terrifying leap of faith from 9m pole. This definitely tested people’s fears as one of the most nerve wracking activities. The time to relax came when we went for excursion. Seeing the sights of the markets, smells of the cheeses and tastes of the strawberries really calmed us from a week of terror. We also visited two hypermarkets which were more than huge! The zip wire was high, nerve racking but on top of all else, breath taking. Being one of the most exhilarating experiences, you had to enjoy it, scared or not. Flour and water don’t mix well as we found out in Robot Wars. Teamwork was required when picking out your robot and robot protection before a fierce battle commenced. A fun evening!

The day trip to Calais and Boulogne was an amazing

experience! We asked a few of the many people that went and they said it was brilliant or that it was a once in a lifetime trip. The coach journey to Dover wasn’t very long and had facilities on it. Unfortunately. the ferries made us feel nauseous but fortunately there were loads of shops and a café on board so we were kept well occupied. When the ferry ride was over, we went to make croissants and bread in a “boulangerie” which was really fun. First we made croissants and shaped them into curly moons, but we couldn’t take them home because they would have taken 3 hours to cook! Then we made some bread and got to play with the squashy dough. For lunch

we each had a pain au chocolat, which was a croissant as well as an ordinary croissant. After lunch, we went to the beach in Boulogne. The sand was lovely and smooth with not many stones in Boulogne. The sand was lovely and smooth with not so many stones and the sea was warm. Most of us went in the water to paddle. We finished the day by going to a hypermarket, which had many shops such as H&M, New Look, Zara, Claires Accessories and even a Disney store! It was just like West Quay apart from the stalls which sold souvenirs of France. We spent a couple of hours there before heading back to the coach, then the ferry terminal. We spoke some French like Bonjour, Au Revoi, S’il vous plait, Merci and the occasional Je Voudrais!

France Ski Trip 2011Thirty six pupils and staff spent a

week skiing and snowboarding at Valloire which is a very traditional French village in the Southern Alps, France, at the beginning of the Easter Holidays. After a very quiet and peaceful 18 hour journey, we arrived in Valoire in blazing sunshine. We were staying at the Hotel Plein Sud, which gave us a very warm welcome and proved to be a good base for the trip, with pleasant rooms and good food throughout the week. Snow conditions were not excellent during the week, due to

the unexpectedly high temperatures – 23 degrees at 2000 metres, and 32 degrees at the bottom of the gondola in the valley! However, with our excellent Instructors, we were able to move around the slopes and make the most of the good snow higher up the mountain. The pupils spent four hours a day with their Instructors, and all then had the opportunity of joining a small group for a further hour with Mr Shearsmith leading the advanced group, Mr Rowling the snowboarders and Miss Ward and Mr. Monso with the rest

of the skiers. Skibound organized a range of evening activities for us – quiz, disco, pizza evening, games night and a presentations evening when the Instructors handed out certificates and badges to the pupils in recognition of all their hard work during the week. Overall, we had a fantastic week, and we would like to thank the whole group for making it so successful – their excellent behaviour on the coach, in the hotel, and on the slopes was second to none.

Year 8 Germany Trip 2011It was a normal Tuesday morning

in the heart of Dibden Purlieu, but for a lucky 47 pupils this was about to become an adventure they would never forget, because for the next 13 hours they would be driving in a coach to Germany. We had spent 3 hours on the road in Britain when we finally reached the Euro Tunnel; it was then a 30 minute train journey until we reached Calais, France. We then spent 6 more hours on the coach, with a break every 2 hours, until we finally made it to our hotel, which was based with a pleasing view over the river Rhine. We had some refreshing dinner then headed off to bed. The next day we were up to have breakfast and make lunch

and saw how high up we were compared to all the rivers below. We then headed back to the hotel, where some people went to the supermarket, some swam in the hotel’s pool and some just rested before dinner. Later we had dinner and moved back upstairs to get ready for a trip to an historic wine museum. This was very interesting. We got the chance to hear all about wine making and also got to try some grape juice. Then the owner of the wine museum pulled out his bugle and played it for us. Some of us also had a go at playing it.The next day was Thursday and we set off to the ancient village of Rüdesheim. We had an excellent tour around a small music museum,

and then we headed towards the Deutsches Eck. This is where the river Rhine and river Mosel meet. We also saw some old parts of the Berlin Wall there. Then we headed towards a shopping centre where we had some free time and lots of people bought sunglasses. After this we were off once more, this time to Marksburg Castle, where we had an interesting tour and found out about torture devices from the past. After the tour we had a lovely hot chocolate. We were then back on the road to go and see the Loreley Rock. This is all to do with a legend about a mermaid who was in love with a sailor, who didn’t return her love and so she jumped to her death from the rock. We looked around

