We all are awarethat the Lok Sabhaholds a very importantplace in the political hi-erarchy of India andplays a major part inmapping out how ourcountry functions andprogresses. I have beencontinuously watchingalmost all the sessionof proceedings of Loksabha. Red salute toour LS speaker OmBirla for handling thehouse in a very niceand planned manner.Really, he is an amia-ble speaker and has anexcellent ability tomake connections andcontrol the membersin Lok sabha. We haveseen him maintainingthe discipline and theorder in the Lok Sab-ha and he also acts asa mediator in case ofany nasty arguments. He is performing hisduties as speaker inLok Sabha as a non-partisan speaker andaccording to moralsand traditions; aspeaker cannot be in-cluded in a party orcannot be bounded byany party’s guidelines.

Birla had promisedto run the House in animpartial manner andto safeguard the inter-ests of the members ir-respective of thestrength of their par-ties in the House andhe is fulfilling hispromise. In his speech,he assures the mem-bers that they would be“heard” and that thehouse respondsthem. The Speaker isthe constitutional andceremonial head of theHouse. He is the prin-cipal spokesperson ofthe House. Modi de-serves a big applauseand our country and

NaMo’s superb choice ofOm Birla as Speaker of LS

the members of LokSabha are having sucha distinguished person-ality as the Speaker ofthe House. Om Birla isthe product of studentpolitics, who alsoserved as state presi-dent of the BharatiyaJanata Yuva Morcha.

Pandit JawaharlalNehru, one of the chiefarchitects of India’sfreedom and a movingforce behind its Consti-tution, placed the officeof the Speaker in Indiain the proper contextand he rightly said that“The Speaker repre-sents the House. He/she represents the dig-nity of the House, thefreedom of the Houseand because the Houserepresents the nation,in a particular way,the Speaker becomes asymbol of nation’s free-dom and liberty. Therefore, that shouldbe an honoured posi-tion, a free positionand should be occupiedalways by persons ofoutstanding ability andimpartiality.” This istrue for Om Birlawhich he deserveswhile watching his con-tribution to the smoothconduct of every ses-sion.

Om Birla has beenin public life for years, starting as a studentleader and has beencontinuously servingthe society. He hadplayed a very vital rolein the transformationand overall develop-ment of Kota in Rajas-than. Om Birla is amember of the Stand-ing Committee on En-ergy in Parliament, member of Committeeon Petitions and Con-sultative Committeefor Ministry of SocialJustice and Empower-ment. Birla has been

associated with theRashtriya Swayamse-vak Sangh since hewas a student in school. His public life hadstarted with the post ofPresident of the Stu-dents Association inthe Gumanpura SeniorSecondary School. Helater became the jointsecretary at the Rajas-than College of Com-merce, Kota. He wasBJYM Kota districtpresident for over 4years. He went on tobecome the BJYMstate president for over6 years and then theNational Vice Presidentof BJYM for over 6years. He is wellknown in Rajasthan forhis welfare and chari-ty initiatives. Birlahad also started theproject of ‘Rain Basera’(night shelters) in Kotawhere the poor andhomeless are providedshelter, mattress andblankets for the nightduring winters.

Our PM Modi hasalso remembered hislong association withthe newly electedSpeaker. He under-lined Om Birla’s dedi-cation to service andhis contributions to-wards the rebuildingefforts in Kutch afterthe earthquake andKedarnath after thefloods. Modi also as-sured the Speaker thathe would receive fullcooperation of the mem-bers in conducting theproceedings of theHouse successfully.

People of India hadalso expected Om Bir-la to be “more respon-sible and answerable inthe House” and thatwhat we see today.

Rising road accident - A cause for concern

In the recent past, road accidents involving two wheeler ridersare increasing at an alarming pace all over the place. While rashdriving, violation of traffic rules etc. are the prime reasons for theincrease in the road accidents, driving after consuming liquor isanother major cause, which has not been seriously considered tillnow.

