Assembly: 5H Quote: Andrew P (Year 1) Unprompted on the gate, “Mr Collis would you like some help with the bins?” Magdalena Z: “Mr Collis, I played my first game of netball last night. We didn’t win, but I had the best time ever.” What a brilliant attitude from our students. Dear Families

What a terrific start to the term! Despite being a little anxious of the weather and timing for the Year 5 camp in the first 3 days of a term, I couldn’t have been more impressed by the feedback in regards to the student’s manner whilst away at Maldon. Our Year 5s responded to the high expectations as representatives of St Joseph’s and have once again highlighted their readiness for leadership in 2017. We sincerely thank Miss Guy, Mrs Quitt, Mr Hartney, Will Davidson, Tim Smart and Mark Brady for their commitment and energy while on camp. Rumour has it, one teacher slept for 16 hours on Friday evening suggesting a big start to the term. Well done all! Our next campers are our Year 6s, then 4s and 3s. A beaut way to finish off the school year.

Last week, under the guidance of Miss Ryle, the Environment Team prepared goals across the 5 Resource Smart modules. It was pleasing to hear the students created, and more importantly ‘own’ these, and the subsequent actions. Wonderful work continues to be done in this area and we congratulate the students for driving these initiatives across our community. With significant improvements in our energy and water bills, this term we will introduce our ‘waste’ module. We ask all members of our community to be mindful of the bins in circulation throughout the school. These were reviewed by the students last week, with quite disappointing results. Despite the obvious signage and colouring, all bins had mixed rubbish throughout. We look forward to some positive and collective changes in waste habits in the coming weeks and months.

It was delightful to see the excited Preps venture out to launch their science unit with a trip to Science Works. Not surprising, all were tired after a fabulous time; with half the bus sleeping on the return trip. Thanks Miss Dullard, Miss Cauchi, Mrs Moore and parents for assisting on the day.

Well done Prep families for attending the special Prep Family Mass on Sunday. This was particularly well attended, filling half the church with parents, siblings and grandparents. What a lovely celebration for our community.

FIRST AID TRAINING

On Monday, all students from Prep - Year 6 participated in an incursion from St John’s on basic first aid. This was particularly well received by the staff and students and hopefully has provided the students with some calm and practical advice should they encounter an emergency. A fantastic program for our students! Maybe in 2017, we should offer Level 2 first aid for our parent community. All staff undergo this invaluable training every two years.

DADS & KIDS CAMPING WEEKEND

It’s nearly that time of year again for the annual dads and kids camping weekend away on the 12th & 13th November. Last year over 200 attended this great initiative and Brendan Edmonds is looking to rally the troops again. Please see the flier included below and contact Brendan as soon possible with your intentions for 2016. These are great memories for the children. [email protected]

HOOP TEAM REP TEAM

Congratulations to our Year 5&6 girls’ basketball team who represented the school at the zone basketball championships today. So many happy and smiling faces as they left this morning.

The Principal’s Award this week, is for displaying good manners and respect towards others. I ask that we all remind the children about how this might look, sound and could be evidenced throughout the school community. The impeccable and impressionable manner of our students remains as a trademark of our school and we ask that you please pick the students up when asked respectfully do certain things or reinforce how they should respond to certain tasks or simple exchanges. These positive behaviours align with our expectations and are valuable life skills that can often define the pathway for our students. A collective approach is most important and please don’t forget to acknowledge the positive when it is displayed. We remind all students; manners cost nothing, but the rewards are great!

An example is supporting the ‘no playing ball games after school’ in accordance with the school rules, running or yelling through the school building when accompanied by an adult or how the students enter the school building or classrooms in the morning. Thanks for your support.

Finally, after joining our community 7 years ago, we fondly farewell and congratulate Mr Eddy on accepting a position at St Mary’s, Hampton in 2017. We thank Nathan for his wonderful contributions to our community, and most importantly for the impact he has had on our senior students over the past 7 years. I speak on behalf of the many families and sincerely pass on our gratitude for his commitment to the St Joseph’s community. Nathan can look forward to the remaining weeks and be very proud of his achievements and influence over his time at St Joseph’s.

Let’s look forward to celebrating another positive week at the #1 school, St Joseph’s, Simon Collis Principal Important afterthoughts…

Great to hear how so many students have been trying out for representative basketball and netball more recently. Having a go, persistence and courage are great character traits going into these trials. So pleased to acknowledge this feedback from the students and proud parents.

I politely remind parents again, not to entertain conversations with staff about desired teachers for their children and class arrangements for 2017. We respectively ask that you let the leadership determine these professionally considered arrangements. These can be awkward and inappropriate conversations to walk into. Should you have a valid ‘educational’ reason for a particular pathway, please put in writing to the Principal.

Dear Parents,

October 9th to 15th marks Mental Health Week, a week-long campaign focused on spreading the message around the varied illnesses associated with mental health. Our students are in a very fortunate position of being part of an education system which encourages open communication regarding mental health, and actively promoting strategies for wellbeing. Tomorrow our staff will participate in a workshop led by a ‘Smiling Mind’ facilitator and we are excited to have an hour of guided mindfulness after a busy school day!