Year 8 Germany Trip 2011with instruments that played themselves. We then headed out of the museum and the teachers once again let us go around this lovely town with our friends. Later on in the day we headed towards an old gem mine, where we found some beautifully shaped gems. We got the chance to buy some and then we headed back for dinner. After we got back and had had tea, we had just 20 minutes to get ready for an evening in the Kellerbar, where we chatted, played cards and other games whilst listening to music and eating crisps. It was very exciting knowing that the next day, for most of us, would be the best day of the tour. Once more we were up in the

morning making our lunch before setting off to Cologne for the day. We headed for the cathedral. When we got inside, we saw exactly how many steps we would have to climb to reach the top of the tower! For us all, it would be a big challenge. After half an hour we made it to the top, and what an amazing view - we could see the whole of Cologne, it was beautiful. We then headed down and by the time we got to the bottom, peoples legs were trembling, hearts were racing, and eyes were spinning with dizziness due to the long winding staircase. After we exited the cathedral we were given time to shop in Cologne, where there was everything you could ever want. There were some great musicians outside and lots of street magic. It was great for us all. After lunch we headed towards the Lindt Chocolate Factory. We had an amazing tour and our guide was

ever so friendly. We then headed towards the chocolate fountain, which looked like something out of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. We were all given a wafer dipped in chocolate and then we headed towards the tour guide, who encouraged us to go back three or four more times. We then got the chance to shop inside the Lindt shop, which was excellent, with towers of chocolate and massively oversized Lindt chocolate bunnies. As we headed back to the hotel we were all in a good mood. When we got back it was time for dinner and partying, with lots of dancing going on all evening. We all celebrated the trip. The next morning we headed back. Finally I think everybody who went on the Germany trip would like to say a big thank you to the teachers who organised this amazing trip.

We are all very pleased to say that all of our year 10 students have

successfully completed their work experience from June 6th to June 17th. The students worked at various placements ranging from John Lewis. to more local shops and places such as, The Shaw Garage, The Croft, Esso, The Heath, our feeder schools, Orchard Junior, Orchard Infant., Wildground Primary school, Tesco’s, Calshot Outdoor Activity Centre and many others. Some of our students have also been offered part –time jobs to do voluntary work, or paid part time work once they are at an eligible age wise. Our students have been an absolute credit to our school, yourselves as parent/carers and most of to themselves. Each student will receive a report from their respective employer which they will need to keep for their future applications to colleges or employment. As this year group near their final year in school it is important that the students keep any of their certificates of achievements or reports in a safe place. In order to do this students can purchase a Record Of Achievement Folder from Mrs Drabble in the Finance room for £2 which has a number of plastic pages in order to keep their reports etc flat and clean. I did have the pleasure of visiting our eight students who completed their work experience at Esso. Our thanks to Margaret Whyte, School Liaison Manager for organising their work placements and thanks also to all the staff who helped to supervise our students on a day to day basis. I also enjoyed watching six of our students complete a presentation using on their experiences at Esso, Sam Curtice, Matthew McDonald. It was really interesting to listen to their personal experiences whilst working at the plant and seeing it from their perspective. All did very well bearing in my how nerve racking i can be reporting in front of so

many staff. Well done all of you.My huge thanks to all the staff who helped me to organise their work experience placements, their tutors, House Leaders. House Learning Guidance Leaders, Gordon Lewis our Connexions representative and particular thanks to Jill Vickary from Solent Skill Quest, (from Education Business Partnership) who co –ordinated it all. In the October students will have their last Careers Day when they will be given the opportunity to listen to more in depth talks on courses at each of the local colleges, as well as meet representatives from local Industry, for example Esso. It will also be an opportunity for students to find out more about Apprenticeships and finding full time employment. There will also be a Careers Evening on October 13th from 5pm to 7pm for both parent/carers and students to attend in the main hall. In anticipation of the fact that our students will need to have an interview with a future member of staff at college, or for a job I will be organising a ‘ mock interview ‘ evening so they are able to practice these skills with a number of experienced and valued colleagues and representatives from all areas of Industry, including from the Forces, our local colleges and many more. This will take place on Tuesday November 22nd from 6pm to 8pm at school. The expectation is that all year 11 students will take part in this. In preparation for this ‘ step ‘ into working life, students will need to ensure they start to collate all their certificates for any achievement, any awards, any certificates gained from within school or any clubs outside in the local community and as they near the Spring term their last progress report. Students can purchase a record of achievement file from Mrs, Drabble in the Finance office for £2 which has a number of plastic ‘ pages ‘ in it so students can put these record/reports in there in order to keep them clean and flat.

“I will miss the hectic pace of life within the department, the fantastic support I have had from many teachers across the school, the wonderful support of colleagues within the department but most of all, the children”

Mrs. Treble joined Noadswood as Special Educational Needs Co-

ordinator (SENCo) in April 1995, Just over 16 years ago, from a school in Wiltshire. At that time, the support given to pupils with SEN was mostly on a one-to-one basis within a few lessons only. The range of support availaible now is much wider. Over the last 16 years the Learning Support Department has grown and grown, both in the numbers of staff (now 26 in the department) and the numbers and range of special needs supported. The department supports pupils with learning and visual difficulties, those with specific learning difficulties including dyslexia and those who find all areas of learning within main stream school difficult. “It has been a challenge to understand the wide range of needs and to try to ensure that all the pupils with SEN have their needs met, but a challenge I have thoroughly enjoyed” -Mrs.Treble.

