SCHOOL NEWS:SCHOOL NEWS:

Woongoolba State School is currently renovating a room to create a school and community Leaders’ Centre.

This is another strategy in the schools: ‘We are leaders’ initiative.

The centre will provide support and information to parents regarding early learning particularly in reading, ideas about child social/emotional development, and details about the school’s leadership strategy as well as information from community support agencies.

There will be a meeting area for parents and visitors, a student learning area and parent lounge. It will also become the new venue for student programs such as Speech and Leadership and Rocket Readers as well as for meetings of the Parents & Citizens Association.

Woongoolba Leaders’ Centre The Leaders’ Centre also links into the Kids Matter program: a national initiative to improve the mental health and well being of children, of which Woongoolba has implemented. This strategy recognises the importance of providing links and resources to parents and the community regarding child development.

Woongoolba is grateful for support from community groups and businesses (including the Jacobs Well Progress Association) to provide funding for the centre.

Woongoolba State School plans to offi cially open the Woongoolba School and Community Leaders’ Centre in the coming weeks.

One afternoon a lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the road-side eating grass.Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and got out to investigate. He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass?""We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied."We have to eat grass.""Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you," the lawyer said."But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree.""Bring them along," the lawyer replied.Turning to the other poor man he stated, "You may come with us, also."The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, "But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!""Bring them all as well," the lawyer answered. They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was.Once under way, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, "Sir, you are too kind.""Thank you for taking all of us with you.The lawyer replied, "Glad to do it. You'll really love my place. The grass is almost a foot high."

Come on now...you really didn't think there was such a thing as a heart-warming lawyer story...did you????

BREEDING FOR PET OWNERS8. Vaccinating and Rehoming Puppies – Part 2What about the mother? She will be happy to leave the nest for longer periods and will probably enjoy increased periods of exercise and physical activity. The pups should be fully weaned by four to eight weeks. When will I be able to place the puppies in homes? Most puppies can be placed in their new homes around eight to twelve weeks of age. With some of the toy breeds, it is usually better to keep them a little longer. This can be up to twelve weeks to ensure a smoother transition to their new home. Puppies should remain together to ensure proper weaning, social development and to allow time for the fi rst vaccination to take effect.

This month I'd like to focus on the 2012 Northern Gold Coast Relay for Life.At a recent meeting of the Jacobs Well Progress Association, a donation to this fundraiser was provided by the Association, for which I'm very grateful. The Relay celebrates survivors, remembers those we've lost and fi ghts to fi nd a cure for cancer. It is the single charity event that I support each year and draw on participation from members of the Division 1 community. The event this year is on 27 October - it starts at 3pm at Coomera Anglican College where teams gather for activities over the ensuing 18 hours. It's not necessary to be there for any length of time although some of us camp out overnight and enjoy a big hot breakfast courtesy of Helensvale Lions on the morning of 28 October. The fundraiser offers the opportunity to meet and talk with survivors who are absolutely inspirational and who provide all the energy necessary to encourage participation. If you would like to join Team Gates, please follow the link below and register. It costs $20 and you will receive a t-shirt in the mail to wear at the walk. Go to: http://www.relayforlife.org.au/

aboutrelayforlife.aspx click on JOIN, select

Qld for State and 2012 for Relay year, under "Find a Location in your State", choose Northern Gold Coast - then "join". Tick the accept the waiver box and then Join a Team. Enter TEAM GATES in the Search by Team Name and place a dot in the box on the right side. Then complete personal details. I would really value your support and look forward to a fun night (with bbq, slushies courtesy of Nigel Weise - tent courtesy Cr William Owen Jones - and don't forget your pillow and sleeping bag if you intend staying over, because you'll need a kip!) On another note, congratulations to Don Waters, Nigel Weise, Graham Quill and Olaf Tiemann on forming the 2012/13 Jacobs Well Progress Association committee. These people put in a great effort for our community and I look forward to supporting their efforts in the year ahead. Regards Donna.Donna GatesCouncillor Division 1 & Deputy Mayor

