JON EAGAR CLUB CHAIRMAN

CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN

2016 seems to have been a very short year but a year that has, and continues to produce many external challenges that affect all of us in one way or another.

The Club’s facilities continue to be well supported by our members and year to date financial performance is encouraging but enhancing the Kelvin brand and improving the quality of our offerings and the Club experience for existing and new members is an ongoing objective. A process that is never universally popular when long held traditions are reviewed and new initiatives introduced.

Those offerings are not restricted to our food and beverage outlets and we need to remind ourselves every now and again that our Club has some excellent sporting facilities. The most recent focus has been on tennis where we are in the fortunate position of having many courts, an asset with considerable untapped potential for coaching and competitive tennis for existing and new members.

Proceeding with the proposed extension to the gymnasium and pool bar remains subject to obtaining approval at a separate members meeting and it is hoped that cost and programme detail will still be available for consideration this year aimed at a possible construction start in March 2017. In addition, the detailed investigation of the relevant costs, method and efficacy relating to the proposal tabled by a member at the last AGM motivating that the swimming pool could be effectively and economically heated will be tabled.

Although the year is almost over, there are a number of interesting Club functions between now and the end of the year the last being our very popular New Year’s Eve functions. It is however a very busy time for management and staff as they focus efforts on a seamless member experience and aim for zero defect.

The calendar year has been a good one for the Club and our financial year performance to date is encouraging but our winter rains have created another challenge as we face the prospects of a long, hot and dry summer and the imposition of very stringent water restrictions that will naturally also have an impact on our Club between now and April 2017.

Newlands will host a Test Match between Sri Lanka in January and the 2017 rugby programme will start in February but it will be interesting to see whether declining attendance as evidenced by the lack of pressure on parking on rugby Saturdays continues.

Thank you for supporting your Club very well this year.

Management, staff and the Committee look forward to your continued support in 2017, a new year that we all hope will leave the diverse challenges the country has faced this year with some positive resolutions.

CHEF'S CHOICE

MUESLI RUSKS WITH FRUIT, NUTS AND SEEDSMAKES ABOUT 30 RUSKS

• 550g cake flour• 1/2 tsp salt• 2 heaped tsp baking powder• 375g muesli• 75g desiccated coconut• 75g dried fruit (such as raisins, sultanas or dried cranberries)• 75g roughly chopped nuts (almonds, pecans or even peanuts are all delicious)• 35g sesame seeds• 375g butter, melted• 2 tbsp honey, warmed• 250ml buttermilk• 250ml condensed milk• 1 tsp vanilla essence

1. Preheat the oven to 180C. Grease a large roasting tin (about 3-5cm deep) with butter.

2. In a very large bowl, sift all the dry ingredients together. Mix all the wet ingredients together and add to the dry mixture. Beat firmly with a wooden spoon until you get a stiff, sticky dough.

3. Spoon the mixture into the roasting tin and spread evenly. Using wet hands, smooth the top of the dough. Cut the dough into rectangles about 3cm x 8cm using a small, sharp, wet knife. Bake for about 50 minutes until golden brown on top.

4. Remove from the oven and allow to cool a little before turning out and separating into individual rusks. Leave to cool completely on wire racks.

5. Transfer the racks to a cool oven (about 100C) for about 5 hours until the rusks are completely dry and crisp.

NEW YEAR, HEALTHIER YOUEach January we are all inspired to set new resolutions for the year. A small percentage of people actually make good on those resolutions, while sadly about 75% of people stick to their goals for at least a week, less than half (46%) are still on target six months later (a recent study revealed)

It's hard to keep up the enthusiasm but it's not impossible. For 2017, pick one worthy resolution, and stick with it.

To give you a hand, Kelvin Grove Club has invited Landie Greyling as our guest speaker to start off the year. Landie is an ultra-trail runner, who has not only placed first but set all new records in the following events: Salomon SkyRun, Otter Trail Run, Dodo Trail and the Two Oceans Trail Run. Landie also won the Matroosberg Ultra Distance SkyMarathon in 2014, finished 12th at the Skyrunning World Champs and finished fourth in October 2016, at Marathon du Mont-Blanc, an alpine trail-running event in Chamonix, France. Tanglewood is a group of like-minded youngsters (all around 50-ish) who have a love for music and, in particular, the vocal folk rock music that was produced in the canyons of Los Angeles in the late 60s and early 70s.

Their repertoire includes songs written and performed by CSN, Eagles, Poco, Mama’s & Papa’s, Neil Young, James Taylor. We include other music, notably from America, Simon & Garfunkel, Loggins & Messina, and England Dan & John Ford Coley – all with a strong vocal component.

What would a gig be without some good old 60s and 70s rock? So they include a little Beatles, Rolling Stones, Monkees, Roy Orbison and others, for good measure. Mostly they have a lot of fun playing the music they like.

Some of the places they have rocked include the Alphen Hotel, Simons Restaurant at Groot Constantia and The Lookout Deck in Hout Bay.

