We have all enjoyed celebrating the Jubilee in school with tea parties, hat-making, writing letters to the Queen and making crowns and tourist leaflets for visitors to London. In Assembly this morning we sang patriotic songs and learned a little more about the Royal Family and the forthcoming Jubilee celebrations. The Kew College Friends have been extremely generous and purchased a Jubilee Commemora- tive Coin for every child in school (and also for the staff). We are very grateful indeed for this; the coins will be handed out this afternoon. We are very happy to announce that Miss Storrar will be returning after half term with a new name: Mrs Belshaw. She is getting married during half-term and we wish her and new husband a long and happy future together. Year 5 will be returning this afternoon from their stay with PGL at Liddington. We expect them full of verve and energy after their numerous activities, which have included moun- taineering, abseiling, orienteering, climbing, survival skills and giant swings. We also expect Mrs Lovell, Miss Storrar, Mr Flood and Miss Bauman to be glad to be back and to catch up on some sleep! We are very grateful to them for accompanying the children on this trip. I wish you a very happy Jubilee Weekend and half-term break. Kindergarten visit The Royal Mews This week both Kindergarten classes visited The Royal Mews in order to discover more about the Queen and the Royal Carriages. This was a perfect week to visit as the carriages and horses are being prepared for a very special week next week, when the Queen cele-brates her Diamond Jubilee. Both classes got to see the Queen’s favourite carriage and the beautiful and ornate Golden Carriage. We also saw the horses and the state Limousine. A special thanks to the parents and helpers who assisted greatly in making both trips a huge success. Miss Rosenthal

I woke up early on Wednesday 23rd May and realised that this was the day I had been look-ing forward to. It was the day we were going on a school trip to Whipsnade Zoo. We had been told to wear our sports uniform because it was going to be a hot day, so I put them on quickly and had my breakfast. I grabbed my packed lunch, which was ready waiting for me in my sports bag, and jumped into the car. We arrived at school nice and early, as in-structed, and gathered in the classroom and then we filed out into the coach that was waiting outside school. My partner was Thomas Young and we occupied our-selves during the long journey by playing games and looking out of the window at the lovely countryside. We arrived at Whipsnade at about 10.15am and got out of the coach to have our break time snack and play around in the field for a little while. When we had finished, we took our lunch bags and, in single file, we entered the Zoo and sat down on some benches until we were all assembled and ac-counted for. I had never been to a Zoo before because seeing animals all caged up in small spaces is not something I would have enjoyed. We started walking through the Zoo to-wards the elephants and it was so good to see that the animals were in big green spaces. The elephants were, as you would expect, very big but the baby elephants were just lovely. I loved the ostriches, which just stood and stared at us as did the apes. The giraffes were in a sort of barn but they could wander outside if they wanted to. The zebras were in a barn and like the giraffes, they could wander out into a field when they wanted to as well. Somehow, the lions seemed to have disappeared or gone on holiday which was rather dis-appointing. A lady who worked at the Zoo did a quiz with us and handed out worksheets. She told us about the various strategies animals had in order to survive and then sent us on an infor-mation hunt. We were given clues and we had to go and find the answers. After this, we found a green space and sat down to eat our packed lunches. It had been a hot tiring day and so we all got back onto the coach and sat fairly quietly whilst we journeyed back to school. On arriving we all went into our classrooms and col-lected our belongings before filing back to the door to wait for our parents to pick us up. Joseph 4L

Year 6 trip to the Globe Theatre On Wednesday 23rd May, Year 6 travelled into London to visit The Globe Theatre as part of our

studies on Shakespeare and his play “Macbeth”. We were lucky enough to see a scene from a re-

hearsal for “As You Like It” being performed on stage in Gujarati. Part of the visit comprised a work-

shop on “Macbeth” which was taken by an actress who made it great fun. It was sweltering hot

when we came outside at lunchtime so we sat and ate a relaxing lunch on the steps of the river

bank opposite St Paul’s Cathedral before returning to school. It was most apposite that St Paul’s

Cathedral was right in the foreground of our view, particularly after our workshop at the National

Archives the day before.

Yr 6 to National Archives On Tuesday 22nd May Year 6 went to the National Archives to engage in a workshop on the use of propaganda in WWII. Whilst guns, tanks, and bombs were the principal weapons of World War II, there were other, more subtle, forms of warfare as well. Words, posters, and films waged a constant battle for the hearts and minds of the people. The children looked at a series of posters, some of which were original art work, and considered why they were de-vised and what message they aimed to get across. They also studied a series of pictures from the war and designed their own propaganda captions from both British and German points of view. The picture was considered from both perspectives and Year 6 suggested that a British propaganda slogan would have an arrow pointed at St Paul’s Cathedral and simply say, “Missed!” whilst a propaganda slogan from the German point of view might say, “London crumbles under our superior forces.” It was a very informative workshop and thoroughly enjoyed by Year 6 who were excellent ambassa-

dors of Kew College.
