Australian designers create new worksusing materials from India's largest slum
Three exhibitions opening at Australian Design
Centre
Opening Thursday 5 April: Porosity Kabari willpresent works by Trent Jansen, Richard Goodwin and
Ishan Khosla from their groundbreaking project
in India, Interpretations V: Paper (cellulose) will seeseven designers experiment with the possibilities of
paper as a material for design and En Vitrine (In theFront Window) will showcase the incredible textile
skills of Vita Cochran.
Porosity Kabari Work by Trent Jansen, Richard Goodwin andIshan Khosla
Made from materials and craftsmanship sourced solelyfrom the ‘Chor Bazaar’ (thieves market) and ‘KabariBazaars’ (junk markets) in Mumbai, India, the works inthis exhibition are the result of an interdisciplinary, crosscultural, collaborative project by Australian objectdesigner Trent Jansen, artist/architect Richard Goodwinand Indian design thinker Ishan Khosla. Interpretations V: Paper (cellulose)
Interpretations V explores the material limits of paper(cellulose) – a challenging but incredibly rich material.Each designer has cut, folded, formed, stitched, moulded(as pulp) or laminated paper, transforming an everyday,inexpensive, twodimensional material into a threedimensional work of experimental design.
Designers: Elbowrkshp, Tom Fereday, Benja Harney,Andrew Simpson, Tom Skeehan, Harriet Wattsand Charles Wilson.

Vita Cochran: En Vitrine (In the Front Window)
Vita Cochran is a textile artist with a particular interest
in early 20thcentury women modernists and the way
that the decorative arts and abstract painting informed
each other.
The exhibition Vita has made for Object Space was

the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifsin Paris. Vita’s handembroidered handbags and
applique hangings embrace bold colour and
geometry. These works seek a position somewhere
between utility, fashion and art.

Talks and events
To support the exhibitions there will be a series of talksand events presented at the Australian Design Centre.
Trent Jansen in conversation Australian object designer Trent Jansen discussesworking in Mumbai for three weeks to create whatbecame Porosity Kabari. Joined on the trip by artist/architect Richard Goodwin andIndian design thinker Ishan Khosla the project challengedthem to produce furniture and object pieces, made frommaterials and craftsmanship sourced solely from the‘Chor Bazaar’ (thieves market) and ‘Kabari Bazaars’ (junkmarkets) in Mumbai, India. The process challenged themto ‘make something from something else’ – the essenceof sustainable design. Trent will discuss his experiences of working in a differentway from his normal practice and how this affected thecreative process. When: Thursday 12 April 6 8pm

Pulped Fiction: Stories from Interpretations V:
Cellulose (paper) Panel discussion with designers Andrew Simpson,
Harriet Watts and Tom Skeehan. Interpretation is an ongoing series of works andexhibitions held every two years, curated by industrialdesigner Andrew Simpson. Lessons in transformative objects with Professor
Richard Goodwin Richard Goodwin’s practice as anartist/architect/professor, explores Duchamp’s revelationof the ‘readymade’, as fundamental to his postfunctionalist theory and practice. How can something besomething else? His work does not invent new shapesbut instead appropriates objects from differing functions,combining them at different scales. Goodwin will present a lecture focusing on hisexperiences working on this interdisciplinary, crosscultural, collaborative project in Mumbai for three weeksalongside Australian object designer Trent Jansen andIndian design thinker Ishan Khosla to create whatbecame Porosity Kabari.