Kelvin has tasted some excellent and interesting wines at the last three tastings evenings.

In August we were introduced to the unfiltered range from Fleur du Cap. Cut deep into the slopes of the Papegaaiberg, on the outskirts of the historic town of Stellenbosch, lies a famous landmark in the winelands. This is Die Bergkelder. Founded in 1967, this ‘famous cellar in the mountain’ was the first of its kind in South Africa and is home to the Fleur du Cap brand.

Fleur du Cap unfiltered wines are made in the most natural way possible with minimum human interference, resulting in wines with abundant flavours unique to each varietal and the rich biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Tim Truter who, at the time was the Cellar Master at Die Bergkelder, was very informative on their wines and answered all the questions that were put to him extremely well.

In September we had the pleasure of having The General Manager, The Brand Ambassador and Tasting Room Manager from Hidden Valley Wines with us. The three ladies made the large group of over 70 members feel very welcome with their warm hospitality. They decorated the room beautifully with flowers they brought from the farm and entertained us not only with their beautiful wines, but also delicious olives and olive oils which are produced on the farm.

Hidden Valley Wine Farm is a gem to be discovered on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain near Stellenbosch. The modern architecture makes use of natural elements of rock and wood, surrounded by indigenous valley and slopes of vineyard rows which makes for breathtaking views.

Our October wine tasting was done by Samantha Brown, representing Corder wines from Elgin. The Corder family bought the farm in 2003 with the purpose of growing and producing world class Sauvignon Blanc wine. They started the transformation from apples into what is now a spectacular new world wine farm in 2004. This cool climate produces exceptional cool climate wines, wines we were privileged to taste which added to an enjoyable evening.

BOWLS

FRIENDLY AGAINST WPCC

The annual derby between Kelvin and WPCC took place on Sunday 4 September 2016, with the awesome weather contributing to what turned out to be a really great day. WPCC managed to score 18 points vs 6 points to KG Bowls. Congratulations to all our participating members.

The result, however, is not really that important. What is important in these friendly encounters is that the comradery that exists between the two clubs ALWAYS comes out on top. That really is the essence of the day and let’s hope that it continues for many years to come.

UNDER 75 VS OVER 75 TOURNAMENT

Again we were blessed with the most awesome weather and for the first time since the inception of this tournament, the Overs took the honours. The winning Overs team was Roy Watson, Mike Peploe and Shirley Macdonald. Congratulations to the team.

TWILIGHT BOWLS FROM OCTOBER 2016

From 3 October 2016, Twilight Bowls on Mondays will start an hour later to accommodate members still working. Tabs-in will be at 17h15 with play ceasing about 19h45. This arrangement will be reviewed in December 2016.

OPEN DAY – 16 OCTOBER 2016

Open Day at Kelvin Grove Bowls Club has become quite a popular event on the Kelvin Grove Calendar. On Sunday 16 October 2016 we had 24 “guests” turn up to try their hand at bowls!

Well done to everybody who invited friends and family and/or marketed the event! Everybody had lots of fun and we are sure we will be able to persuade some of these “guests” to become permanent KG Bowls members.

UPCOMING EVENTS ON THE BOWLS CALENDAR FOR 2016

Two-Four-Two Tournament: Tuesday 29 November and 6 December 2016 in the afternoon

Marion Ord Tournament: Friday 16 December 2016 in the morning

BRIDGE

If you enjoy playing bridge but shudder at the thought of finding three players, preparing a feast fit for a king, making tea, perhaps offering a glass of wine at the end and the being left with what looks like a disaster area, perhaps social bridge at Kelvin Grove is the answer for you.

Social bridge is played on Mondays and Fridays from 13:30 to 17:00 in the Chart Room. On cold winter days there is a cosy fire to keep you warm and in the summer a very efficient air conditioner keeps the temperature at a comfortable level. Added to this, the ever willing Coffee Shop waitresses take orders for refreshments such as fresh fruit juice, minerals, tea, coffee or something “stronger’’ and, of course, delicious eats.

You need not bring a partner, nor should you feel obliged to come every week. You may find that you only want to play once or twice a month. Whatever you decide, you are more than welcome. Post mortems and criticism are strongly discouraged and if you are bad tempered, you will certainly not be welcome.

Rubber bridge has at least been discontinued and the BODD or BONE scoring system is now used, which is the system favored by millions of bridge players all over the world. The standard of bridge is medium to strong. Unfortunately beginners are not catered for. There is no charge but as the stakes are 10c per 100 points, you will need to bring a few cents with you. Score sheets (but not pens or pencils) are provided.

Remember, there is no commitment, so do pay a visit to the social bridge at Kelvin when you are at a loose end on a Monday or Friday afternoon. You may be pleasantly surprised.

We look forward to seeing you this year. For more information on bridge, contact Daphne Hawkins on 021 686 7991 or 072 358 4280.

