a sense ofsomeone pacing me,betrayed now and thenby drizzle and mist a wooded path edgesthe deep glacial lakea preference for duskor early morningalmost rain graymy unseen companion

Bay Day

surreptitious sunrisesplotchy dissolute mists an indifferent canopya contemplative time

Late Day Sail

daylight caught in clouded gray sudden white caps on the bay unprepared for wind and rain a sail boat hustles to harbor

Boat Yard

fog charms boat yard derricks softens stilted stances as if in dance they celebrate a slow start to the day’s work

The Room

he reaches the almost dawn book shadowed shelves while his city slumbers

his furniture rustles awake welcomes him once again in this diaphanous hour

for reasons known only to itself this Sunday’s clouded light makes an effort to be morning

Afternoon

in unison the flock dips then rises across the late afternoon sky to disappear in the fir tree darkening blue soon brings the day to a close

Chickadee

five inches beak tip to tail upside down in the tree in search of insects this windy rainy day

Rain

quick rain at the window startled everyone in its intensity as if trying to join the conversation at the dinner party

Evening

vast eveningawaits starsno moon rise paves a pathacross the lakegarden walksdisappearstones hold wall’s duty tostand againstintruders who make their way as quiet nightpreparesfor dreams

Coat

the coat’s exhausted seamsbarely keep gusty winds at baythis gray autumn afternoonmomentarily startled bythin sunlight’s pale sky

Cocktail Hour

the room’s worn functional furniture like the men and women quietly talking looking out the window to the garden equally in need of tending

Fall Rain

in windy levitationfrivolity just beforerain spattered calm rambunctious leavesenliven sidewalks

Crescent Moon

bare gray clouds hints of sun’s gold on island edges darkness kidnaps the bright crescent for the journey west

Mourning Morning

a bedraggled morningno particular purposehides behind the curtainswaits expectantly outsidethe not yet opened doorperhaps purpose lurksbeyond low gray cloudsthat blanket the islands

Spider Web

spider webs glint inafternoon’s slant lightthe large spider inrent free occupancy where flowered plantsoverflow ceramic pots and the deck looks toback yards and islands

in ever briefer days

Morning Frost

morning’s frosty silencespreads across all thingsas far as eyes can seecrystalline white