The Learning Support Department has a proud record of success recognised by various LEA and

OFSTED inspections as well as other local schools and our own parents. “Our main aim has been to encourage full participation for children, whatever difficulties, in all aspects of learning and school life, whilst also encouraging as much

independence as possible” - Mrs. Treble. The LSAs (Learning Support Assistants), under Mrs. Treble’s guidance, support children with special needs in every subject, at all levels. A tall order. Mrs. Treble is

full of praise for the LSAs tireless work towards achieving that goal. She said “The team spirit in the department has always been one of our greatest strengths”. Mrs.Treble trained as a biology teacher in the 1970s and then

retrained to work with pupils with SEN after having some time at home with her three children. At Noadswood she has taught some Science, English and a little geography but mainly maths over the

Over the summer term some year 9 pupils have been completing

their Language Leader Award. This has given them the chance to go into local junior schools and teach younger pupils Spanish or German. So far they have visited Wildground, Waterside and Hythe and all visits have proved very successful! Pupils have also been using their language skills to teach warm up sessions in PE and starters to year 7 and 8 MFL pupils. This week the year 9s have been running the inter-house competitions for MFL and at the end of term they will also be getting involved in Sports Day. The language Leader award is an excellent way of incorporating language skills within Leadership and Teaching. Here are some pupil comments:

“I enjoyed the course because I developed new skills and became more confident in front of people”

“The whole MFL course is amazing. I have had an great experience, considering I want to teach primary school kids when I leave university”

Last Term the Design & Technology Department was pleased to

welcome back an ex-student who had requested some help with a project.Peter Loader (who achieved an A grade at GCSE) is at Brock College studying A-Level Design & Technology. For his A2 piece he wanted to design and make a large-scale learning aid to help pupils learn about Mechanisms. Throughout the design process he was in consultation via e-mail with Mrs McNulty, drawing on her teaching and design expertise to help develop the most effective solution. The finished outcome was a giant digger toy which demonstrated several different mechanisms; such as gears and levers. The learning aid was intended to be able to be fully dismantled and re-assembled by pupils of a Y6/Y7 age group. Peter needed his finished product to be tested in use before he could write an Evaluation, so he enlisted the help of the Tech Clubbers. Several of them had fun building the digger and then trying out the mechanical parts. The may have taken his request to “test it to destruction” a bit too literally! It was nice to see someone using and developing the skills learned at Noadswood in a wider context. Peter hopes to go to University next year to study Architecture.

Tech Club 2010 / 2011This year in D&T we have been

running a brand-new after school club. Eleven pupils from Year 7 and 8 have been mak-ing a wide range of products. They started by drawing a set of plans or downloading them from the Internet. Two pupils just brought in photos of cars, which stretched Mrs McNulty’s ingenu-ity! They then ordered materials and started to make. Most of the Tech Clubbers are now work-ing on their electronics skills by making a “steady-hand” game. None of these projects would have been possible without the great team of Tech-Leaders who come along each week to help the pupils develop their D&T skills and their confidence in the workshop. Many thanks go to: Madge Pointer, Ian Widdell, Simon Audoire, Jack Swainston, Leanne Wheeler and Lauren Harfield.

So far the following projects have been completed:

•A nativity manger by Jacob Eyres

•A bird feeder by Adam Ferris

•A bird house and connect 4 game by Chloe Haynes

•Model cars by Alex Halls and Jordan Ellery

•A seagull mobile by Ethan Pullen

•A Dr Who police box by Daniel Babbs with fully working blue light

•A storage box by Daniel Langler St Pierre

•A travel game by Josh Freeman

We are very pleased to have been asked back to do the Summer

Newsletter. Looking through all the articles of achievement, trips and goodbyes was alone interesting. Having spent my own school work experience here at Noadswood working in the DT department with Mrs. McNulty has meant I am already familiar with most of the staff. Also the trip to Bude which I had the good fortune to go on in 2009. The new lay out seems to have had positive feedback which I am very pleased with and hopefully goes towards encouraging and presenting the high standards experienced at the school.

”Thank you to Noadswood for having us back and to everyone involved.

After reducing the number of printed Newsletters for the Spring edition it has been decided that for future editions

the distribution will be as follows. When each edition is complete, (normally a week before the end of the appropriate term), a message will be put on the website to say the it is available for viewing on the VLE and for Staff on Staffshare. There will be limited copies printed of which most will be distributed to the Community. Also copies will be given to the Chair of Governors, the Headteacher and members of the editorial team. There will be copies available for reading in the Reception Waiting Room and the Library. There will be some available for anyone who asks for a copy to take home at the Reception Office. We also offer to print any additional copies on request if one are left. Please leave your name in the folder in reception and one will be produced and passed to your son/daughter in a couple of school weeks time.N
