From the Editor’s Desk- The second term has started well and the weather has played ball for our

extra-murals bar a couple of rainy afternoons! We held our Parent/Teacher

Interviews and should you have any further queries regarding your child’s

performance during the term, please contact the teacher concerned

through either the Homework Book or via Mrs Kellermann in Reception to

make an appointment. Our Senior grades have all been away on their vari-

ous camps and great fun was had by all. A very big thank you to all the staff

members who leave their families for the 2 nights so that they can provide

many of our children with opportunities of a life time. These childhood

memories of going away on camp are stored in the mind forever!

We hope that you have all enjoyed the recent long weekend with

your families, but now it’s down to some hard work for our children

as exams for Gr 4-7 are just around the corner.

was the theme for the Holy Cross Staff Development. A wonderful afternoon of Artistic Creativity and a strong message of how each member has an integral part to play was heard. This message applies to our Holy Cross family.

“Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.” 1 Corin-thians 12:12 (NIV ). As Holy Cross Primary moves into its next phase under new princi-palship and a new School Governing Body, we need to say: You are part of a whole. Will you make a positive difference to the future of our children and our school?

TENNIS- DAMIEN REACHES PE FINAL FOR BOYS U12: Damien competed in the PE Autumn Tennis Tournament at

the end of April. Out of a field of more than 45 boys’ under12,

Da- mien finished in second place after getting all the way through

to the finals. In the quarter-finals Damien took out the no. 2 seed

and current no.18 in S.A. This event attracted very strong players with

the first 6 seeds all ranked in the Top 30 in S.A. Damien's results in PE

have officially moved him into the Top 30 for Boys u12 in S.A at aged 9.

This is an unbelievable achievement for him and his sponsor Dunlop.

Damien will most likely be competing in the S.A National Junior Tennis

Championships to be held in Bloemfontein over 2 weeks in October.

Congratulations Damien on your recent achievements.

Grade 6 Camp The 24 April finally arrived and the weather forecast for the next three

days seemed to be good. After packing the buses and saying goodbye,

57 excited learners and 3 just as excited teachers headed off on Grade

Six Camp. Our first stop was Eden Adventures in Wilderness, where

we were split into two groups. One group headed off in canoes up-

stream, while the other half walked to a meeting point through the

forest. These groups changed over at halfway and both groups made

their way back to the starting point. Time was short and soon we were

back on the buses heading for Knysna. Here, the ‘Spirit of Knysna’

ferry took us across to Featherbed where we had lunch. After our

meal, we were driven to the top of the eastern head, with some spec-

tacular views along the way. Once at the top, we had to walk the

2.2km scenic walk back to the bottom. After catching the ferry back,

we were on our way to our accommodation and supper in Harkerville.

Wednesday dawned bright and early, and after a sumptuous breakfast,

we headed to Eco-Ed adventures in the Garden of Eden. Here we par-

ticipated in an adventure/obstacle course and learned a bit about the

trees and animals of the Knysna forests. The afternoon was spent at

Wild Waters in Plett. After eating a late lunch, we proceeded to slide

the afternoon away and play putt-putt. Even Mrs Askew braved the

super tube! It was back to Harkerville for supper, and the evening’s

entertainment was a talent show. Mr Puttick was the MC, while the

other teachers were the judges. Much laughter and fun was had by all!

Thursday, and after yet another delicious breakfast and the

packing of buses, we headed for the Knysna

Elephant Park. We started off by viewing the

display area and watching a short video. We

were then taken outside to learn more about

elephants and we also got to touch and feed

the elephants in their natural environment.

From here, we headed back to Eden Adven-

tures in Wilderness. Here, we were divided into smaller groups and

had to use teamwork and problem solving skills to complete a number

of activities. Time soon ran out and we climbed on our buses one last

time to make the short trip back to Holy Cross. Soon we were home

and looking forward to a long weekend to recover!

We have 32 beautiful Bandana blankets ready to do-

nate. Thank you to our wonderful “sewers” and to

each child who donated one or more bandanas. There

are still about 20 bandanas left, so if anyone is keen to make a

blanket, please contact the office.

