As presidential hopefuls race toward the 2020 election, Jerry Brown is watching it all from his Northern California ranch. Even though he’s retired, the political lifer has strong feelings about the candidates and what’s needed for Democrats to win back the White House. For five decades, Brown had a front row seat to the world of California and U.S. politics. Now, KQED brings you The Political Mind of Jerry Brown, a new limited-run radio and podcast series hosted by KQED Senior Editor for Politics and Government Scott Shafer that gives listeners an intimate look at Brown’s keen political eye.
As a four-term California governor, mayor of Oakland and California attorney general, Brown pioneered efforts to reduce the influence of money in politics, championed far-sighted environmental policies, and elevated diverse voices to the judiciary and in his administrations. Along the way, Brown also faced a humiliating defeat on the presidential campaign trail and spent years in “the wilderness” after a stinging loss for the U.S. Senate in 1982.
Shafer spent more than 40 hours interviewing Brown at his ranch as part of a partnership with
the Oral History Center at The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley. With those conversations and interviews with dozens of others, the series takes listeners through the lessons Brown learned from a political career unparalleled in California history.
The Political Mind of Jerry Brown premieres on January 8 with hour-long episodes on KQED 88.5 FM on Wednesdays at 8pm through January 29. Podcast listeners can binge the entire series for free on Apple Podcasts, NPR One or wherever you get your podcasts beginning January 11.
Also, you can join Brown and Shafer on January 13 at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco as they kick off the series. More information and tickets are available at kqed.org/events.
This project was made possible with support from California Humanities, a nonprofit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Visit www.calhum.org.

STARTER EPISODE
“Running”Moonface is an intimate, cinematic and adults-only fiction podcast from producer James Kim. In six episodes, Paul, a second-generation Korean American, grapples with navigating sexuality, identity and class issues in his hometown of Downey, California. The underlying story is the language barrier and Paul’s struggle to connect with his immigrant mother, who doesn’t know he’s gay.
STARTER EPISODE
“My Mind Says Prepare to Fight”Prince: The Story of 1999 is a podcast from Minnesota Public Radio's The Current, which looks at the people and events that shaped the artist’s groundbreaking 1999 album. Through interviews from his bandmates, music and archival sound, this episode tells the story of a pre-fame Prince and how a disastrous stint opening for the Rolling Stones influenced his work to come.
STARTER EPISODE
“This Is the Coachella Most Californians Don’t See”The California Report Magazine is KQED's weekly show that tells the unique stories of people who live in the Golden State. In this episode, host Sasha Khokha teams up with Coachella Unincorporated producer Bryan Mendez to explore the economic, environmental and artistic realities of living in the real Coachella, a place now in the shadow of a famous music festival.

What are the best podcasts to listen to right now? We asked Suzie Racho, the producer/director of The California Report, what she recommends. Here are her picks.
Airs Thursday, January 16, at 8pmIf you could listen to only one song for the rest of your life, what would it be? Desert Island Discs, a popular radio program and podcast from the BBC, takes this question to the next level by asking their guests to share which book, luxury item and eight songs they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island. The results reveal fascinating insights into their
lives. KQED brings you the episode featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda: composer, lyricist, singer, playwright and creator and original lead actor in the musical Hamilton. Tune in and listen to the special soundtrack of Miranda’s life.
Airs Thursdays beginning January 23, at 8pmIn 1965, in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement, activist and white ally Reverend James Reeb was brutally murdered by white supremacists. Three men were tried and acquitted for his murder by an all-white jury. The case resulted in a national outcry and remains a significant unsolved murder exemplifying the denials of justice under racism. Fifty years later, journalists Andrew Beck Grace and Chip Brantley return to Alabama to expose the lies that kept the murder from being solved and uncover a story about guilt and memory that says as much about America today as it does about our past.

Sanditon on Masterpiece Premieres Sunday, January 12, at 9pm on KQED 9 Do you love Jane Austen’s work? Lots of people do — and not just her novels. There have been more than 60 on-screen adaptions of her work (I’m thinking fondly of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle). Now there’s something new. On January 12, Masterpiece presents Sanditon, a bold and lavish adaptation of Austen’s final, unfinished work written in 1817 when she was dying. In this new series, screenwriter Andrew Davies (Les Miserables and Pride and Prejudice, among others) takes up where Austen left off, and finishes the story with flourish. (See Did You Know? below for more about that.)
Sanditon is set in a seaside town (Sanditon) and features a mix of ecletic Austen characters: Charlotte Heywood, a lively, but levelheaded heroine; the funny, slightly wild and charming Sidney Parker; and Lady Denham, Sanditon’s straightforward grande dame. You’ll also meet Tom Parker, the town’s compulsively enterprising promoter, and Miss Lambe, a mysterious West Indian heiress.
Tune in and see what happens when they all meet up by the sea. The adventure begins January 12, when the first two episodes of this eight-part series air on KQED 9. —Ellyn Hament
DID YOU KNOW?• Austen never wrote a title for this book, which her family called The Brothers.
• Several authors have taken a stab at finishing “Sanditon,” including, in 1932, Alice Cobbett, who called it Somehow Lengthened and added smugglers and shipwrecks.
• Austen has been cited in approximately 27 legal decisions, including a citation in a 2015 U.S. Supreme Court case (Whitfield v. United States).

In the Heat of the Night Airs Saturday, January 18, at 8pm on KQED 9Set in a small, steamy southern town, this 1967 film features the unlikely crime-fighting duo of Rod Steiger, who plays the town’s police chief, and Sidney Poitier, a top homicide detective from Philadelphia. The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture.

Secrets of the Dead: Bombing Auschwitz Airs Tuesday, January 21,
at 9pm on KQED 9Should the Allies have
risked killing Auschwitz prisoners to stop future atrocities? This was one
of the greatest moral questions of the 20th century discussed by Churchill, Allied Air
Commanders, the American War Refugee Board and
the Jewish Agency. Explore this dilemma through
dramatic re-creations of the arguments on both sides.
