GENERAL ACCIDENTSCHOLARS

KAYLA BELNAVIS

Kayla Belnavis is one of two winners of the inau-gural Gen-eral Accident Open Scholarship Program in 2012 from a list of over twenty-seven (27) applicants. She is a student of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus reading for her first degree in Geology. Kayla was born in St. Andrews and moved to the awesome parish of St. James (according to her) at a very young age and became a past student of St. James Prep, Westwood High School and Montego Bay Com-munity College. The following is an interview with this intri-guing young lady that will allow you to learn more about this NMJ Scholar - Kayla “Awesome” Belnavis.

Who is Kayla “Awesome” Belnavis?I am 23 years of age. I was born in St Andrew but moved to the awesome city of Montego Bay at the age of 4 to live with my grandparents and mother. In Mon-tego Bay I lived close to the sea and love the sea breeze especially on a windy day; this is where my love for the ocean comes from. Growing up with my grandparents was fun & interesting. My heritage can be traced back to Maroon roots, indentured Indians and Scottish trav-elers.

What was it like converting from College to the UWI and why did you choose UWI?It was not hard for me to move from College to UWI. Being a boarder at Montego Bay Community College for 5 years made the transition of leaving home (once more) really easy. The challenge was to become dis-ciplined enough to study on my own….in college our study timed was scheduled, missed study time and you face punishment if you did not have a good reason. Furthermore, I chose UWI because it was the onlytertiary level institution that offered a degree in Geol-ogy.

Why did you chose Geology?I am currently pursuing my degree in Geology. Since high school I found an interest in Geography (my ge-ography teacher helped a lot in that passion) and was fond of preserving the environment. That love and pas-sion followed me through community college to UWI where I continue to love my field of study….the dynam-ic of the earth really interests me but is very challeng-ing keeping up with the everyday changes.

What motivates you?

The need to excel in whatever task that I have to com-plete and the want to make living for my mother and family comfortable

16

Who is your mentor and why?I have three (3) major mentors: My mother, grand-mother & Barack Obama. My mother because she is such a talented person and keeps trying at what she does best; she never allows a bad situation to get the best of her and she always encourages me to do my best and finish everything that I start. My grandmother because she was very hospitable and loved to teach her skills to anyone that was interested or willing to learn. She was always there for me….every time I went home form high school or UWI grandma was there and always had something positive to say. Her favorite line to everyone was “Keep the faith, trust God & always pray”Barack Obama because I would one day like to be able to speak and influence people….he is a very charismat-ic leader and when he speaks it gives you hope of a better future.

What is it like academically and socially attending the UWI?Academically: challenging! You have to keep at it, try never to give up or let low grades pull you back. You have to keep fighting to stay above the work load…proper time management will help in that regard. Even though it is hard when you get a good grade you feel like you are on top of the world because you know you worked hard for it and deserved it. Learning is fun once you understand what is being taught; but one thing ev-eryone should know is, at UWI, you have to READ for your degree. Lecturers are not going to tell or give you everything. And the more knowledge you can gain on your own, the better the impression you can make on your exam or thesis papers.Socially: interesting & educational! There are so many different cultures at UWI that every day you learn something or meet someone new. Living on the largest hall also added to this experience. Outside of academic it has helped me develop skills that I never thought I would have. Planning an event is hard especially if you have to cater for close to 900 people, but at the end when everything comes together you have a feeling of accomplishment that leaves you on a high…especially if the event was a success.

What are your future goals after complet-ing your first de-gree?I would like to gain local experience in my field (Ge-ology), so I always wanted to work on a project…any kind of project that is geologically or environmentally related. I have my mind set on doing my masters in

something practical that could be applied to living in Jamaica….Disaster Management is one that I think of everyday even though I would like to have my masters in Oceanography.

What are your hobbies?Reading (love to read), watching football (Real Madrid is my team), listening to music (every genre that you can think of), baking (second profession) and swim-ming (recreational)

Why did you apply for the General Acci-dent Scholarship?I saw the opportunity. When I got the email to pass along to other residents of my hall and after I did, I thought “why not?!” After applying it made me think of the employment possibilities with insurance com-panies.

What is your opinion of the donor – Gen-eral Accident? The company is very dynamic, growing fast, becom-ing a popular household name in Jamaica (I got my mother to switch her insurance company to General Accident) and they are doing more than providing in the business sector but also helping with the develop-ment of the country on a holistic level.

What would you do if you are given one million dollars?First pay off my Student Loan and any loan outstand-ing for my mother and whatever is left invest it in my personal dream of owning a Café.