Rugby– Rugby League -u9 vs St. Mary’s lost 5-10, U 13 vs St. Mary’s lost 12-31 U11 Report. Firstly, I would like to congratulate all the U11 boys who took part in the Hollard Eden Super Series which took place

during the March holidays at George-South. They given very little chance of doing well in the series against well-drilled teams from Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria, but they had surprised all and sundry by lifting the Loerie Trophy when they beat Glenwood House in the final of their section! So far, the U11 boys have been exposed to numerous practice sessions (nine in total), as well as a rugby clinic for all and have played nine matches to date, of which they have lost the first four, drew the next and have won their last four matches. What a remarkable comeback! This should certainly dispel any thought that rugby has received less attention than hockey or cricket this year! The Rugby League has just started and ten matches have been scheduled of which we have won the first match by beating St Mary´s 16-12. Well done, boys, we are extremely proud of you! While Mr Martin Herbst has resigned as head coach, he will continue to

coach the U/13 side. We thank him for all his time, effort and continued sup-

port. Please check the School’s Communicator for further rugby news.

Grade 5’s San Day-On Thursday 26th April, the Gr. 5”s dressed up as San people and ventured out into the garden to put their newly built bows and arrows to the test. Firstly, we had a distance shooting competition. The girls who won this event were Gemma Hodgson– 1st, Kelsey Tiran-2nd and Amy

Launder –3rd. In the boys event, 1st –Lawrance Towsen, 2nd– Joshua Maritz and 3rd– Franco Westraat. Well done, children! We also tried shooting at some targets, like buck, ostrich and guinea fowl. Few managed to hit these targets, but great fun was had by all. We ended this wonderful day by eating sweet melons, reminding us of the Tsama melon eaten by the san people in the desert!

Lost Property– we have a major lunch box and bottle problem at present. We cannot return these items be-cause they are not labelled! This applies to uniform items too! PLEASE CHECK REGULARLY THAT ALL

HOCKEY-Congratulations to the following learners who were chosen for the George side and go forward to the SWD trials. Girls-M. Hou-gaard, M. Marshall, A. Salter, D. Neizel, A Miller, E. de Silva and N.

Coetzee. Boys– C. du Toit, A. Fanizza, Z. Pillay, R. Mullon, P. Cole, J. Boyes, K. Peters and C. Basson. CRICKET– Congratulations to Kirk Nevay who made the final round of trials for the SWD cricket side.

LEOS-At the end of last term, the Leos co-ordinated an Easter Egg Drive for underprivileged creches. More than 2000 eggs were collected by our school, which were distributed to 50 creches in needy communities around George. A big thank you to all those families who generously supported this annual outreach project

HORSE RIDING– Congratulations to the following horse riders who

competed and excelled in the 3rd School League qualifier at the Olym-

pia Estate: C. Callaghan, S. de Villiers, C. de Villiers, G.

Kleu and N.Steyn ! We are very proud of you!

Due to space constraints not all individual sports results are listed in

this letter, but all learners have been acknowledged in Assembly.

Netball– Holy Cross vs. St. Mary’s Primary

U/9 lost 2-5, U/10 lost 1-6, U/11 lost 0-8 , U/12 won 5-4 , U/13 won 5-4. A most successful U/8 and U/9 tour-

nament was held last Saturday at George Prep. While our teams lost their games, the girls tried their best. Well done, girls!

Martial Arts– Wesley Blinkhorn competed in the SWD Clas-

sic Mixed Martial Arts Championships. He won the boys U/14

black belt Open, becoming the black belt Grand Champion. He also

took 1st place in the Boys aged 12-13 categories for points fighting,

traditional weapons and creative weapons! Well done,! Wesley!

We also congratulate Gemma and Ryan Hodgson for their excellent

results in Kick-boxing. Very well done to the both of you!

From the Music Department– We are very proud

of Ashanti van Wyk and Cara-Seugnet Kaboni who

undertook a 20 hour bus trip with the South Cape Children’s

Choir to the Drakensberg to take part in the MIMS Festival.

They received a double standing ovations at their concert!