During the past 3 years the staff at St Joseph’s have participated in a wide range of professional development regarding the benefits of mindfulness and we endeavour to incorporate this into the daily classroom routines - even for ‘just a minute’. It is invaluable for our children to be taught to slow down and breathe deeply amidst the busyness of their everyday lives.

Smiling Mind exists to help build individual mental health and wellbeing through positive, pre-emptive tools based on mindfulness meditation. Co-developed with psychologists and health professionals, Smiling Mind is accessible to everyone, irrespective of geographic location or socio-economic status. The app is a wonderful tool for mindfulness practise at home, and the guided mindfulness can benefit the whole family. You can find the free app here: https://smilingmind.com.au/smiling-mind-app/

Also, we are so excited to invite you to a VERY SPECIAL ASSEMBLY on Friday 21st October (normal assembly time) when we will have the Smiling Mind team lead our whole school community in guided mindfulness!! It is an amazing opportunity for us all to come together for this workshop and I must thank the people at Smiling Mind for facilitating this session. We welcome all parents/ grandparents/family members to join us for this assembly and to start your day with a smile on your mind!

Finally, a thank you to Jo (mum to Willow) who, as an ambassador for Smiling Mind, was allocated two mindfulness workshops by this wonderful organisation and very generously donated them to our school at no cost. Thanks Jo!

SRC News: This term the SRC will be busy with a couple of initiatives at St Joseph’s: firstly, they will be responsible for welcoming our Smiling Mind visitors on Friday 21st, and assisting in running the assembly. Secondly, *(and very excitedly), the SRC will be organising and helping to run the auditions for our St Joseph’s Big Top Talent Show! No doubt budding performers of all kinds are busy rehearsing at home, and all those interested in auditioning will need to pick up a nomination form from their SRC rep/classroom teacher. First heats will take place in week 4 and led by the SRC in their classrooms, with successful acts going through to the next round auditions with Fiona Childs and Pia Noble on Friday 11th November. Pia and Fiona will decide the (approximately) 7 acts to perform at the St Joseph’s Rio Carnival on Saturday 26th November….so exciting!! Have a great week! Michelle Moore – Deputy Principal

On Thursday the 6th of October the Preps took a trip to ScienceWorks to begin their Term 4 Faith Inquiry of Physical Science. Blessed with lovely weather, students were immersed in a range of activities where they could explore the use of science in everyday items and scenarios. The highlight of our day was participating in the Toys and Forces Show (designed by our very own Mrs Wood!) The show was a hit and allowed students the opportunity to see and experience how everyday toys are powered with push, pull, twisting and spinning forces. After a play in the sunny weather, a group of very tired Preps (and teachers) made their way back to school for some much needed R&R!

Our learning around how toys move and change will continue to develop as the term progresses and we are very much looking forward to the discoveries we will make! A very big thank you to all the teachers and parents that assisted on the day! These successful days wouldn’t be possible without you!

“When a toy runs out of energy it stops” Archie “I learnt that some special words are twist, pull and push” Ella “I learnt that a toy needs energy to move” Sasha “At the toy show we had to push the ball and pull back the skateboard” Francesca “I saw a thing that I had to figure out what I needed to do to make sure I put the blocks in the right spot” Oscar R

The Year 1s have proved to be determined, spirited and highly capable when faced with a very challenging mission! At the end of last term, they entered the classroom to find a very worried Captain Glumac, who had just received news that Doctor Messy had captured some of the punctuation marks and used his evil powers to make them forget who they were and what they did. The only hope was for the superheroes of Year 1G to help!

Captain Glumac knew that they had been practising some very advanced punctuation in their writing. The superheroes began their mission with boldness and speed, and it wasn’t long before they had successfully placed Captain Full Stop back into the correct context and begun to set the world of grammar straight again. After mission two and three, Captain Question Mark and Captain Exclamation Mark had also been put into a very powerful sentence by each superhero and, with the superman theme song playing softly in the background, their faces had the knowing look of success. The completed mission was celebrated with a graduation for the new superheroes, where they dressed to impress, with their new superhero hats!

This term, 1G continue to ensure that the world of grammar stays well intact. They love using exclamation marks and question marks when writing narratives in their personal Writer’s Notebook. Full stops are also being used with more confidence to add fluency and organisation to their short, sharp commands, while writing instructional texts for the first time. Anna Glumac

Congratulations to the "Joey’s Sharpshooters" who played their first netball match on Monday afternoon down at GESAC. We won 4 goals to 3 in a very impressive debut match for our team. It was great to see all of our training throughout the year so far come to fruition on court.

We have 13 players signed up and so will have to roster players off throughout the season as it is simply too many players to rotate on and off the court each week. We really only need a handful more to be able to put a second team on court! (If there is another parent out there interested in recruiting a few extras and coaching a second team, please let me know!)

The grade 3 children involved yesterday afternoon seemed to absolutely love their first experience of competition netball. For some of them, this was their first experience of being involved in an organised sporting competition.