What advice do you have for students or other individuals looking to pursue similar goals?Go after your goal, financially it may be difficult but don’t allow that to stop you. The aim is to educate yourself so you make yourself marketable to other companies or investors. There are MANY scholarships in Jamaica. Do not only go for the popular ones be-cause the probability of you getting that scholarship may be very small. Apply for everyone that you see, even if you believe your GPA does not fit the require-ment…..nothing beats a trial but a failure!

GENERAL ACCIDENTSCHOLARS

CORY ANDERSON

Cory Anderson is the second of two winners of the inaugural General Accident Open Scholarship Program in April 2012 from a list of over twentyseven (27) ap-plicants. Like the other winner, Cory is a student of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Sci-ence with an impressive 3.99 GPA. He was born and grew up in Kingston in the early 90s, Cory attended Our Lady of the Angels Preparatory but left after two years to attend Quest Preparatory, he then moved on to continue his education at Meadowbrook High school and matriculated to the University of the West Indies, Mona. The following is an interview with this NMJ scholar that will allow you to learn more about his motives and achievements.

Who is Cory Anderson?I am 20 years old and was born in Kingston, Jamaica on April 10, 1992. I grew up in Kingston but spent many of my summer and winter holidays in Portland with my grandparents, cousins and other family members.

What was it like converting from high school to the UWI?Matriculating to UWI was quite an experience. At first it seemed somewhat easy but it suddenly became more difficult and the difference between secondary and tertiary education became more distinguished. I was not familiar with registering online for courses, nor was I familiar with the location of the classes on this huge Mona campus. The work load increased and a new level of discipline and dedication was required. Nonetheless, the conversion took place smoothly.

What course of study you are currently pursing and why?I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science. The field of actuarial science seems to cover the subjects that I am passionate about, es-pecially Mathematics. It is a challenging field that I be-lieve will push me to become a positive influence on my society. It is my desire to become an actuary and aid in the development of my country.

What motivates you?My family motivates me! I always desire to be able to give back to my parents for all that they have done, and I believe that with a good education and career, I can financially give back to my family. Another motiva-tion comes from the personal satisfaction I get when I do my best. It is a great feeling to have done your best; to know, that whatever happens, you did your

best. And like many others, prizes or rewards motivate me. Whether it is an extrinsic reward that others can see such as: being able to attain a spot on the Dean’s List or becoming valedictorian, or an intrinsic reward such as: learning in the classroom so that you are better able to help your country, rewards help to motivate.

Who is your mentor and why?My mentor would be Mr. Lucien Reid. He is a teacher at Meadowbrook High School and an elder at the Mead-owbrook United Church. While I was attending Mead-owbrook High, he would always encourage me to take on leadership roles. He took an interest in me then, and even now, he still advises me in making important deci-sions. Furthermore, he supports me through prayer and helps me in my walk as a Christian. He is an exceptional mentor who upholds high moral value, sets a good ex-ample for young men everywhere and encourages me to do my absolute best, always putting God first.

What is it like academically and socially at-tending the UWI?The UWI is filled with brilliant teachers and students. This often promotes an academically competitive atmo-sphere. Nonetheless, there are many teachers and stu-dents who are willing to help you achieve your goals. Moreover, at UWI, there are students from across a wide region, not just locally but internationally. This allows students to learn about other cultures and become even more rounded as individuals about to enter the working world.

What are your future goals after your first de-gree?After completing my first degree, I plan to do one of two things. Either work in the field of actuarial science while finishing my actuarial science exams, or, with the help of a scholarship, go abroad to complete a master’s degree, while doing my actuarial science exams.

What are your hobbies?I enjoy playing sports such as: basketball and football, and instruments such as: the drum, piano and bass gui-tar. I also enjoy spending time with friends, like watching a good game of dominoes.

Why did you apply for the General Accident Scholarship?I applied for the General Accident Scholarship because I was in need of financial assistance. Upon examining the criteria of the scholarship, I realized that I had met them and with the hope of being awarded the scholarship, I applied.

What is your opinion of the donor – General Accident?General Accident is an excellent company! They clearly understand the importance of education and have been giving back to Jamaican youth more in recent times through Next Move Jamaica. They not only care about Jamaica’s present, by providing quality competitive prod-ucts with excellent service, but also the future, by sup-porting youth’s education.