Health & HappinessThe PomegranateThe Pomegranate

Those deliciously sensual and juicy red ‘berries’… Mmm, the Pomegranate. This beautiful exotic fruit is one of

the earliest found in history, dating as far back as 4000 B.C. It has been used around the world for nutritional and medicinal purposes, in particular, for infl ammation. Today, the Pomegranate’s health benefi ts have only been discovered in recent years by modern medicine, the greatest one being that it is a powerful antioxidant, reportedly 2–3 times stronger than that of green tea and red wine. Antioxidants help the body to fi ght against cancer, heart disease, premature aging and other diseases and conditions. From much research they have found that the juice of the Pomegranate has potent free-radical abilities increasing the plasma antioxidant capacity to over 30%. It has also proven to be benefi cial in a multitude of ways, including the reduction of cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) by reducing and ceasing LDL oxidation; reduces blood pressure; stops blood clots forming by stopping the platelets from clumping together; improves cell formation; and balances pH levels. The juice has also found to be affective in the fi ght against prostrate, breast and uterine cancers via prevention and slowing the growth; and reduces the painful infl ammation of Osteoarthritis.

In addition, it is believed that this ‘miracle’ fruit may have antiviral and antibacterial qualities against dental plaque when drinking the juice, and can also assist in easing Menopausal symptoms and effects.

The health benefi ts are due to the fact that the entire fruit (the fl esh, juice and seed oil) is rich in vitamins, antioxidants and fatty acids; it is high in vitamin B including pantholenic acid (B5), vitamins A, C, E and potassium, antioxidant polyphenols; and fi ber. It has also been discovered that the pressed seed oil contains phytoestrogen and the Omega-5, Myristoleic Fatty Acid.

There are however some precautions to be aware of as Pomegranate juice has similar effects to grapefruit juice in that it can interfere with certain medications. Also during the fi rst 3 months of pregnancy women should avoid taking the seed oil supplements. It is always best to consult a physician if you fall under any of these categories before you consume Pomegranate.

Pomegranate juice can be easily incorporated into a person’s diet, as it is simply one cup of juice per day that needs to be consumed. Research has discovered that just a cup of juice daily for three months can improve a person’s health dramatically. It is available in good supermarkets and health food stores year round, and the fruit is seasonally available between October and January. Be aware when buying the juice to look for 100% juice without sugar, corn syrup or other similar fi llers. The seed oil is available as a nutritional supplement or as a dropper to be administered directly to infl amed, cracked or dry skin. It can also be found in cleansing bars and creams.

acquire without meanness.

The government has also frozen car registration for family cars for the next three years. In so doing we have removed some cost-of-living pressures that affect Queenslanders each and every day.

The government has implemented a $15,000 ongoing boost for fi rst home buyers who want to build their own home.

In relation to health I constantly receive complaints from constituents suffering severe pain whilst they are stuck on waiting lists. The government has committed to turning waiting lists around by implementing strategies to reduce them. In 2013, we are implementing strategies to ensure that the ambulance ramping issue will be drastically reduced.

In relation to public transport, commuters will get free trips after a nine trips. That means for regular commuters, who travel 5 days a week on public transport, their fi nal commute for the week will be free. They can also then travel for free on all subsequent trips in that seven day period. I am also pushing for a regular bus service the area.

In the next 12 months, 100 new police offi cers have been committed to Logan, Coomera and Gold Coast police districts.

I hope you agree, this fi rst Campbell Newman led LNP Government Budget will ensure Queenslanders, no matter where they live, benefi t through better, more effi cient services, a lower cost of living and strong economic management.

PLEASE REMEMBERI am your representative for the State Seat of Coomera. I am here to assist you with any State Government matters and I look forward to the positive changes that are being made and will continue to be made for all Queenslanders.Call me: 1800 224 650Fax: 5514 0634Email: [email protected]: crandon4coomera.com.au

GREETINGS EVERYONEThe 2012 State Budget was delivered on Tuesday the 11th of September by the Queensland Treasurer Tim Nicholls. I outline below a number of benefi ts to the people of the Coomera Electorate. Some of these measures impact on the wider Gold Coast community and others also benefi t people in the electorates of Albert, Waterford and Springwood to our west and north.

