International Concrete Repair Institute

The International Association of Concrete Repair Specialists was formed, with a formal organizational meeting in Naperville, Illinois on May 21, 1988, which was attended by 66 repair specialists. In 1993 the name was changed to the International Concrete Repair Institute.

The organizing members agreed on a statement of purpose, which is:To improve the quality of concrete restoration, repair and protection, through education of, and communication among, the members and those who use their services. The philosophy of the group is that if the quality of work is improved, and purchasers of repair services feel that they are obtaining a durable product, the demand for their products and services will increase and the image of the concrete repair industry will be elevated.

Project DescriptionThe original bridge was constructed in 1968 but due to increased traffic volume a second parallel bridge had to be built in 1989. Each bridge consists of 10 spans ranging between 26 to 30 m. Between each span there are 8 post-tensioned reinforced concrete beams. The beams span onto reinforced concrete columns that transfer the weight down to piled foundations.

Project RequirementsMany bridges in Colombia were designed and constructed several decades ago and designed to withstand lesser highway and earthquake loads than today. Lots of these concrete structures have naturally deteriorated over time, often due to high humidity, carbon dioxide and industrial gas emissions. Inevitably these structures are now in need of refurbishment.

Sika SolutionThe longitudinal reinforcement in the beams was calculated to be insuf-ficient to support the increased bridge load. New post-tensioned cables were fixed to enhance the flexural capacity. The cables were anchored using steel plates at each end and SikaGrout®-212 used to fill voids between plates and concrete surface.

Shear strength was increased using SikaWrap® 103C carbon fibre fabric strips wrapped around the beams and fixed using Sikadur®-301 epoxy adhesive. New methods of calculation were developed to determine the shear capacity of AASHTO beams (I shaped beams).

«The Fibre Reinforced Polymer technique was introduced 12 years ago in Colombia, and was a first in Latin America».

Existing columns were strengthened by increasing the cross sectional area and fixing additional reinforcement. Corroded steel was cleaned and treated using SikaTop® Armatec®-108 corrosion inhibitor.

New corbels were cast in the column abutments to increase beam bearing area. Reinforcing bars were dowelled into the existing concrete and anchored using Sikadur® AnchorFix-4. Hydraulic jacks placed on the new corbels were used to raise the bridge beams so neoprene bearings could be replaced.

Reinforced concrete walls were constructed between the existing pile caps to link them together. Holes were drilled into the existing concrete and reinforcement bars inserted and fixed using Sikadur® AnchorFix-4.

Concrete surfaces were impregnated with Sika® FerroGard®-903 corrosion inhibitor and then painted with SikaColor® 555W flexible acrylic paint.