By the end of September the maintenance of our top croquet court was complete and we were able to start the new season with a very successful and well attended opening day. Our thanks go to the bowls section for allowing us the use of the Grove bowling green whilst our court was out of action.

We are delighted that we have several new and very keen players taking up this tremendous game. Our first league match was a victorious one against a strong Somerset West side, winning by 7 games to 2. This was followed by a winning start in the Robinson Cup (an open doubles league) by defeating Greyton Croquet Club by 12 matches to 4. The season looks a very promising one indeed. Our first club tournament, the Muffet and senior’s cup, (handicaps 8-10) was won by Liz Anderson and the runner up was Jean Farrell.

At the end of February 2017 we are hosts to the Western Cape Croquet Association for the 2017 golf croquet championships. There promises to be some terrific games so please do come and watch and support our Kelvin Grove entrants.

If anyone would like to take up the sport, please do contact myself or Jean Farrell and we will gladly teach you how to play.

We wish all our members well over the festive season and send best wishes for the New Year.

Regards

CROQUET

Somehow November has arrived – is anyone brave enough to take responsibility? Thanks to all for keeping our fairways (and rough) busy throughout the year and especially during the winter months… shows our tenacity and love for the fun of the game.

The usual suspects seem to keep their noses in the lead… but the sleuths are closing in…

The Golf Protector’s Report is about to be released – entitled Prize Capture.

Welcome back Sandy Ford after a surgical layoff. Tom, get your hip to heal so that we may abuse you on the course again soon… Kelvin golf shirts have been received – please contact Reception.

We are planning a year beginning party similar to last year - late January or early February so please pay attention to the mail trail.

Wishing you and your families a safe and festive silly season – or is that a safe and silly festive season?

Please watch the maniacs on the road and let's all get ourselves safely into the New Year.

Thanks for the camaraderie in 2016… and yes MAYPD!

LETTERS FROM MEMBERS“I had the pleasure of joining one of your members, Denis Quayle, to lunch at the poolside restaurant this afternoon. We were five people and I wish to extend my compliments to the chef, the kitchen and the service staff for a most enjoyable afternoon. The dishes that were served were all beautifully presented and my Thai Chicken Curry was very tasty. The service was friendly and professional.Well done and thank you.’’- Kobus Louw l Lunch

“Dear Shahiema & the Kelvin TeamOn behalf of the BWA and the guests and finalists of the Regional Business Achiever Awards we wish to extend a very heartfelt thank you to the entire team for your professionalism and efficiency while assisting us with the event. A extra special thank you to Shahiema and Angie for their kindness.’’- Cheryl Steyn | Business Achiever Awards

‘’Dinner in the Cellar yesterday evening was very pleasant, and I would like to thank you and Shahiema for having arranged for the table and special menu. As on a previous such occasion, I would also like to commend Samuel. The ambience, meal and service were outstanding.’’- Richard Cooke | Dinner

‘‘I want you to compliment your young lady Hazel who works in the Barn. My wife and I came into the Barn on Monday evening, which was extremely busy, but Hazel did not panic, all she said was we are very busy but I will organise a table as soon as possible, and within a few minutes she called me to say our table was ready. How she managed it I will never know as there were still many other people still waiting. Even when we were seated she still assured us don’t worry, your food order will be taken shortly which is exactly what happened, and then still came to our table to assure us that even though the kitchen was very busy our food would not take long. On that note our food arrived, she then still had time to come and ask us was everything OK.I would like you to pass this on, with service like she gave us is very rare in these busy times of today.’’- Denzil Bester | Dinner

‘’I wanted to commend you and the Kelvin team on a superb function. Despite you having so many functions on the same night the staff were superb, nothing was too much trouble and the food was excellent. Please tell the team that we were so impressed! I had not realised that the alcohol was so much more expensive than we can buy at the Pool Bar! I had not looked at the prices before and we were surprised at the total but we did not want to stem the tide as the friends were having so much fun!’’- Claire Louw | Private Function

“I would like to compliment the staff at Kelvin Grove, several of my friends and members have been to the Club weekly for the last month or so. All the staff have been helpful and courteous, and staff in the Barn and Sushi Bar excellent. The food has been great as well. Please can you let them know that they are appreciated?”- Don Nash

“Dear Danie & your staff Having spent three very special occasions at Kelvin during the past five days - it seems that I need to thank you. The first was the excellent evening when Helen Zille spoke. Your staff handled the huge numbers exceedingly well and the meal was delicious and very suitable. The second occasion was the Erosion Society prize-giving gala dinner also in the Ballroom on Friday. What an evening! It was 7 star! With a superb three course dinner, excellent service and altogether an evening to remember. Your staff such as Angie, Jessica and others looked a little weary but were again superb. The third occasion was in the Waterside for an early Sunday lunch for all our available family (11 in all). Hazel handled the large table efficiently and graciously and Jasmine was her serene self. Please let those mentioned know how much we appreciate their excellent efforts ALWAYS.”- Maakie Duk