There is funding of $570,000 to improve the intersection of Stapylton Jacobs Well Road and Quinns Hill Road. This is quite a dangerous intersection, and I know that local people will be pleased to see some improvements.

Millions of dollars will be invested in the Coomera Electorate and surrounding area to improve the situation faced by people needing social housing.

There is also $1.3 million for planning work related to the Foxwell Road (exit 54) interchange.

Another measure of benefi t to all of us is the long-awaited $2.16 million for the Coomera Ambulance Station which will be up and running in no time at all.

The government continues to be committed to the M1 upgrade and other works on the M1. These improvements will make a difference to all of the people who use the M1, not just the people in the local area. I continue to lobby for funding for the bottle neck at exit 38 and the roundabout.

Importantly, about $37 million will be going into three schools in the Coomera electorate. Some $30 million will go to the new Pimpama State Secondary College, where many young people living around Jacobs Well will attend. A further $8 million will go towards upgrades at Ormeau Woods State High School, where young people living in the Woongoolba region attend.

There is about $4 million available for disability services in the Coomera electorate stretching up to Logan city.

The government has fulfi lled its promise by freezing tariff 11 electricity prices for this fi nancial year. This took a bit of doing but in the end we won the day for the people of South-East Queensland.

I never really liked the terminology "Old Farts" but this makes me feel better about it. And if you ain't one, I bet ya you know one! I got this from an "Old Fart" friend of mine! OLD FART PRIDE I'm passing this on as I did not want to be the only old fart receiving it. Actually, it's not a bad thing to be called, as you will see.• Old Farts are easy to spot at sporting events; during the playing of the National Anthem. Old Farts remove their caps and stand at attention and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. • Old Farts remember World War II, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy and Hitler. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing. They remember the 50 plus Peacekeeping Missions from 1945 to 2005, not to mention Vietnam. • If you bump into an Old Fart on the sidewalk he will apologize. If you pass an Old Fart on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old Farts trust strangers and are courtly to women. • Old Farts hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection.

• Old Farts get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don't like any fi lth or dirty language on TV or in movies. • Old Farts have moral courage and personal integrity. They seldom brag unless it's about their children or grandchildren. • It's the Old Farts who know our great country is protected, not by politicians, but by the young men and women in the military serving their country.

This country needs Old Farts with their work ethic, sense of responsibility, pride in their country and decent values.

We need them now more than ever.

Thank God for Old Farts!

Pass this on to all the "Old Farts" you know. I was taught to respect my elders….It's just getting harder to fi nd them.

Paddy was a youthful and hard working Irishman at a Coastal village in Ireland . Daily he would pole a heavy old punt out to sea then work a heavy iron grapple to bring up the sand oysters which he sold to the local ice works. He was a man of regular habits he always arrived home each day at a certain time. Sadly, Paddy did not realise the heavy grappling was taking a toll on a faulty heart. One day he failed to come home so his wife contacted the police to investigate him being missing. They rowed out and found Paddy dead in the punt beside him a huge grapple full of oysters he'd tried to hoist aboard.

Beenleigh and District. THE MOST GLORIOUS, MOST PRODUCTIVE AND MOST INDUSTRIOUS PROVMCE IN THE QUEEN

STATE OF THE COMMONWEALTHSUGAR. With the expansion of the sugar industry throughout the district a larger and more up-to date mill was soon found necessary. When Mr. W. H. Heck took the business over he set about enlarging the structure, and when the Government decided to sell the Central mill at Benowa, in 1906 Mr. Heck became its purchaser. The whole of the plant was taken down and removed to Pimpama Island and re-erected there. Today the mill is one of the best equipped privately owned concerns of its kind in Queensland, with a capacity of over 40,000 tons annually, which is a big step from only 800 tons in 1890. Tram lines have been put down, and the cane is hauled from distant points by means of locomotive power to the mill.