What would you do if you are given one mil-lion dollars? If I were awarded one million Jamaican dollars, the first thing I would do would be to repay the Students’ Loan Bureau. However, if this debt did not exist, I would use some of the funds to aid in the development of my high school, Meadowbrook High. I believe that education is an integral ingredient to any successful recipe for Jamaican difficulties, and as such, funds would have to be diverted to this area. I would also love to develop more structured shelters for the homeless. Far too many homeless indi-viduals are seen on the streets destitute, with nowhere to go. Even in the recent Hurricane Sandy, many of them stayed outside in the midst of heavy rains, strong winds and debris. With more shelters that not only provide a place to stay and food to eat, but also education, so that the homeless can be empowered to stand on their own, I believe that this country will be a better place.

What advice do you have for students or other individuals looking to pursue similar goals?Find something that you both enjoy doing and do well. Before thinking about what career pays the most, think about what you enjoy doing and what you do best. Then try to identify a career in that field that will compensate you for your work. You will find that doing something that you love and are good at, can be far more rewarding than simply doing a job that pays. Also, having found a career you would like to pursue, ascertain information about that career from persons in that field. It is good to know exactly what you are striving for and what it is you can expect. Moreover, be focused and diligent. Along with hard work and commitment, you will need these charac-teristics to achieve your goal. Last, but by no means least, include God in all your plans. Put Him first, for it is by Him that you will achieve success and accomplish your goals.

SCHOLARSHIP TIP #1Apply early for Scholarships

Scholarships are gifts of financial aid to students that are not required to be repaid from entities that

wish to contribute to education. Although thou-sands of scholarship go unissued annually, there

are some that are always oversubscribed and some that are first-come first-serve. Your wining hand is

to apply early!

Start searching for scholarships as soon as possi-ble. Don’t wait until January of your senior year in high school or while at university to start search-ing, or you’ll miss half the deadlines. There are

many scholarships available to students in grades 10 and 11 or while in any year at university, not just high school seniors. Continue searching for scholar-

ships even after you are enrolled in univer-sity or college.

To be successful, one needs to start the scholar-ship search early – at least one year before enroll-

ment. This allow you the time to search all possi-ble avenues, whether it be through the schools web-site, nextmoveja.com or NMJInternation-al.com, government agency, referral, your employer, club or association. Peruse newspapers and make note of previous winners and donating agency, contact

them for information about the next issuing period.

Explore our websites (www.nextmoveja.com and www.NMJInternational.com) and register as a

member for FREE to receive weekly updates of new and current scholarships. Additionally, use the so-

cial media networks to follow foundations, agencies and associations that offer scholarships for daily

updates on financing opportunities. Applying these strategies will give you first preference to apply for these scholarships before they are oversubscribed.

It is important to remember that applying early means applying for the scholarship when it is OPEN,

be the first to apply! Scholarships have an OPEN and CLOSING date; most are from November 1 to May 30 annually (this may vary by donor). Don’t

apply October because you want to be the first to apply, compose your essay (if required), and prac-tice your interview techniques while you wait for

opening date.

Scholarship Tip # 2:Don’t Apply to Every Scholarship

It might make sense to apply to every scholarship that comes your way but consider our advice to

apply only to a few scholarships. This will not only save you time and effort but also help you improve

your chances in getting a scholarship. This advice follows the Pareto Principle or the

80/20 Rule. Applying this principle in scholarship application, it is wise to apply only to 20% of avail-able scholarships that would give you 80% chance

of success. As a Jamaican student, looking for a first year undergraduate scholarship in Engineering at the University of Technology, Jamaica. After your

extensive search on Nextmoveja.com and through other sources, you were able to find 26 scholar-

ships that are available for Jamaicans in that faculty.

Following the advice above, you will try to focus on applying to 5-8 scholarships that gives you higher chances of success. The question now is, how do

you pick the scholarships you should apply to? This question can be answered by considering the

following criteria:Which among the 26 scholarships you found are

specifically targeted to first year Jamaican students?

Which among the 26 scholarships are aligned to your qualifications?

Which among the 26 scholarships prioritize the study programme you are applying for?

The ideal scholarship you are looking for is a scholarship program that is targeted specifically to Jamaicans, whose eligibility requirements matches your qualifications, and if possible, whose priority

programs include first year undergraduate students.

Applying to a scholarship that is matched to your citizenship, qualifications, and interests generally gives you better chances. As well, applying only to a few scholarships gives you more time to make a great scholarship application letter, complete all your application requirements, and submit your

application on time. This advice is not meant to be a rule; you are al-

ways free to apply to more scholarships as you wish if you would think it would increase your chances.

The general advice is to make sure you are applying for scholarships that are matched to you and not

just any scholarship that presents itself.