Long smooth stretches like the Palm Beach Marg allow thedrivers to push the accelerators just for the thrill. The desire be-comes more strong, especially amongst youngsters, after gettingtipsy, or in the company of friends. It is seen that usually whenev-er there is serious accident, one of the drivers is in drunken state. So far, in the absence of proper equipment, the RTO officials wereunable to penalize the offenders. Now equipped with breath ana-lyzers, the task has become easier. These drives should be con-ducted periodically especially at strategic locations. If implement-ed strictly, it would help in curbing the tendency to drive afterconsuming liquor.

Along with stringent measures against drunken drivers, theRTO should also initiate action for not wearing helmets. Whilethe All India Road Safety Programme Implementation Committeeset up by MOST, has recommended use of helmets as mandatoryfor two wheeler drivers, it has not been seriously implemented.

The use of helmets mitigates to a large extent the fatality of theaccidents. It is difficult to understand why this is not being fol-lowed by the motorists themselves when the rule has been framedfor their own safety? Probably, it is the tendency to defy rules, which forces us not to follow rules and regulations. Earlier, rulesof compulsory wearing of seat belts while driving four wheelers orprohibiting talking on mobile phones while driving, also could notbe implemented strictly due to callous nature of the motorists andthe enforcing authorities. It is highly essential that in view of therising accidents, the motorists themselves realize the gravity ofdrunken driving and the peril of not wearing helmets. The author-ities on their part, should continue their drives as these wouldhelp in instilling traffic discipline amongst the motorists. Only trafficdiscipline coupled with safety devices such as helmets and seatbelts can save precious lives.

Though the road condition in Navi Mumbai & Pan-vel are better as compared to Mumbai, potholes are stilla major concern for all the motorists. Immediate solu-tion to this problem is using Shelmac which is an overthe counter instant repair pre-mix for permanent re-pair of potholes, cracks & depressions. A 50 kgs readyto use cold mix is inexpensive. If civic authorities areunable to attend to these problems due to different rea-sons, this cost effective & inexpensive method will help

resolve problems of motorists to a great extent.Dhiraj Ahuja, Business, Nerul

Your views on the condition of roads

Road conditions are bad on the highways of our satel-lite city. Repaired roads don’t last for more than 6 to 8months and are back with potholes causing damage tovehicles plying on them.

Shankarlal Gupta, Business, Nerul

Road condition in Navi Mumbai area is very poorespecially during and after the monsoons the roads arebadly damaged and drains get also damaged. The cov-erings of the manholes are dislodged. Quite frequentlythese broken drains and uncovered manholes becomethe cause for the accidents. Such type of accidents canbe stopped by making good quality roads and timelyrepair of broken roads. The departments responsiblefor the maintenance of roads should act proactively and

ensure road safety. Anuj Kumar Pandey, Activist, Nerul, Ekta Vihar Society

Over a decade now, we have observed a major shift inpopulation from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. A huge spuris also noticed in rise of educational institutions, malls, wholesale markets. Even though Navi Mumbai is a wellplanned city, the poor condition of roads have put it toshame. The torrential rains have raised questions onthe maintenance of roads even after citizens are payingthe tolls & taxes diligently. The general responsibility ofthe local Corporators, government is also spreading dis-satisfaction. Not only the private and public vehicles are prone to damagebut a rise in number of accidents is also a concern now. The peak hourtraffic has become a nuisance with noise pollution, breaking of road rules. With the oncoming festival of Ganesha, as a Navi Mumbai resident, Iwish to look forward to perfect, smooth roads to welcome Lord Ganesha &a happy safe environment for all.Poonam R. Khairnar, Counselor, Sanpada

The roads are not that great. During monsoon theywear out quickly. Because of this roads become full ofpotholes leading to traffic jams. Bad roads also lead tolife threatening accidents. NMMC should at least makethe main roads concrete to improve road condition.

JanmashtamiCelebrated by Hindus all over the world, Jan-

mashtami sees the coming together of people fromall walks of life immersing themselves in themirth of the festival.

The story of Krishna’s birth is as fascinating as the events that tookplace during his life time. According to Hindu mythology, when evil andimmoral forces took over the world, mother earth pleaded with LordBrahma to bring an end to the prevailing conditions. Lord Brahma thenasked Lord Vishnu for help, who proclaimed that he will soon take birthto banish all evil from the earth.

This Janmashtami let us all hail Lord Krishna and absorb his teach-ings in our life.