ARROWROOT. Arrowroot growing is extensively undertaken by many of the farmers, to treat which. Arrowroot Mills are in existence at Norwell. Pimpama Island. Ormeau and Pimpama. Arrowroot was grown by many of the early settlers and improvised plants were erected to treat the blubs

for their own use. Clark's Arrowroot mill at Pimpama is one of the largest and most up to date in the area, and the plant is capable of turning out the most perfect article. The Clark families have been manufacturing arrowroot for over 37 years and are now crushing up to 150 tons a year. Rice also was grown chiefly on Pimpama Island, where a mill was erected to treat the product. it grew well on the drained swamp land, but other crops were found more profitable, and the industry gradually died out.

DARIYING No better evidence of the importance of the dairying industry to the Beenleigh district, and its rapid expansion, could be had than that afforded by a perusal of the returns, showing the operations of the Southern Queensland Dairy Co. Ltd.established 24 years ago: the Company has made wonderful progress. Considering that it started with a capital of only £2.000 and a mere handful of suppliers. Today a new modern factory is just completed and the Company's assets exceed £60,000. The present Board of Directors is comprised of the following:- Messer’s A.W. Kibble (chairman) J.J. Johns,W. G. Foxwell. A.J. Caswell and J. D. Andrews, with W. G. Winnett as Secretary: and it was under this directorate that the new factory buildings were designed and came into existence. Last year the butter manufactured was 2,398 tons, and butter value £365,000. (We continue this series in the next issue)Page 5 Page 6

Another busy month at VMR Jacobs Well with plenty of calls for assistance. Boats slipping

moorings, engines failing to start, fl at batteries, boats run aground are typical reasons for our call outs. The Annual General Meeting was held in September with the committee for the year being elected. John Ranizowski was elected as the new President and we all wish him the best for his new role; he has our full support for this volunteer position which will keep him very busy!Recently, VMR Jacobs Well had three of its rescue vessels fi tted with a new tracking device called AIS (Automatic Identifi cation System), this system enables vessels to be tracked during Search & Rescue procedures as well allowing vessels to be tracked whether it be for guidance purposes or just monitoring the waterways. The system allows AIS Base Stations and other ships to monitor and obtain information of a vessel or a Search and Rescue Aircraft. Typical information monitored is identifi cation, position, course and speed. The VMR is here to provide assistance to vessels on the water, such as towing back to location of origin or simply provide a helping jump-start to a vessel to allow it to continue its journey. Like roadside assistance, VMR Jacobs Well provides this service to its members free of charge with an annual membership of only $70. So why not become a member and in turn you will be helping our Squadron to remain operational to provide other vital services such as medical response to the sick and injured. A highly trained section of operational members at VMR Jacobs Well have become Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS)

A Brief History of Personal Computing – Part IIThe PC Bible, Psalm 23

As I walk in the valley of the shadow of silicon, I will fear no innovation: For Apple art with me; thy iPad and thy GUI they comfort me.

When it comes to innovation, few can hold a candle to the boys from Apple. Though only Steve Jobs gets a mention nowadays, let’s not forget the real technical wizard behind Apple’s early success, Steve Wozniak. He singlehandedly designed and built the fi rst Apple I and II computers, mostly in his garage, while Steve Jobs, even at this early stage, was the “ideas man” and handled marketing and capital raising. Apple’s early computers were a hit with enthusiasts, but did not sell particularly well. With the introduction of the fi rst “killer app”, the spreadsheet program VisiCalc, sales fi nally took off. In January 1977, less than a year after its inception, Apple was incorporated. IBM released its fi rst personal computer in 1979, running Microsoft’s MS-DOS operating system. It was aimed at the business market and Apple responded in 1980 with the Apple III. It was a commercial failure and Apple never managed to break into the general business market in any meaningful way. Why Apple went on to become the rip-roaring success it is today is somewhat of a mystery. No doubt a fateful visit by Apple engineers to the Xerox research lab just down the road had something to do with it. Steve Jobs had

IT TALK managed to extract a few days of unrestricted access for his engineers to see what Xerox researchers were working on.What they were working on was a Graphical User Interface, GUI for short and it would alter the course of computing history. From here on in Apple would claim the GUI to be their baby and in a way I don’t blame them. For it took the genius of Steve Jobs to recognise its importance! Despite rather disappointing (and some say notoriously over-reported) sales fi gures, Apple’s 1982 share fl oat was an incredible success, bringing in loads of capital, which was used to fi nance further research and development. Apple’s fi rst GUI based computer, the LISA, was released in 1983, a commercial fl op due to its high price. Infi ghting at Apple headquarters had seen Steve Jobs kicked off the LISA team and he was now overseeing the development of a lower cost successor, the Apple Macintosh. The Apple Macintosh was launched during the 1984 American Super Bowl with a stunning TV commercial* produced by Ridley Scott, of Alien & Blade Runner fame. The marketing style used in the launch of the Macintosh was to be the hallmark of Apple under the control of Steve Jobs.

Yet, despite all the hype and popular acclaim, by 1993 Apple was close to bankruptcy! What had happened? Steve Jobs, the man with the Midas touch, had squandered hundreds of millions developing products that never made it to market

1515or were a commercial fl op. His volatile management style and demanding personality, as well as the culture of geeky independence by key Apple employees didn’t help. In the end, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, got the sack! A lesser man might have been crushed, but Steve Jobs was made of sterner stuff. He went on to found or buy a number of businesses like Pixar and NeXt, a company specialising in the higher education market. Crucially, NeXT developed a Unix based operating system (with a GUI, of course) called NeXTSTEP. Meanwhile, back at the Apple ranch, the new management team did not manage at all well and by 1997 Steve Jobs was begged to come back to mamma! He put his new operating system with that gorgeous GUI, the envy of Apple’s competitors, to good use and Steve Jobs was back in business! Whether he had learned from his mistakes or just had extraordinary good luck, we may never know. Anyhow, Apple’s new range of super stylish Macintoshes and super slim notebooks were a hit and fi nally started to sell well. At the 2007 Macworld convention, after one of his trademark presentations full of new products, Steve Jobs fi nally walked off the stage to thunderous applause. But he was not fi nished! With carefully choreographed absentmindedness, he returned to the stage and produced from his pocket a device he called “iPhone”. A stunned audience watched on a giant screen as Steve Jobs put the iPhone through its paces. He tapped those cute icons on that brilliant touch screen GUI, he made those scrolling tables bounce a little when hitting the end. He swiped and pinched the screen, took photos, made a call, you name it. The audience, his disciples, went wild. Steve Jobs had descended from the mountain to hand them a tiny tablet. Not with rules to confi ne them but to set them free! The

rest, as they say, is history...6 years later Steve Jobs was dead! But not before turning Apple into one of the most profi table companies of all time! He gave us the Macintosh, iMac, iPhone, iPad. iTunes and lastly, the iCloud. He made Apple the most recognised brand on the planet.

He was a genius, he was fl awed, he was a visionary; he was one extraordinary human being!

Thank you to everybody who assisted in the rescue of my absconding ginger cat.

Thanks to Renae and Dene, Emma, Steve and Charmaine and to Rupert for deciding to decorate the lamp post near the drain from where the Fire Brigade officers hauled one grubby, relieved, ginger cat after they were notified by the R.S.P.C.A.

A big thank you to Councillor Donna Gates for organizing to have this drain "cat proofed" to prevent further mishaps.

Sincerely Colleen Schneider.

Firstly, a big thanks to all of those who assisted at our annual working bee recently. We had a record

turnout with over 20 participants taking part. We were very appreciative and excited by the number of local youngsters that volunteered their time. Our nursery was given a makeover and specialist plants are now ready to deliver to schools for their programs. The party also got to work in revegetating Behms Forest. The forest is really starting to take shape. An increase in animal species has been recorded which is great to see. Thankyou again to the Jacobs Well EEC Advisory Council for all their work.

We have just recently been involved in an amazing program called Bunya to Bay. 23 year 9 students

Jacobs Well Environmental Education CentreEducation Queensland

Jacobs Well EEC News from around the state were selected as river ambassadors. For 2 weeks, these students hiked, biked and paddled the length of the Brisbane River from the Bunya region to Moreton Bay. Their job was to assess the health of the catchment by testing water quality and recording their results on a website for their student colleagues to follow. We were able to join the students on their last day to transport them on our boat to the mouth of the river to culminate their journey. They all had exciting stories about their learning experience. What a great way to learn – through real life experiences.
